In lieu of our normal monthly meeting we are having a Holiday party. Our conservation efforts continue and we are continuing to expand opportunities for our membership. The December meeting will be a holiday potluck at Scott and Terry Kotavy s house at 5:00 pm on December 9th. This is also the annual business meeting. Details are below. Our conservation efforts as described below are focused on collecting and processing stream data. Our Outings Coordinator, Dennis Jennings is planning trips for the upcoming year and Joe Fagan continues to carry the load for the monthly Lie N Tie and, we are bringing back our biannual banquet. Have a safe holiday season and I hope to see you at the party on the 9th.

Tight Lines, Robin Holiday Party This year s OPTU Christmas Potluck Party will be held on Saturday December 9th, 2017 at the home of Scott and Terry Koktavy. The fun begins at 5:00 pm and lasts until?? There is plenty of parking. The hosts will be providing the main course of ham and mashed potatoes, we will also have soft drinks, wine and beer. Bi Annual Banquet Mark your calendars, the next OPTU Bi"Annual Banquet will be held on March 17th, 2018 at the newly renovated Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch, located at 5501 Hacienda Del Sol Road, Tucson, AZ The phone number is (520) Social Hour begins at 6:00 with dinner and lots of fun following. The cost for this event is $65 per person for the first 100 guests, and $80 thereafter. More information on ticket sales, etc. will be announced in future newsletters. Conservation At this point our conservation efforts are focused on the West Fork Black River. Nothing can be done with the streams on Mt Graham at this time. In conjunction with the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest we have a dozen temperature data loggers on the West Fork Black River (WFBR) and its

4 tributaries. We are discussing the possibility of adding an additional dozen in the spring. We have also provided the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest with dissolved oxygen and conductivity monitors. We downloaded the June to October data from these monitors in October. In the future we plan to download the data once or twice a year at low water times such as June and October. This data along with remotely sensed imagery is being used to build a detailed map of stream habitat. We hope to use this to build classification models for more efficiently analyzing stream conditions over large areas with less labor. They have hatched and after some adjustments to the holding net, they continue to grow. Volunteers are needed.

7 Next Speakers There is no Speaker for the December Holiday Party Women's Activities Women s Initiative (WI) is in need of a leader to provide support to OPTU women and to interact with the National TU Women's Initiative. Communication Team is in need of a person to add weekly bits of info to update the OPTU web page. Both roles require little commitment. Each should take about 3-4 hours a month, max. Please contact Roseann Marsett if you're interested in helping. rzann@comcast.net. Lie and Tie A monthly gathering to socialize while tying flies.

8 Lie n Tie December 19, 207 The December Lie n Tie session will be held at The Randolph Recreation Center, 200 S. Alvernon Way. Lie n Tie sessions are held on the third Tuesday of the month, this time on Tuesday, December 19 th. We set up at 5:00 PM, begin tying at 5:30 sharp, and end tying about 7:30 PM so as to be gone from the recreation center before 8:00 PM. At this posting no particular flies are planned. But Joe Fagan wishes to tie some dry flies, perhaps some extended body damsel flies and/or mayflies for the warmer months which haven t really gone away this year, yet. Those tying should have their own fly-tying tools. Materials will be provided. Tiers should try to bring portable lighting. The fluorescent lighting in the room we will use is not quite bright enough for tying small flies.

9 Casting Practice OPTU Teams with Dry Creek Outfitters to host a casting practice every Saturday at 8:00 am, at Ft Lowell Park. Everyone is welcome regardless of skill level. Most days there is extra equipment and experienced casters to help out beginners. Project Healing Waters

10 Fishing Report Report: Retirees Trip to Becker Lake November 6 9, 2017 The fishing trip was fun for everyone that went to fish together at Becker Lake. However the catching wasn t as good as we expected at Becker Lake by Springerville. Though it was not as cold as we expected the day was overcast and windy. Only two trout were caught from the floating fishing platform on the lake. Some anglers fished from shore and 3 anglers fished from inflatable water craft. In the afternoon of the 7 th we shifted our fishing to Silver Creek catching fish until sundown. We continued fishing and catching through the next day. Chris Riffle may claim bragging rights after catching and releasing about 30 Rainbow trout on a black bunny leached, craftily swum up and down stream without a bobber. New fishing friends were made among those attending the Retirees Trip. Fishing isn t always about catching big fish, as most of us already understand. Unfortunately one of the anglers health did not allow him to participate with us as we had hoped.
