I believe and hope that with the excellent salad, pizza and socializing, good time was had by all. Please remember that anyone interested in SEIFF is not only encouraged, but welcome to attend all meetings and functions. And those of you who placed your raffle tickets in the hat for the Rio Perception fly line (a $90.00 value) and the Rio Gold (a $74.95 value) fly line, you have to be present to win. To make things even sweeter, the club will also raffle some Rio Powerflex tippet materials at the October 8 th meeting. Wow, a free fly line if you win, just for coming to the meeting. The meeting is Thursday October 8 th at 7:00PM at the IDFG building on Barton Road in the downstairs meeting room. October has traditionally been the month to renew club memberships and interest non-members/newcomers to become part of the Southeast Idaho Fly Fishers. SEIFF is a Trout Unlimited member in good standing and works hand in hand with many local, state and federal conservation organizations to repair, maintain and enhance all aspects of where trout live. Trout Unlimited deals worldwide with these issues and has an extremely positive reputation in doing so. As your current president and longtime member of SEIFF, I ask you to consider membership in the SEIFF. All you have to do to become a member is join TU, $35 and you automatically become a member of the club, plus you also are a TU member, which allows to know what is going on in the rest of the country with all that concerns cold-water fisheries. You truly become a member of a large body of like-minded folks interested in preserving and upgrading clean water and the entire beautiful habitat that is so dear to our fly-fishing hearts. In addition, if you want to donate to the club there are several donation levels, and the perks associated with each are listed below: 1. Bronze Level: $15.00 Club newsletter sent to you. 2. Silver Level : $25.00 Club newsletter, patch, pin or decal 3. Gold Level : $35.00 Club newsletter, patch, hat, pin or decal 4. Platinum level: $50.00 Club newsletter, hat, patch, pin or decal All you have to do to become a member is join TU Being a member can mean anything from getting down and dirty helping with the many hands on projects in the field or learning about and enjoying many of the fine programs the club offers throughout the year from October thru April. We would be happy to have you in any capacity! Consider joining a group of like-minded anglers that have a penchant for all that is good with and for trout and their habitat. And remember, virtually all monies, whether thru memberships or donations are utilized for programs and projects within our general membership area. Eighty-eight cents of every dollar donated to Trout Unlimited is used for conservation and education efforts. Much of your TU dues are given back to the local chapter for use as the organization sees worthy. Very Sincerely, Tom Banyas, President, SEIFF Clicking on this icon will connect you to the SEIFF website for more information about this topic.

SEIFF Club Chronicle October 2015 Page 2 August Board Meeting Minutes Members present: Tom Banyas and Roger Thompson The board meeting minutes from the April board meeting were read and accepted as read. Clyde Lowther, via texting, stated that SEIFF currently had $20, in the account Casting For Warriors- Due to complications with timing and scheduling, the Casting For Warriors program has been canceled for this year. All donations and resources will be utilized for next year. The September 10 th Meet and Greet will be held at PV s Uncorked restaurant on North Main Street in Old Town Pocatello from 6:30-8:30 PM. Two Rio fly lines will be raffled at the Meet and Greet. The drawing for the fly lines will be at the October 8 th meeting. Winners need to be present at the drawing in order to win the prizes. Watershed Guardians (Mike Settell) has asked for a donation of $ to purchase a Fish Cat 4 personal watercraft for the Beaver pond derby to be held in October. This will be placed on the September agenda for discussion and a decision. The Gibson Jack project is moving forward, with no new information at this time. IDFG has graciously consented to allowing SEIFF to hold club meetings at the IDFG office in the downstairs meeting room on Barton Road. Discussion will be had at the October board meeting. Other- none A motion was made by Roger Thompson to adjourn the meeting at 8:05 PM and was seconded by Tom Banyas September Board Meeting Minutes Attendance: Tom Banyas, Roger Thompson, Tom Dial, Pete Griffin, Clyde Lowther, Bud Smalley, and Anne LoPiccalo. Absent: Darrell Brown, Bob Huerta, Denny Jones, John Taylor, Vic Loiselle, Jennifer Jackson Minutes: The minutes from the August meeting were read. Roger made a motion to accept the minutes as read, and Clyde seconded. The motion passed. September Minutes (Continued) Financial Report: Clyde Lowther reported that the current balance in the SEIFF account is $20,441. Tom put the costs of the meet and greet at PV on his credit card and he will turn in the receipts for that. Meeting Location: Tom mentioned that he was thrilled that the IDFG offered the room for our meetings. He also thought that if someone bought the fly shop, that the new owner would want to hold the meetings at PRO. Programs for the year: Tom said that he doesn t have anyone locked it for programs. Tom said he doesn t have the time to do a program but he will contact John or Parker Stenerson or Boots Allen. Roger suggested Mike Settell. Clyde mentioned Ed Galindo. Tom D mentioned Todd Lanning, from Henrys Fork Anglers. Tom B said he will make the contacts, but he is struggling with October. Review of the Meet & Greet: Tom said that he was thrilled with the attendance at the meet and greet. All agreed. Several expressed a desire to meet in the room in the back, instead of at the very front of the restaurant, where it was a bit more crowded, but all in all, it was great. Possible donation for Watershed Guardians: A number of items were discussed. Tom will contact Mike regarding what to donate. Bud made a motion to spend $200. Roger seconded. During discussion, Tom revised the motion to say that we would donate up to $300 for a donation. Roger seconded. The motion carried. Conservation Projects update from Bud Smalley: Bud Smalley told the board that it was time to do some fundraising as the previous monies have been spent. On Pebble Creek, he got a bid for the irrigation project. It came to $250,000. Bud said he is trying to raise $28,000. He asked the club for a donation of $5,000. He said that the 5 ranchers are working with him because the project would allow them to obtain their irrigation water, which they lost due to a flood a number of years ago. Ranchers have agreed to pull less water once the project is complete. The Gibson Jack Creek project runs down through Juniper hills Country Club. The project would restore the stream to help the fish get from the Portneuf back up to Gibson Jack. The IDFG is behind the project, but the project is moving slowly. Tom Dial made a motion to donate $5,000 for the Pebble project pending the project obtaining funds to complete the project. Roger seconded. The motion passed. Other: Tom B. announced that he cannot attend the State Meeting in October in Coeur d Alene. He will send an out to the board to see if any of them could attend and if needed, he will write an article for the newsletter to see if a member would like to attend. The club pays for expenses. The meeting adjourned at 7:46 pm

SEIFF Club Chronicle October 2015 Page 3 SEIFF Fly of the Month The 6X Emerger This fly was developed by Clayton Molinero who loved to fish the Smith, and rivers around West Yellowstone, Montana. He worked for Blue Ribbon Flies for several years before leaving for Austin Texas. It initially appeared in the Blue Ribbon Flies annual fly patterns in 1995, then was rejuvenated again in their 2009 fly fishing patterns of the year. Clayton loved the Firehole and the baetis hatches there. Although it was designed for selective trout on the Firehole it is a very good fall baetis pattern, anywhere. It works well during both pre- and post-emergence. It represents an ascending nymph with an exposed wing or a cripple struggling in its nymphal case. I have done well with this pattern as a searching pattern tagged onto a partridge and pheasant tail. Casting About Tom Dial, Newsletter Editor Well summer is history, the State Fair has passed, autumn colors are starting, the streams and rivers are low and clear, the hatches are dwindling, the fish are wary and shy, but will still rise to the fly. It s that time of the year. Note that our membership meetings will still be on the second Thursday of the month, but we have changed the venue to the Idaho Fish and Game Building on Barton Road for the time being. As most of you know Roger is in the process of selling Portneuf River Outfitters, pending the sale the Board felt we should look for another place to hold the meetings, until the PRO is sold, then we hope the new owner(s) will let us continue to hold our meetings there. The Wellness Center Pond is a huge success. It was packed on the day the Center opened and has a lot of fisherman there every time I exercise on the walking track at the Center. I was there at 8:00 working out in the rain, 9.17, and there were over 20 folks there shivering around the pond and on the docks with poles set. The place is being heavily used and a wonderful addition to this community. If you have-not visited it, then you should. Material: Hook: Tiemco 100 #18 Thread: Camel 8/0 Body: Golden Pheasant Tail Fibers Rib: Fine Copper Wire Wing Case: Medium Dun Zelon Head: Peacock Herl Step 1: Attach tying thread and fine copper wire to rear of hook Step 2: Tie on 2-3 pheasant tail fibers and wrap 2/3 down the shank. Counter wrap the fine copper wire over the pheasant and tie off. Step 3: Tie on a short wing case of zelon facing back over the body. Step 4: Wrap a small head of peacock herl, one or two strands. Whip finish. In the past 2 weeks I fished the Big Wood in Sun Valley and the Firehole in Yellowstone National Park. It was fall fishing at its best. Lots of fall eye candy, and cottonwood leaves starting to fall on the Wood. Bob Huerta, Wally Stephens, Gail and I spent a wonderful day there over Labor Day. Everyone but me caught fish, but I was the only one that refused to use corn and salmon eggs. I had a great afternoon in that wonderful place with good friends, good weather and good food. Gail and I closed our property down in Island Park last weekend, but found time to fish the Firehole. We had the river to ourselves, surrounded by Bison, White Sedge Moths, Osprey and Elk with the geyser water dribbling into the river. We swung soft hackled Hares Ear & Partridge and Orange & Partridge thru the riffles. We had fish on pretty steady until 5 PM. Both great fishing experiences, but with the autumn leaves and the coolness in the breeze it s a forecast that soon I will be sitting at my tying vice watching the snow drift and pile up outside the window and listen to the wind blow. Although my body is in front of the vice and the taste of single malt is tickling my taste buds, my mind will be back on the Firehole, The Wood, Silver Creek, the Madison, the Portneuf and my favorite streams. We are truly fortunate to have such an abundance of fly fishing streams so close. I hope your memories of the rivers have been as sweet as mine and you enjoy some days of autumn color and rising fish before the snow falls. (Continue on Page 5)

SEIFF Club Chronicle October 2015 Page 4 Fishing Rules for the Wellness Fishing Pond Jennifer Jackson, Newsletter Contributor September 12 th marked the much-anticipated grand opening of the Portneuf Wellness Complex located near the former North Bannock County Fairgrounds (or Bannock County Event Center) in Pocatello. This amazing 80-acre facility was generously gifted by the Portneuf Health Trust to the people of Bannock County and all those visiting the area to promote the physical and mental well-being of the community. It is hard not to feel better after spending any time there whether it is walking or biking the perimeter trail system, diving for the volleyball on one of four sand courts, playing a pick-up game of basketball, or chasing kids at the playground. This doesn t even include the organized sports that can be played at the complex-- including soccer, football, and lacrosse. Nor does it include the mountain bike park to be constructed in the natural drainage near the stream. Spend some time taking in a gorgeous sunset or view of the mountain surround, or lay on the grass with your family in front of the spectacular amphitheater as one of your favorite bands plays, and you can t help but get a boost to your mental well-being. Of course, one of my favorite amenities at the Wellness Complex is the beautiful 6-acre lake designed for swimmers, beach bums, and anglers. And, it is probably the lake that has generated the most questions from recreationists. So, with that in mind, here are some answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the lake and its multi-use purpose. Q. Are there fish in the lake? A. Yes. This lake is stocked by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game with kokanee (landlocked salmon) and rainbow trout. A donation of over 80 large rainbow trout from Clear Springs Foods has made fishing at the lake particularly exciting. Some of the fish pulled out have weighed nearly 8 pounds. The lake will be stocked several more times this fall. Q. Do I need a fishing license to fish? A. Yes. Those 14 years and older must possess a valid Idaho fishing license when fishing the pond at the Wellness Complex. This is no different than for any other public fishery in the state. Fishing Pond (Continued) Q. What are the rules for keeping fish? A. Because the lake was created after our last rules process was completed, general rules apply. Each angler may keep up to 6 trout and 6 kokanee. However, because of the popularity of the pond, we are recommending that anglers keep only two fish. Please note the two-fish limit may be adopted by the Fish and Game Commission when they consider new proposals this fall. Q. Any restrictions on access to the lake by anglers? A. Anglers may fish from docks, from a float tube or other non-motorized vessel, or from the shore. However, no fishing is allowed in the swimming area which is separated from the rest of the lake by a rope. Q. How deep is the lake? A. 35 feet deep in the fishing zone and shallower on the swimming beach. Q. Can I fish at night? A. The Bannock County Commissioners have set hours for the Wellness Complex between 5:00 am and 1 hour after sunset, and later on those nights with special events like a concert. You can only fish when the complex is open. There are several other details in the ordinance that should be observed including, but not limited to, no motors on watercraft and no drones. Q. Can I allow my dog to swim in the lake? A. No. And, if your dog is joining you along the shore or on one of the docks, it must be leashed. Q. Can I fish from my watercraft (canoes, float tubes, kayaks, pontoon boats) on the lake? A. Yes. Q. Will the Take Me Fishing Trailer be making routine stops at the lake? A. Yes. The Take Me Fishing Trailer will add the Wellness Complex to its planned stops on its 2016 summer schedule. Those who register at the trailer may use the equipment for free and do not need a license to fish while the trailer is present at the site. The 2016 summer schedule will be posted on Fish and Game s website in May (Continued On Page 5)

SEIFF Club Chronicle October 2015 Page 5 Fishing Pond (Continued) Q. Can I ice fish this winter? A. Yes, if conditions allow. There are certainly many other questions that users of the new Wellness Complex may have, especially about the lake. For fishing related questions, please contact David Teuscher at the southeast regional office of Fish and Game at (208) Questions related to other aspects of the facility, such as concert schedules and reserving the complex for an activity should be directed to and Jennifer Jackson is the Regional Conservation Educator for the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, southeast region. Casting About (Continued) Tom Dial, Newsletter Editor It will be sad to see Portneuf River Outfitters change hands. Roger, his wife Donna, and employees (many of them SEIFF members) have been taking care of our fly fishing needs for several years. They supported many, if not all, of the SEIFF functions since the store opened. Roger is also a valued SEIFF Board Member and recipient of SEIFF s Achievement Award. SEIFF has held their Board meetings, membership meetings and programs at the shop for a long time. PRO will not really be the same without him, Donna and the others. So, if you get a chance and if you don t get the chance, take the time to drop by and tell him thanx. for all that he has done for the sport and SEIFF. What gives our sport unforgettable memories are the characters and personalities that participate in it. Some of our best memories are the folks (characters) that have frequented the open fly tying at the shop. Some of them are gone (Dave Johnson, Al Tetz) but they will be remembered from the times we met them at PRO, smiles on their faces, tying flies and telling tales. Roger, you will leave an imprint here on all of us. Thanks! Hope to see you at the meetings. Tom Banyas laid out his plans for the programs this coming year and they are truly exciting with great presenters. I hope to see each of you there, bring a friend. 6 SEIFF Club Chronicle October 2015 Page 6 Fishing Reports Courtesy of: All Seasons Angler Silver Creek, Big Wood, Big Lost: Picabo Angler: Silver Creek Outfitters Big Wood: On the Big Wood the Western Red Quill is out and about, driving the fish crazy! Couple this with the enormity of Fall Baetis ande both of these insects during bankers hours and with quite a bit of overlap as well. Trico on warm mornings is still a possibility and Hoppers are going to continue to take fish until they are long gone. You can use Green Drake patterns for the Red Quill. Upper Lost: Ants & Hoppers..fishing well, but the water is low. So be prepared to cover a lot of ground, because the fish are holding in deep water and under the foam lines with Red Quills. Best time to fish is between 1-3 PM. Lower Lost: tough wading, with various levels of water flows. It is worth fishing if the flows are reasonable, below d350 CFS. Copper Johns and San Juan worms, Zebra midges, red colored nymphs. Crane flies skated on the surface provides a great deal of fun. Nymphing will remain productive with beaded Pheasant Tail nymphs, Zebra midge, Rainbow Warriors, or Bishop s Dynamites fished either Euro style or dry dropper. Silver Creek: Silver Creek Outfitters The Creek is transitioning as the afternoon Callibaetis hatch begins to wane; however, there are still a few Callibaetis on warmer days along with your hoppers, beetles, and ant patterns. But the times they are a changin with this onslaught of cooler weather. The Mahogany Duns soon will be coming off along with Fall Baetis. At the moment, the best fishing is still in the S- curves into the Pond. Keep in mind, the water has really cooled down; if you plan of tubing, take a lot of layers from head to toe. The walk and wade is also starting to pick as the browns begin their pre-spawn behavior. Late September into October can be the best time to pick up an aggressive brown on a streamer pattern. Yellowstone Park: Madison River Outfitter The Madison: Swinging soft hackles and smaller leech patterns has been the most consistent, that and low, overcast weather doesn't hurt either. As with virtually all of our fishing around here, take your time and a walk away from the main access points, there are fish spread all throughout the Madison. Best soft hackles to have are the #8 Peacock, #10 Pheasant Tail, #10 March Brown Spider, and the classic #12 Green and Partridge. With dark weather in the forecast olive, black, brown, and natural colored streamers, Cheech's Leech and Sculpin Leech. The Firehole: The Firehole is falling into autumn shape; cooling water, increased hatches, and soft hackles: #12 Orange or Green Soft Hackles Though you can find plenty of fish eating #16 Sprouts, #16 BWO Parachute, and #18 Purple Parachute, swinging soft hackles will be more consistent. Whereever you see a deeper slot, bank, or fish rising into the film, keep your line tight and swing flies through these areas. The Madison Outside the Park: Blue Ribbon Flies The Madison below Quake is transitioning into a period when nymphs and streamer fishes well everyday. Insect activity will be limited to hoppers, beetles and ants. If you get a nasty day you'll see Baetis. The brown trout will be getting feisty and they'll fall for streamers easily on overcast days. Be prepared to fish every style that you enjoy when you head to the river. Swinging soft hackles can be a lot of fun on the Madison, not many people do it. The fishing will get better as the weather cools off. The action on Hebgen Lake is winding down. Weak hatches and a few risers are still being seen everyday but it's nothing like typical August fishing. If you're lake obsessed it wouldn't be a terrible option but if you're out in Yellowstone for a weeklong trip you should probably fish elsewhere. Nymphing and stripping leeches will soon be the most productive tactics on the lake. (Continued on Page 7)

SEIFF Club Chronicle October 2015 Page 7 Fishing Reports (Cont.) THE HENRY S FORK: Henry s Fork Anglers: The Box: The Box is still a little tough but think streamers! An early morning run through the box throwing Sculpin patterns is a great idea. Everybody s got their favorites but you Mike Lawson s Olive Wool Head Sculpin is recommended and Copper and Crystal Zonkers and the Articulated Bling. As the day warms up you re going to have to throw some nymphs. Coffee and Brown #10 Rubber Legs and a #18 red Zebra Midge has worked well. Flows are around 1000cfs out of Island Park Dam so plenty of water. Try fishing a couple of Rubber Legs with some split shot and no bobbers. Concentrate in the deeper runs and troughs. The Ranch: The Ranch has picked up. Tricos in the morning have been good, together with Mahogany Duns. We had many more great eats that day and got a few to the net so in my mind it was a great day. Still lots of caddis throughout the day and picky fish will eat a #18 Sheralee s Speckled Sedge. Also Hoppers and Beetles have been working very well midday. Don t be afraid to un-match the hatch. Renegades and Royal Wulffs are great old School Ranch patterns. The Lower River: Warm River to Ashton continues to fish well with lots of small to medium fish with an occasional big Brown trout. Small bead heads like Zebra Midges and Two Bit Hookers will serve you well! Don t forget streamers! From Ashton down things are looking up as well! Tricos are still plentiful and the caddis have remained consistent. A #20 Double Wing Trico has been getting them in the Fun Farm. In this stretch land these fish as quickly as possible. Try to keep them in the water and spend time making sure they are fully revived before moving on. THE SOUTH FORK: Jimmy All Season s Anglers River flow has been stable for several days: just a tad below 9000 cfs out of Palisades Dam and just under 9900 cfs at Heise. You could not ask for better weather for good BWO and Mahogany dun emergences than what we have today and coming up for the next few days. The prevailing low light conditions also mean better conditions for trying streamer patterns. Now is a great time to try the South Fork. October General Program Fishing the Fremont River The October 8 program will be about fishing the Fremont River. It will be at the Fish and Game office on Barton Road. This is a change from the past, so spread the word. Harley Reno, PHD, will be the presenter. Harley is a frequent presenter at the Fly Tying Expo and at local clubs and fly-fishing events. He is an author, speaker, guide and a retired professor. He is a good speaker and presenter. It will be fun evening. Plan to attend and bring a friend. Read about Harley s fascinating bio by clicking on the icon link below taking you to the club s website.
