Members at Large: Marvin Allison, David Cook, Merrill Miller, Roger Theroux. Put the date on your calendar and plan to attend the dinner. David will be conducting our annual Lunker Dinner raffle. He has procured some nice items for the raffle. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5. If you contribute to the dinner, you will receive a free raffle ticket. This year, we will be doing a fly swap. Tie a dozen of your favorite dry fly or an emerger. Contact David Cook at (816) to sign up. You must be signed up to participate. If you have any fishing/tying equipment you would like to donate please contact David Cook, our raffle coordinator. Brisket and Pork will be provided by the club. We need side dishes and desserts to go along with the meat. If your last name starts with an A through N bring a side dish (ex: Potato salad, Bake Beans, or Cole Slaw) and O through Z bring a dessert. Bring a guest and join in on the fun! MTFA Fly Tying - each Monday Nights for the next 5 weeks The Kansas City Chapter of MTFA is sponsoring our Winter fly tying classes starting on February 2nd with Merril Miller lead instructor. We have a new fly tying manual with expanded step by step instructions. The cost is $8.00 per class, we furnish all the materials needed for each tying session. If you have not signed up and are interested in attending please contact Merril Miller at to let him know how many additional tiers to set up for.

I would like to thank all those who helped work our booth at the Sports Show. The photo shows Bob, Merrill and Daniel demonstrating the art of tying flies for both warm and cold water fishing. A number of people seemed interested in the sport of fly fishing and some had never heard of Missouri Trout Fishermen s Association. The Sports Show gives us a chance to really promote the club to a large number of people in a short amount of time. If you were not able to help this year please plan on being there next year. Dinner, fly swap and raffle are on the scheduled for the evening. I understand they will stock Trout at James A Reed in February and March. Lilley s Landing Fishing Report for upper Lake Taneycomo finds them catching trout on Zebra Midges under a float 12- to 18-inches deep, also using scuds, egg flies and San Juan patterns. 3 Trout Dying for a Photo Opt. Page 3 In the past couple of months I have read a few articles on fish dying do to us anglers wanting a picture to share. Just look at the number of pictures on Facebook with people holding their catch and even though they may release the fish and it swims off the chances of it surviving really depends on a number of things. I believe that most fly anglers today would agree that catch and release is very important to our sport and it helps promote better fisheries. Releasing a fish back into the stream or river to fight another day is an awesome feeling and really adds to the experience. Trout Unlimited released a report on handling stress of fish from catch and release fishing. Here is some of their findings from their report: Seconds. Accor ding to the r epor t, a fish should never be out of the water longer than seconds. After this length of time, the survival rate of released fish drops fast. In fact, one study found that rainbow trout had an 88% survival rate when exercised to simulate being caught. However, once exposed to air for 30 seconds, the survival rate dropped to only 62%! So, once you ve landed your fish and removed the fly (in the water of course), make sure everything is ready to go before hoisting him out of the water for a photo. Aim for one big lift for that hero shot (closer to the water is better), before putting him right back in the water. Long Fights Mean High Stress. The amount of time the fish is played is one of the largest contributing factors of stress on a fish. According to the report, some studies have shown that up to 89% of fish played to exhaustion die after being released. You don t have to be a statistician to know that s not good. Use as heavy gear you can get away with (within reason of course), and put the steam on! You may be surprised you ll land more fish by doing so! Learn to Remove Hooks. The report also mentioned that some studies found that more fish were harmed by novice anglers, due to a longer time required to remove hooks. This shouldn t be discouraging to any novice anglers out there. Practice makes perfect! However, if you think you might be in this category, try this exercise. Take an orange (or similar fruit) and stick the hook point of a fly into the peel. Grab the hook with your forceps, and rotate your wrist in the opposite direction of the hook bend. Practice until you are comfortable removing hooks quickly and safely. In summary of the report, the good folks of TU offered some common sense guidelines that every angler should abide by in order to minimize stress to the fish. Be a responsible angler and follow suit! Minimize angling duration (the time a fish is played and handled for hook removal). Minimize air exposure by removing hooks with the fish in water and photographing fish quickly. Use barbless hooks and artificial lures/flies. Use rubber nets void of knots that protect fish scales and mucous. Avoid angling during extremes in water temperature. In my opinion some of the best pictures you can take of your catch is with the fish half in/out of the water. See some of the examples on the next page. Continued on Page 4

5 Page 5 Fly of the Month Olive PSS (Pine Squirrel Streamer) by Steve Crosby Materials: Hook: 3XL - 4XL streamer hook Thread: Olive or Brown Bead: Gold bead sized to hook (brass or tungsten) Body: Gold tinsel Wing: Pine-squirrel strip, dyed olive Rib: Medium gold wire Hackle: Hen hackle 1. Crimp Barb, slide bead on hook and clamp the hook in the vise, 2. Strip the fluff from the base of the hackle and tie in behind the bead, 3. Tie in gold wire, wrap back to rear of hook, and tie in gold tinsel, 4. Wrap thread back to front of hook, wrap tinsel in slightly overlapping turns to the front of hook and tie off, cutting excess tinsel, 5. Strip the fur from the front 1/8th inch of a pine-squirrel zonker strip and tie in behind bead, 6. Bind the zonker strip to the hook with the gold wire, Matuka style, 7. Tie off wire rib, clip excess and wrap hackle. 8. Finished Fly. This fly is effective for warm-water species as well as for trout.
