1 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. The camp is designed to teach young boys and girls how to fly fish and tie flies. Sam Sedillo of TU organized this year s annual event. Dave Stanley has been involved with the camp for years. This year the TRF was also represented by club members Betsy Clark and Laura Murph. Along with Betsy and Laura, Kate Blubaugh, and Katie Stanley also were there to guide the young girl anglers and to teach them fly tying. It was a very rewarding weekend watching these young anglers learn the sport of fly fishing. The International Federation of Fly Fishers (IFFF) will be holding their 50th Anniversary Fly Fishing Fair in Bend Oregon on August and 15th. This event should prove to be an excellent one, with several programs, clinics and many activities scheduled. Check out their website for more details at With the Truckee River still sadly unfishable, the high altitude Sierra streams such as the N. Fork Yuba Rv. remain good options as well as stillwaters. Nevada s South Fork Res. and Knott Cr. Res. are good choices as well as California s Milton Res. and Crowley Lake which has been producing some very nice fish on chironomids all season long. For you anglers that don t mind a little drive, Klamath Lake usually fishes well in August. Concentrate on the Rocky Point area, the big fish at Klamath are drawn to the cool springs in this area. 3 The Angler s Line Page 3 Cabela s Fall Great Outdoors Days August 29 & 30, 2015 This year we will be having a table to promote the Club and our activities. I will need volunteers to man the table and talk to interested fly fishers with one person talking up the club while the other ties flies. Cabela s, as host, offers those who volunteer an employee discount for the weekend and a great lunch. I will need four volunteers on Saturday the 29 th, and four for Sunday the 30 th. For those of you who will tie flies, I will have a light there so all you need to bring is what you need to tie with. Wes Ong July 11 and 12th, 2015 Sierra Trout Camp Members of the Truckee River Flyfishers, a member club of the NCC/IFFF, joined with Trout Unlimited in a two day camp to teach stream entomology, conservation, fly tying and casting to a group of 20 students between the age of 11 and 13. There were 15 boys and 5 girls and each student was to have their own mentor. We met at Sage Hen Creek, at the University of California research station. It is just a few miles west of Truckee on Highway 89, the camp provided breakfast, lunch and dinner along with housing for all of the students and some volunteers over the two day period. Kate Blubaugh gave the casting instruction and many of the volunteers helped with individual instruction as well. The kids were enthusiastic and enjoyed all of the instruction Saturday and we took them fishing on Sage Hen Creek Sunday. Unfortunately the fish were not as enthusiastic as the kids and we caught few fish, those caught were small brookies under 10 inches, some under 4 inches. One of the features of the camp is an in stream viewing chamber. There the children and instructors were able to five about 30 feet of the stream through windows. This was a learning experience for me, for the first time I was able to view the movements of muddler minnows, and there were quite a few present. They don't swim much and kind of hop around, letting a fly sit on the bottom and occasionally giving it a short strip would appear to be the correct presentation. Great camp and I would encourage more participation next year. The members from the TRF present were Mark Warren,, Dave Stanley, Doug Ouellette, Betsy Clark and Laura Murph.

4 The Angler s Line Page 4 August 2015 Prospects The Drought: The lack of water has severely affected all moving water prospects, therefore I am not putting any on the prospects list except the Little Truckee. I will give a few current conditions. Truckee River: Flows have dropped to 7.5 cfs and IMHO you should not fish it! Little Truckee: The last time I checked the water was at winter flow levels but the water here comes out of the bottom of Stampede Reservoir and should be cold. Fish above Bohington Mills campground for the cooler water. The water has gotten a lot of pressure because it is the only viable moving water option in the area. East Carson River: Flow here were the best in the area but the fire has put a lot of silt in the river. Only think left to catch are planted fish, and they don t last long after the truck leaves. Lake Almanor: I heard that the Hex hatch here was good and it is still fishing good for both trout and small mouths. On hot days when power usage is high the powerhouse at Butt Lake is a good bet. Spooner Lake: Lots of small willing fish with maybe a 14 inch Brown hold over. Lots of stuff works here the key is to get in a floatation device and work the edges of the weeds and the deeper center of the lake. Milton Res. Water here can be too cold at times. I ve been here in the middle of summer and the temp is 46 degrees. If they stop letting water out of Jackson Meadows Reservoir the water will warm quickly. Most consistent method is a small PT and indicator fished in the channels. Rye Patch Res./Lahotan Res. I would not say this is a prospect for August but keep in mind that it will have very low water levels and fishing could be like shootin fish in a barrel. Whipers, carp, and walleye here. Carp: Several of us have been fishing Little Washoe Lake in Kayaks and have been doing ok as long as the wind does not put the fish down. Early morning is best for the kluppers. Use a hopper dropper for them. Others: Silver Fork of the American; West Walker, upstream of 395 to the Marine Base; Carter Lake, north of Susanville; or Yellow Creek West of Almanor. Or stay in the A/C and tie for the fall fishing. TRF Swap Meet The Annual Swap Meet will be held on Wednesday, August 26th at Mayberry Park, 5:30, we will have drinks, water and soda, available. If you are unfamiliar with Mayberry Park you take 4 th Street to Woodland Ave. take Woodland until it dead ends at the park. Bring your wallet and your excess equipment. There are always some great buys to make and great friends to visit with. Good chance to get some treasures, dispose of some treasures and get some firsthand fishing reports. e Angler s Line P
