1 GEOFF BRUMLEY MARKETING DIRECTOR Volume 7, Issue 12 December, 2015 Editor: Geoff Brumley Dear Fly Fishing Enthusiasts Page 1 Fishing Updates Page 2 Tip of the Month Page 3 New Arrivals Page 4 December Fly Selection Page 5 December Fly Selection Oh December! My favorite time of year to wield a dry fly. Yes, your toes are cold, your nose is dripping, it s dark and gloomy, and the ice begins to form on the edges of the river. But the great challenges of dry fly exists at this moment and every skill you have ever acquired as a fly fisherman must be moved to the forefront if you are to succeed. You must hunt better to find your targets, be more perfect on your deliveries, and stay more cunning on your approaches. You will be tested!! And when you really think about it isn t that the reason we dry fly fish? It s to accept the most stringent of challenges, defy them, and still hook fish. December is as good as it gets!! Blog Changes On January 1, 2016, the Blog section of our website will be available as a subscription only. There are many reasons why we are making this change; but first and foremost, portions of the Blog will be utilized in our upcoming e-book. It would be difficult to suggest a book purchase when sections of it could be obtained free on our website. We are caught between a rock and a hard place. Why would one of our customers have to pay for the information while others obtain the same information for free? Here s what the new change will look like: For eight years now we have authored a one-of-a-kind dry fly fishing history through our blogs. Hundreds of hours of writing, photo'ing, videoing, and sharing specific insight to help you be a better dry fly person has gone into the process. We hope there is value in what we have done so that you can archive our blogs as a tool for education, insight, and maybe just entertainment. 1) We will still offer a fishing report of the rivers we fish which will appear in a new section of our website. It will only offer the rivers fished, weather conditions, and the fly selections that proved most successful. There will be no photos; just the facts. 2) All in-depth reporting will be entered on the paid site with total access of not only that fishing day but the hundreds of archived fishing experiences for the last eight years. In a calendar year, we offer on average 75 new blog entries for your exploration. 3) Along with the fishing report and the blog, there is a new hatch chart section of our website to assist you with fly selections for specific rivers. We hope you understand the purpose for our changes, and we sincerely hope you will join us as a subscribed member to our Blog. A 2-year membership will be offered at $ Many thanks! Tight lines! Geoff
2 Tip of the Month The one most important body part that must function in the cold of winter is your hands. You still have to tie knots, handle line, release fish, and you still must articulate everything with your hands. My suggestion to keep you functioning is simple spend some money on your hands. I find heavy fingerless gloves made of merino wool or bison wool (if allergic to lanolin) is the best deterrent to cold fingers. They are very warm even when wet and they can keep you functioning in some extremely cold conditions. So when you buy gloves for winter fishing, make sure they have a major component of merino or bison wool.
3 New Arrivals Dry Fly Innovations will be presenting a two-hour presentation entitled Winter Dry Fly Fishing on Saturday, January 9, The presentation is a part of the Western Idaho Fly Fishing Expo (WIFFE) with two time choices: 9:30-11:30 AM or 2:00-4:00 PM. You'll learn critical insight about a fish s feeding habits in winter and show you how to utilize that information to set up and deliver in the hatch. Some of the most exciting dry fly fishing of the year happens after the first hard frost; this presentation will prepare you for that experience with the right gear, knowledge of the hatches, and the perfect selection of winter dry flies. The cost is $45 and includes handouts. You can register on our homepage (or click here). The morning session is filling up, so sign up soon! We hope to see you there!
