Taylor s Hot Spot Dates to Remember November Board Minutes Fly of the Month Tying Demonstrations President s Message As we are slowly working our way through November, up to this week, the weather has been quite good. Relatively moderating temperatures, excellent Blue Winged Olive hatches along with good streamer and nymph fishing has helped make the first half of this month very tolerable in regard to what we all love to do. If you are a Steelheader, last year s terrible run has turned into this year s great opportunity to catch arguably more of one of the most incredible freshwater fish on the planet. One thing is for certain. As I am writing this, the weather has taken a turn for the worse. All we can hope for is a better weather outlook for the second half of November. Hopefully, we can still get some less extreme and tolerable fishing in before things totally freeze up. I am particularly troubled when I walk out of work in Idaho Falls after 6:00PM and have to drive home to Pocatello in the dark with not even a glimmer of any sun or sunset left on the horizon. A sure sign of the cold, dark days of winter approaching whether we like it or not. This brings me to a very important point...many of us will still continue to fight the winter elements, either be it winter fly-rodding, ice fishing, snow machining or just sitting down on various evenings or weekends at the fly tying bench tying and creating/recreating our favorite patterns for the upcoming season. Hopefully, we can still dream about the great hatches of insects and the patterns that we tie to match Mother Nature. Yes, I, too, am saddened about the weather, but we have a special opportunity here! The SEIFF December meeting is the perfect event to get rid of some of that early winter funk and look ahead as opposed to backwards. This brings me to a very important point This upcoming meeting on Thursday December 10 th will be provided by Mr. Buck Goodrich from Shelley, Idaho. Many of us who know Buck know him as an incredibly knowledgeable and giving member of the fly fishing community. Buck will share his wealth of information with us on fishing the cascade corner of Yellowstone National Park. Please check out my program description (also in this newsletter edition) for the full information on the December 10 th program.. All that the Southeast Idaho Fly Fishers offer is open to anyone and free to the public. It is always a pleasure to see both old and new faces alike. Please come join us? The Thursday December 10 th meeting will be held at the Idaho Fish and Game Region 5 Office at 1345 Barton Road in Pocatello. The presentation will begin at 7:00 and be followed by a raffle for some must have items that are needed by all fishermen. I truly hope to see you there!!!! Sincerely, Tom Banyas, President-Southeast Idaho Fly Fishers. Clicking on this icon will connect you to the SEIFF website for more information about this topic.
2 SEIFF Club Chronicle December 2015 Page 2 December Club Program Fishing the Remote Areas of Yellowstone Park Our presenter for the Thursday December 10 th,2015 club meeting will be a longtime friend of many of us in the fly fishing world and a true friend of all that is good with fly fishing. Buck Goodrich (far right) Award Recipient In his program he will divulge his secret fishing spots and how to get to them L. D. Buck Goodrich has been an active member of the Federation of Fly Fishers for over 35 years and has been fly fishing and tying for over 60 years. He has held many offices at the local, regional and national levels. He has received many fly fishing awards including FFF Man of the Year, Western Rocky Mountain Council Tyer of the Year, Dick Nelson Fly Tying Award for teaching, The Lew Jewett Memorial Award, The Lapis Luzuli Award and the East Idaho Heritage Award to name a few. The Western Rocky Mountain Council s Buck Goodrich Lifetime Achievement Award is named for him. Fly fishing for most anything that swims is his passion, but Northern Pike are one of his favorites along with fishing the Cascade Corner of Yellowstone Park. Fly tying specialties include Pike Flies, different techniques for tying nymphs and dry flies and he also enjoys tying Atlantic salmon flies. He is also an FFF certified fly casting instructor and teaches fly casting for fly shops and the local club. Buck has been fishing the Cascade Corner (Southwest corner) of Yellowstone National Park for the last 50 years. He has fished just about every piece of water in that area. He especially enjoys going off trail and exploring little fished streams. In his program he will divulge his secret fishing spots and how to get to them so that we can enjoy this area like he has. At least ninety percent of the people that visit Yellowstone never get off the road. This presentation is an excellent opportunity for us to get to know an area of YNP that is little traveled and has a great deal to offer. Remember, the December 10th, 2015 program will be held at the IDFG Region 5 Offices here in Pocatello. The address is 1345 Barton Road. The meeting will begin at 7:00PM. There is no charge for attendance, and all that are interested are welcome to attend!! And.don t forget about the raffle we have at the conclusion of the program. Bring a few extra bucks and you could win something that you really need. If not, re-gifting can always be an option! I hope to see you all there on Thursday evening December 10 th at 7:00PM at the IDFG Region 5 Offices at 1345 Barton Road here in Pocatello! We are always thankful for you participation and support. Sincerely, Tom Banyas, President and Programs Guy for SEIFF Fishing Report Tom Dial, Newsletter Editor In reviewing the fishing reports from surrounding fly fishing shops the reports and the recommended flies, it appears that the reports are about the same. Some reports may have their favorite midge, streamer or nymph patterns which may vary slightly from standard fare, but substantially the patterns are very similar. There will be days when the dry fly fishing is giving you fits, days when streamers work, and days when nymphs are best. For some of my suggestions and patterns for fall and winter fishing, see Casting About in this Newsletter.
3 SEIFF Club Chronicle December 2015 Page 3 Casting About Tom Dial, Newsletter Editor Well the holidays are really here. So are the long nights and we are left with the memories of good days on the rivers, lakes and streams that are in our minds during this long time of the year, with anticipation of things to come next year, new flies to try, new places to fish and places to fish we have been before. It is also time to think about winter fishing. Most of the fishing reports are the same and many of the flies used are the same, with some minor differences. So, I am going to sum up with some of my thoughts for those who wish to venture out and some summaries of what I found in looking at old fishing reports, and the latest ones. Flies: MIDGES: You will need plenty of these. Trailing shuck midges, bead head Zebra Midges (red & black are my favorites, but have some green and brown as well). NYMPHS: Hares ear, Girdle Bugs, Copper Johns, Prince Nymphs (the power Prince is my favorite), Shop Vacs. BAETIS: gets a category all by itself, because if you want to fish on top, then this is your fly. Size Fall Baetis or BWO patterns (the Harrop series is excellent), Griffith s Gnats, and for just subsurface.. for soft hackles: Syl s Midge, Snipe and Purple, and the little Olive Flymph. STREAMERS: Look no further than Vic Loiselle s Orange Rubber Bugger (our fly of the month), Vic s Minnow (you will have to wait until next month for this one which is our fly of the month next issue), Sculpin Patterns, Wooly Buggers for these last 2 green is a great color. Gear: Leaders for Streamers, 2X to 3X; leaders for midges and dry flies 4X-5.5X. Be sure to have some strike indicators; extra clothing for the occasional header or the Henry s Fork Dive, fingerless gloves, hemostats. Some of the above flies have been featured in our fly of the month, i.e. Syl s Midge, Zebra Midges, etc. Copies of the newsletter can be found at the SEIFF website. There are two nice articles in this month s (winter 16) THE FLYFISING AND TYING JOURNAL, Soft-Hackling the Emerging Midge, p. 8 & A Small Box of Downsize Flies, p 12. Both of the foregoing are authored by Dave Hughes who also wrote Wet Flies. In his Wet Flies book, you can see that he was greatly influenced by Polly Rosborough s book Tying and Fishing the Fuzzy Numphs; and especially Pete Hidy and James Leisenring s book The Art of Tying the Wet Fly and Fishing the Flymph. For those of you who can find a copy of Hidy and Leisenring s book, it is a wonderful little book. It should be part of your fly fishing library, as should Wet Flies. I would not recommend buying Hughe s Wet Flies right now, because he has just published a revision, which is now available. So, if you are looking for it don t get confused with the earlier publication. Casting About (Continued) He has great ideas for fishing, tying and using soft hackles and flymphs. It would be a great Xmas gift for yourself or a friend. Gook luck with finding Hidy and Leisenring s book, but you might get lucky on Amazon or Ebay..if you can find it, just buy it. Both are great winter reading, particularly with some good coffee or single malt (if that is your thing just a thought). In the meantime, have the best of Thanksgivings, take a few moments to remember those who left us this past year: Dave Johnson, Al Tetz and give thanks for the many they helped and their humor and friendship. Donate a bird to the food bank to help the less fortunate. Give thanks for those you love and those who love you and I hope that you are surrounded by them on Thanksgiving Day and during the holiday season. Keep the wind at your back. What Is SEIFF? Jennifer Jackson, Newsletter Contributor Since 1972, SEIFF has been an asset to many community outreach events and fishing preservation projects. Club members have contributed many volunteer man hours to the East Idaho Fly Tying Expo in Idaho Falls, Sportsmen Against Hunger food fund raiser for the Idaho Food Bank, fly tying demonstrations at the Idaho State University Museum of Natural History, Trout in the Classroom training and funding for southeast Idaho school teachers, offering fly casting lessons at community events, and helping with Idaho Fish and Game Free Fishing Day celebrations and fishing trailer events. SEIFF has been a long standing partner with the Idaho Fish and Game and Trout Unlimited on riparian and restoration projects through planting willows and doing repair work on Slate and Giraffe Creeks and Thomas Fork. They have raised money to help purchase land for anglers on the Portneuf River and continue to build cross buck fences for riparian protection, extending over 5 miles on both sides of the Portneuf. ***************************** Jennifer Jackson is the Regional Conservation Educator for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, southeast region.
4 SEIFF Club Chronicle December 2015 Page 4 Taylor s Hot Spot - Below American Falls Dam John Taylor, Newsletter Contributor This month s hot spot-----with the still waters freezing over, fishing below American Falls dam is a great alternative. Much of the water is a lot like a lake with a slight current! You can walk up to the edges of the drop offs and reach a lot of trout. This is great nymphing water as well as wooly bugger/streamer water! One can find riffles and some nice runs. b.h. nymphs in sizes 10-18, streamers in sizes 2 10, buggers in same sizes, as to colors you are limited to your imagination. Dark colors on dark days, light colors on light days or vice versa! There are a bunch of places to gain access. at boat ramp right below dam, down at the hatchery either by the feeding station, at head of nature trail or down at the fenced parking area, pipeline area, Mary s mine (beware of slick conditions), eagle rock access to name few!! Wear warm clothes, use a wading staff, and be careful and observant. Good luck and good fishing!!!!!!!! Dates to Remember -Upcoming Events :00 PM, General Membership Meeting, Idaho Fish & Game Office, Barton Road, Buck Goodrich will be presenting. Details are in this Newsletter. This should be a great Xmas show for all of us. Buck is a well know tier and presenter. 5 SEIFF Club Chronicle December 2015 Page 5 SEIFF Fly of the Month Rubber Bugger It s streamer time no one does them better than our own Vic Loiselle. An excellent fly fisherman and tier. He has tied many of these flies lately for sale and there seems to be a big demand for them. Vic is a SEIFF member and is a chapter director. A great club asset This winter, I would like to feature local tiers and some of their winter flies. If you would like to have a fly featured in an upcoming addition, please send a photo of the fly, recipe and instructions for tying. If you want to add some instructions on how to fish it, pleas do. We have some of the best tiers in South East Idaho right her in our club. I would like to have our membership get acquainted with some of them. No better place to start than with Vic. Fly Tying Demonstrations These free demos are at Jimmy s All Season Anglers in Idaho Falls. They are worth your time. Note that the 2 of the tiers are from Pocatello: Chuck Collins, Terry McHargue. If you have time, drive to Idaho Falls and support these two fine tiers. Chuck Collins has won several national awards for his patterns and flies. He is a strong supporter of our own SEIFF chapter and the annual Fly Tying Expo in Idaho Falls sponsored by the South East Idaho Cutthroats. 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM Saturdays from November 21 st, 2015 through March, 2016 Attending these is a great way to learn tying techniques, new and old, and to stay current on materials and tools. Each tier we feature has much experience in tying and using the flies they demonstrate, and each is ready to share their knowledge and skills with you. Here is our demo schedule from Saturday, November 21 st to Saturday, December 26 th, Material: HOOK: Dia-Riki #730 Size 4 THREAD: Orange Uni-thread 6/0 BEAD: Gold or Tungsten TAIL: 1 brown marabou topped with 1 orange marabou FLASH: Fine pearl flash 2 strips on each side RIB: Rubber bugger strips BODY: Orange estaz TYING INSTRUCTIONS: Put cone head on hook and build layer of thread on hook. TAIL: Tie 1 brown marabou topped with 1 orange marabou. FLASH: Fold a strip of flash over the thread and tie in on one side of fly's tail and repeat this for the other side. BODY/RIB: Tie in rubber strip by tip of wire at top of hook by the base of the tail with the long end facing back. Tie in by the tip orange estaz and advance thread to just behind the cone. Wrap the forward to the cone and secur with a few wraps. At this point wrap thread until cone head is securely tied in. Wrap the rubber bugger strip forward with 4 or 5 wraps and secure in place with finish thread wraps. Add glue to head. NOTE: Have fun fishing, this is a great streamer fly all year around. I've tied this fly in a number of color varieties. The materials are available at Portneuf River Outfitters and several versions of this fly are available for purchase there.
