2 A SPECIAL NOTE FROM OUR NEWSLETTER EDITOR Our TU Chapter is truly unique in many ways, not the least of which is our special brand of making people feel welcome. I hope that I have done my part on that score as well. Long may it continue. Writing our Chapter s Newsletter for the past 5 years or so has been a true pleasure and I count myself lucky to have had the opportunity. But it has become time to turn it over to someone new and I look forward to see what it will become in the future. We are looking for someone who may be interested in writing the Newsletter and I would be happy to chat with anyone about the assignment. 3 CHAPTER EVENTS UPCOMING MEETINGS Wednesday, February 28 Our own Carl Wyckoff took a trip last summer to fish in Greenland, not New Jersey this winter, but Greenland! Carl will fill us in on what it is like to fish on that icy continent. Casting for big fish is only part of the fun, rock climbing was also included. Wednesday, March 28 Craig Hull will be making his annual trip from his home in the Cumberland Valley and will be speaking about Catching Big Trout. To catch those trout you will need some flies. Craig can help you there too since he will also be bringing along his great supply of well tied flies. Wednesday April 25 Brian Cowden of Trout Scapes River Restoration LLC will visit us in late April and will talk about his extensive work on dam removal and river restoration projects. His topic is entitled: River Restoration: Alive and Well in New Jersey! Wednesday May 30 Tim Flagler noted fly tyer from TightLines Productions will be speaking to us on the subject: Secrets of the Ken Lockwood Gorge. A very worthwhile topic March 18 save the date Annual Banquet The last couple of Newsletters have had the wrong date listed for the Banquet. The correct date is Sunday, March 18 from 4-8pm. We apologize for any confusion. The Banquet always features great food and drink, big prizes and the ever popular bucket auction as well as a nice chance to get caught up with our fellow anglers after a cold winter. Donation to the bucket auction are always appreciated and are hereby encouraged. Popular items include baskets of cheer, movie tickets, etc. Contact Howard Brooks if you have any questions. 4 CHAPTER EVENTS Your support is everything. Our Chapter is very dynamic and involved in our little corner of New Jersey. We feature several well-known speakers throughout the year at meetings, we ve adopted a stream to stock and maintain. We also run several programs throughout the year fostering conservation, fly angling skills, social activities and community outreach. One way our Chapter supports these activities is through our $15 annual donation. The other is through our Annual Banquet. The Picnic, Pizza and Beer Nights, and Fly Tying for example are free to anyone who shows up and it is hard to argue with the fact that $15 is a great bargain. Our Annual Banquet is our primary funding for the year, our one and only major fundraising that supports the majority of our programs and outreach throughout the year. 5 CHAPTER EVENTS It s time to fill your fly boxes! Wednesdays in March Our Fly Tying Nights will continue in March 7, 14, and 21 to be exact. We will have both a Beginners Table and one for more advanced tiers. We do need a head count for our Beginner s Table to be sure we are prepared. Remember, the cost is free to both members and non-members so bring a friend if you wish. We provide 100% of the materials and tools at the beginners table. Materials for each fly will be provided at the advanced table, but please bring your own tools of you plan to participate. 7 OUR COMMUNITY Confessions from a One-fly Angler The 8th Annual New Jersey Fly Fisherman of the Year Event on Saturday 11/11/17. The weather was not as bad as Friday, weather wise. I took a strategic road trip to Califon, NJ on Friday morning. On Saturday morn I planned to fish small egg pattern but could not see to thread the eye of the fly, so I changed to a trio of squirminators that I tied. I caught a 14 inch rainbow towards the end of the first rounds. That catch put me smack in the middle of the pack, spot 6 of 11. That held up for the morn. The story of the morning was me... I heard one guy lost all his flies. I was that guy that lost his third fly on the last cast of 1st Round. It s weird hearing people tell a story about you when you are 4 feet away, but I got to follow up that I lost them at the end of the round, still caught a fish and ended up finished in the middle. So everyone fishes two 45 minute rounds in the morn and a bye. My second was a bye and I sat out the third round, no flies left. My Bad, I did not listen to Christine s advice, Stay away from flies that you break off more frequently than others... I break squirminators off. But, the day was a success, I competed, (never did that before or thought I ever would)caught a fish, (my goal for the day...so I did not get skunked and embarrass the Chapter) got on the board with a good enough score to put me in the middle of the pack (a bonus) Met and/or reacquainted with a lot of fine folks including our host Jim. Holland from Shannon s. Tom was very friendly and made it a point to interact with everyone during the day, a good guy! Contact was made with a couple of Chapters in order to develop a working relationship on projects with other Chapters on streams that we fish Spoke with one of our past speakers, Brian Cowden, who asked to come back and talk to us about his company, Trout Scapes, river restoration. One of the highlights was Casting for recovery,.. Anita from CFR was fun and educational to watch. She took all the marbles. 9 OUR COMMUNITY January Show in Edison Those who were able to attend the Edison, New Jersey on January were treated to a much larger venue than in the past. The Exposition Center featured more vendors and outfitters, expanded food opportunities, roomier aisles and was all under one roof. If you didn t get the chance this year, give it a try next year. PICKERING CREEK 2018 STOCKING SCHEDULE Pickering Creek will be stocked by the state of PA (PFBC) on Tuesday February 27 and again on Tuesday May 8. Feb. 27 Volunteers These two stockings will add over 1000 fish to the delayed harvest section. As we have in past years, we will provide float stocking for both dates so volunteers are needed.
