The class is geared for the beginner but also have some experienced tiers. Subject: Chattahoochee River #3 on American Rivers Most Endangered Rivers List Today, American Rivers listed the Chattahoochee River as #3 on its 2012 list of Most Endangered Rivers. The Chattahoochee River provides drinking water for millions in metro Atlanta, is one of America s best trout streams, and was recently designated as our country s first National Water Trail. The water war between Georgia, Alabama, and Florida has spurred proposals for costly new dams and reservoirs that would destroy recreation opportunities and wildlife habitat. A press release and fact sheet are attached. Please make your members aware of this listing (newsletter, Facebook, meeting announcement, web page ) and encourage them to take action by writing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers deny the permit request for Glades Reservoir (Hall County, GA). 5 Upcoming events GOLD RUSH FAMILY FUN DAY SET FOR SUNDAY OCTOBER 7, 2012 DETAILS TO FOLLOW SO BE SURE TO WATCH FOR THEM; GREAT BUCKET RAFFEL AND SILENT ACUTION ITEMS NOT TO MENTION GREAT EATS Gold Rush Funding Have you ever wondered how our TU chapter is funded? Probably not, but maybe you should. After all, it takes a considerable amount to do what we do. We contribute to worthwhile endeavors according to our mission _ Back-the-Brookie, Fly Fishing for Vets, Trout Camp, and the Smithgall education program to name a few. We subsidize our monthly meals (unless a member prepares it). We pay a fee for our website domain and hosting. We buy insurance to cover those working on our projects. We also have to buy numerous items from name tags and stamps to signs and canopies. So maybe that money comes from National TU? We receive two amounts from National for each fiscal year. The first is $15 for each new member; that was $30 this year. The second goes to Council in a lump sum for all the Georgia chapters. This year the amount was $2.50 for each member. Council then sent us $1 per member or $118. continued

6 Upcoming events As you can see, we would not survive long on what we receive from National. So how about dues to our Gold Rush Chapter? National forbids the requirement of dues to belong to a chapter. Nevertheless, some chapters do require some type of donation under various names. In fact, Gold Rush from its beginning had voluntary dues of $10 per year which almost everyone paid. Although we haven t mentioned that for several years now, some long-time members still give that $10 or more. So where is this article going? Just here _ FUNDRAISING is a necessary and important function of our chapter, and our Family Fun Day is when we do it. So, if Gold Rush is important to you, plan now to volunteer, fish, contribute, and have a great time at Frog Hollow on Sunday, October 7. Trout Camp June 10 thru June 15

7 Events continued Notes from 2 nd quarter TU council meeting The Quarterly TU Council Meeting was held on Sat May 19, 2012 in Peachtree City. Gold Rush was represented by Fred and Marge Ruppel. This was another informative and very productive meeting. We have entered into the busy time of the year with many chapters already involved with several events. The Council is also working on many projects and provided status and updates. Trout Camp is just next month - June and lots of work is underway to prepare. All campers are identified - 5 girls and 19 boys. Progress is being made to finalize arrangements. Also GA Council will be very involved in the TU National Meeting in Asheville NC in Sept. Donations for raffles, and silent actions are being gathered and all proceeds will come back to the councils. With this meeting being so close it is a great opportunity to see how TU National Meetings are done. Please let me you know if you are interested. A TU Nation program called - Five Rivers Program was discussed and the intent is to have chapters work with local colleges to help make sure the younger folks get involved with the TU mission. Several events have already been held with outstanding success. Examples are - Casting for Recovery at Smithgall, Fly Fishing for Vets, Kids Fishing Day at Rock Creek Hatchery and Tie 1 On event that provided a very nice contribution to Smithgall Woods. Tie 1 On event was so successful that council is looking at partnering with Bass Pro next year to get all chapters involved.

10 Activities and past events SPECIAL NEEDS KID FISING REDEO AT CHATTAHOOCHEE FOREST NATIONAL FISH HATCHERY If you have not been to this event you are missing something special. The pleasure the kids got out of catching fish was evident on their faces and there jumps of joy. 175 kids showed up for this event and a great time was had by all with lunch provided by the hatchery for the volunteers SEE PHOTOS BELOW Treating the Hemlocks at Camp Gilson --- Volunteers form Gold Rush TU treated 250 trees at the camp Gilson See photos below Smith Gall Woods kids fun day A casting area was set up for the kids to be hands on. They had to make at least three casts on their own to receive a sticker on their card ( towards awards given out at the end of the day) All the kids seemed to enjoy the hands on part of casting, I think we had the most enjoyable booth, we may have been topped by our neighbor s booth of BENJAMINE THE TRUTLE ( a 60 lbs tortoise from California ) He could really move for a turtle. Those attending representing Gold Rush TU were: Sherman Head, Ken McKinnon, John Simmons and Cole Landy SEE PHOTS BELOW
