1 Main Line Fly Tyers VOLUME 7 ISSUE 7 MARCH 15, 2012 Charlie Craven Fly Fisher/Fly Designer/Author Inside this issue: Charlie Craven International Fly Tying Competition Delaware River Club Raffle Learn To Fly Fish Day Schedule Valley Forge Trout Unlimited Show 2012 PA Trout Openers Opening Day On The Brodhead Fish Commission Biologist to Speak Northwest Territories 2012 Calendar Stocking Schedule Directions and club officers Charlie Craven tied his first fly from a gifted fly tying kit on his eighth birthday. In the days since he has commercially tied flies for most of the shops in the Denver area, as well as many others throughout the Rocky Mountain west. A longtime South Platte River guide, Craven cut his angling teeth on some of the toughest trout in the world. It was these tough fish that prompted him to develop some of his more popular patterns like the Jujubee Midge, Poison Tung and Charlie Boy Hopper. Charlie has now been a commercial fly tyer for over thirty years, and in that time has tied flies for nearly every species of game fish in every location on the planet, though he specializes in trout flies for the Rocky Mountain region. Charlie is a Signature Tyer for Umpqua Feather Merchants and is the originator of other popular patterns such as the Jujubaetis, the Ragin Craven, Two Bit Hooker and the Double Gonga. Craven was the photographer and fly tyer for Barr Flies (Stackpole 2007) and has now authored two books, Charlie Craven s Basic Fly Tying (Headwater Books 2008) and Charlie s Fly Box (Stackpole Books 2010). We usually meet at the creek in the morning at the park just under the RT. 191 bridge between 7 and 7:30AM This is where we will also meet for lunch at 12:30. Anyone that just wants to fish on their own in the morning can do so and then meet up with everyone at lunch time. If you want to fish with other club members and can not find anyone, you can usually find some of us at the RT 191 bridge pool or the next pool down from that on RT 191 at the Pinebrook Park. This is where the water treatment station is located. Also check the Brodhead Creek Park, where the kids fishing pond is. Also located on RT 191. Finally if you can t find anyone at any of the above locations try looking at the Moose Lodge pool - just behind the Moose Lodge on Stokes Mill Ave. Some of us do go up on Fri night for the weekend. We usually stay at Werrys Motel & Cottages on RT 209 in Marshalls Creek Pa Fish Commission Biologist to Speak at the Old Mill March 25 The public is invited to learn about The State of Fisheries in Southeastern Pennsylvania from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission at the Spring Meeting of the Chester Ridley Crum Watersheds Association (CRC) to be held on Sunday, March 25. 6 PAGE 6 The Northwest Territories by Rick Say Wednesday, June 18th This was an easy day canoe wise. We only paddled about six miles instead of yesterday s nineteen. We came to a set of rapids and had to guide the canoes through them. Matt got on the front and I was on the back. We waded into the water and by using the canoe as a crutch guided it through the rapids. The water was waist high in places. The water was cold at first but after a while it was kind of fun. The pool at the bottom of the rapids was loaded with trout. We made camp and went fishing for the rest of the afternoon. I had about four strikes and caught one six pounder which we had for dinner. The big show was put on by my canoe mate. Matt hooked a big one and fought it for about an hour. Every time the fish got close to the boat he would dive straight down then take off on a run. During this time the fish actually towed us into the middle of a large lake. The trout was estimated to be at least 25 to 35 pounds (we did not have a scale). We did have a tape measure. It was 36 inches long. We let him go and paddled back to shore. Later in the evening Matt and I were in our tent. I use the term evening loosely, because this far up north at this time of year it doesn t get dark. It kind of just goes to twilight for a couple of hours. Anyhow Matt and I were having a boisterous game of cards when a strange noise started right behind our tent. It went Mauw mauw.mmaaurum. Matt said it was probably some kind of weird bird. We kept playing and the noise continued. Suddenly we heard You guys better get out of your tent! I poked my head out and saw George standing about thirty yards away. He yelled. Two bear cubs are in a tree just behind your tent. That s when I saw the mother. She was the biggest fattest bear I ever saw. She was just sitting there across from George looking at me. I scrambled for my camera and my shoes and Matt and I bailed out of the tent. By this time everybody in camp was up. We gave the mother bear a wide berth. It took her forever to coax those cubs out of the tree. Meanwhile I m freezing and the mosquitos are feasting. Every time the cubs got close to the ground they ran back up. Alex blamed Matt and me for spooking them. Nobody was in a good mood. Finally the mother coaxed the cubs down. All the bears left and we went to bed. Sometime during the night it started to rain.
