4 Baum Lake Fishout Report January 19th, 2013 By Don Sleeper We couldn t have picked a better weekend for the fishout at Baum Lake and for lots of snow.. But we all caught fish, some a lot and some not. The weather was a balmy 26 degrees when we started and a chilly 25 when we got off the water at 4 p.m. Saturday. No wind and we even took our coats off in the afternoon; it was warm with a high of 55. The snow and ice in the parking lot made walking and car traffic a real zoo Saturday morning. But it was fun. You can imagine it didn t take long before we were all catching fish in our pontoon boats or float tubes. Eleven members and guests showed up from the fly club, Terry Mich, John Logan, Larry Willis, Joe Kelly, Elten Hinkle, Bill Robinson, Curtis Robinson, Brian, Kenny, Chad and Don Sleeper. We used olive wiggle tails and small birds nest or midges on an intermediate sink tip. But the top producer was Terry Mich s dry fly with a size 16 nymph. Let s see more of you at the next fishout. Until then keep a tight line! Group Shot Nice 16 inch Brown Lunch in the parking lot. What did Baum Lake look like the weekend it was postoned? Fishing was Cold at Baum Lake! We went up and froze. We did however catch about 15 browns between the two of us. Fishing got better about the time we left. We made it back to watch the niners- packers. My feet warmed up about the time we got back to Redding... John 4

5 Fly of the Month for February 2013 Caddis Wet Fly By: Ray Narbaitz Thanks to the tutelage of long time fishing friends like Jim Gaumer and Dick Murrill, I like to fish Soft Hackle Flies. I find them to be effective on just about any kind of water from big rivers like the Lower Sac to small streams like Deer Creek. I have also used them with success on lakes like McCumber and Crater Lake. I have long felt that not enough people use them. This month s fly of the month is called the Caddis Wet Fly, and it is basically a Soft Hackle. This version verges on the point of being gaudy, but I like the effect because a lot of the Caddis that will be just below the surface will have quite a bit of air either under their exoskeleton or trapped around their body. While this version is tied with Caddis Green Ice Dub, feel free to tie it in colors that you think more readily match the color of the bugs on the water. This is an extremely easy fly to tie, and only takes a few steps. Hook: Curved Caddis Hook sizes 12 to 16; this one is tied on a 14 TMC Thread: Olive 8/0 or color to match fly Bead: Emerald, Green, Amber or color of your choice Glass Bead, size appropriate for the hook. Body: Caddis Green Ice Dub, or color of your choice. Hackle: Dark Dun or Olive dyed Hen Hackle. 1. Debarb hook, slide on the glass bead, and place it in the vise. Most glass beads are not counter sunk, so on small hooks, it may slide over the eye. If that happens, put a small bit of a super glue like Zap-a- Gap over the thread, and let the bead sit there for a short time to lock it in. 2. Start your thread, and wrap it down the hook to just a little ways past the bend and cut off the excess. 3. Dub the Ice Dub onto your thread. Ice Dub is very spikey, and can be hard to dub if you use too much. Use very sparse amounts, and dub it tightly onto the thread. 4. Wrap the dubbing up the shank of the hook, trying to taper it as you go up. Stop at the Glass Bead. 5. Tie in your hackle, and take two or three turns around the hook, right at the bead. Tie off the hackle, and trim away the excess. 6. Take a few wraps of thread so they force the hackle to lay back a bit over the fly. 7. Whip finish, put a small drop of head cement on the thread, and the fly is done. I have a new book that gives the definition for a large number of situations in the world of fishing. From time to time, I ll include some of those definitions along with the Fly of the Month. This month s definition is for Fly Tying. The art of attaching feathers, fur, wool, and silk to a tiny hook to create artificial lures that imitate insects, a skill easily mastered by anyone who can peel a grape blindfolded with a pair of tweezers and a butter knife while wearing oven mitts. It s not that tough honest. 5
