1 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. Inside this issue: President s Letter Fly Tiers Round Table Prospects Discovery Museum Bloody Nymph Veteran s First Members Ship Upcoming Events: Jan 14, BOD Meeting, 6:00 Jan 20, GM Meeting, 6:30 NDOW, 1100 Valley Rd. President s Letter February 2016 As we move into February we are experiencing a good number of wet winter storms. The water cycles in our area usually consist of a drought - fire - flood scenario, reoccurring about every 8 to 14 years. We are coming out of another bad drought and now it is very possible we may see another flood situation. With a good snow pack, followed by warm heavy rains that melt the snow quickly, there comes a huge flash flood called a Chinook. I saw this happen in the Lake Tahoe Basin years ago. Over the past ten years there have been flood improvements on the Truckee River. Whenever the river does flood again, hopefully these improvements will help. The Truckee had a very good stretch of steady good flow for over a decade that produced some outstanding fish populations. But unfortunately, due to the severe drought the numbers are now low. The good news is that NDOW electro shocked the river in November with some areas holding some nice mature fish. The river needs to heal a bit but it is very resilient and should bounce back within a few short years. Everything is coming together for this year s annual banquet. It will be held at the Tamarack Junction in south Reno on Saturday, March19. Our guest speaker will be Joe Warren. He will be talking about fly fishing northeast Washington State. See our next newsletter for more info. The next Round Table will be Feb.10th. See Mike Hoffman s article in this newsletter for more info. Our next general meeting will be on Wednesday Feb. 17 and will feature Mike Sevon. Mike will be presenting a very informative show on Pyramid Lake. He is a retired biologist and has an incredible amount of true knowledge on all waters in Nevada and especially Pyramid Lake. I personally have learned a great deal on Nevada s fisheries from Mike. Don t miss this show! On Feb. 20th, Hickson Slough will be the spot for our next club fishout Tight lines, Doug O. February 2016 Feb 9, BOD Meeting, 6:00 Feb 17, GM Meeting, 6:30 NDOW, 1100 Valley Rd. Feb 20, Fishout, Hinkson Slough, weather permitting Mar 3, BOD Meeting, 6:00 Mar 19, Banquet

2 The Angler s Line Page 2 The Angler s Line By Mike Hoffman Fly Tiers Roundtable The 2016 Fly Tiers Roundtable season will kick off on Wednesday February 10 th at the NDOW meeting room on Valley Road at 6:30 pm. Our guest tier will be Mike Sevon. Mike is one of the best fly tier/fishermen in our area and he will be tying two of his go to bugs for fishing or local still waters. Check the recipes noted below! Don t forget to bring two (or more?) flies for the Roundtable Raffle. For each two flies you donate you get a raffle ticket and a chance to win a great box of HOT local bugs! Our guest tier for the March Roundtable will be Wes Ong. The meeting will be held on 3/9/16 at NDOW. Keep a tight line Mike Sevon s flies and recipes: Seal Bugger Hook TMC 5263 #8 Thread Olive Ultra 70 Tail Olive Marabou Rib Red Ultra Wire BR Dubbing Medium Olive Seal Sub Hackle Orange Barred Saddle Optional Weight.025 lead 8 wraps Mini Sheep Creek Hook TMC 5263 #16 Thread Olive Ultra 70 Bead 3/32 Gold or Copper Tail/Butt Brown Hackle Body Olive Chenille, Ultra or Hareline Velvet (fine) Wing Mallard or Wood Duck Flank

3 The Anglers Line Page 3 Prospects for February 2015 By Wes Ong Pyramid Lake: Generally this is a slow month but if January is an indication of what is to come the lake should be hot this month also. Lots of big fish have been caught recently in the Sutcliffe area. Have not heard much about the south end of the lake but the big fish have been scattered all winter. Pattern does not seem to be as important as what day you fish, (indicator or stripping) wind and overcast or storm seem to be the best days. During Blue Bird weather head for the deeper beaches. Crosby s will not be having their tournament this year. Hinkson Slough: Fish outing on the 20 th. Floating line with a sheep bugger, zebra midge, swallow, or a midge of gray with red wire is a good searching set-up. Also I heard that they have Tiger Trout in there now. Nevada license expires at the end of this month. Release the Grass Carp unharmed, they are there for a reason. Unfortunately the regular carp are back in there so one of these seasons NDOW will have to drain and poison it again. North Pond: This could be good if there are no fish biting at Hinkson Slough. President: Board of Directors & TRF Officers Doug Ouellette calvadaflyfishing@sbcglobal.net Vice President: M a r k W a r r e n markeraw@charter.net Secretary Tom Smith edsontiger@aol.com Treasurer: Tom Smith & Mark Warren American River: Heard that this winter steelhead run is the best they have seen in years. Lots of big fish there, bigger than average to 15 pounds. As always watch where you park and don t leave anything in sight, car break-ins are common. Amador: Pay to fish Foothill Lake near Ione, CA; this is generally a good winter fishery for rainbows that are bigger than 16 inchers. Truckee River: Lower river will see some good dry action this month with the overcast or weather a big help in driving a hatch. Only issue is are there any fish left East of town. When I drove by there every week of the summer it just did not look like any fish could survive! Not all water is productive here you have to search for the areas with good concentrations of fish and hatches. Little Truckee: The access this winter has been tough due to lots of snow on the road, but that is a good thing this year! It may be April before you can get in to fish. Rye Patch Res. According to Jan Nemic, the end of February through mid-april is the time to fish here for the walleye. Right now the lake appears to be open with no ice on it; this could be a real hot fishery this spring because the water is so low that it would be like shootin fish in a barrel. (News flash, due to an algae bloom there are no fish in Rye Patch Reservoir, a complete die off occurred in January) East Walker River: Lately the flows are below typical, 18 cfs, and there is anchor ice on the river. Use to like to fish here on Super Bowl Sunday but it may be a couple of months before you can fish here without the ice. Ruby Marsh: All the local wisdom is the marsh fishes best for trout in the winter. With the really cold temps we had in December I doubt that there is much fishable water. Call the refuge headquarters or NDOW before even considering a trip out here. South Fork Reservoir is completely ice over so I assume that the marsh is also. 4 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 4 d Hare No Name Damsel Nymph The No Name Damsel Nymph is a great still water fly pattern that s quick and easy to tie. I ve not only fished this fly pattern for trout, but also caught some nice smallmouth bass fishing near rocky points in Lake Almanor. This pattern can be fished shallow or deep with a fast or slow retrieve. HOOK - #10-14, Your favorite 2X long nymph hook THREAD Brown, 8/0 TAIL Marabou, Brown BODY Marabou, Green OVER BODY Marabou, Brown RIB Monofilament, 3X Maxima Chameleon HEAD Olive, Spectrablend nymph dubbing EYES Monofilament, 20lb Maxima Chameleon 1. Start thread near hook eye and tie in mono eyes. 2. Wrap thread back to the hook bend and tie in tail. (Approximately 20 barbs) 3. Tie in Mono rib. 4. Tie in green marabou plume by the tips, twist and wrap forward ¾ of shank, secure and trim. 5. Collect ½ of tail barbs and pull forward over body, wrap mono forward creating a segmented body and securing overbody. Lift overbody tips and secure mono. (Do not trim overbody tips) 6. Dub a bulky head, add a couple dubbing wraps around and in front of the mono eyes. 7. Pull remaining overbody tips forward over head and secure. 8. Pull overbody tips back and whip finish. I would tie this pattern in darker colors when fishing early in the season. Mike O Brien

We need six volunteers for: Saturday morning 10:00 am to 12:00 noon Saturday afternoon 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm Sunday afternoon 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm. Sunday afternoon specifically features Flies that work at Pyramid Lake. This is a great opportunity to promote the club and have a great time interacting with prospective new members, not to mention that Cabela s and Jamie Klund are great supporters of the club. Please contact Wes Ong at: to book a slot. General Membership Meeting This month's '' guest,'' speaker will be Mike Sevon with a slide presentation on the Pyramid Lake Fishery, from the biologists perspective. You won't want to miss this enlightening program. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 at the NDOW office at 1100 Valley Road on Wednesday February 17. Mike Sevon Contact information: Website: Mikesevonphotos.com Mailing address: Mike Sevon Box 946 Verdi,NV mikesevonphotos@yahoo.com Cell Phone: 775) I would like to thank all you who attended the sheep show, and there were a lot of us who attended. A bunch of kids went through the tables over a three day period and there were lots of smiling faces, both kids and parents. The kids may not have shown much skill but they showed plenty of enthusiasm and they took their, proudly displayed, flies with them. So again I would like to say thank you. Tom Once again, if you have not renewed your membership now is the time to do so.
