1 R E E L L I N E S Established We support catch and release. May 2018 MISSION STATEMENT The Arizona Flycasters Club is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization dedicated to encouraging, supporting, and educating its members and the community in the sport of fly fishing, the techniques of fly fishing, and the ethics of catch and release, which promotes the conservation of fish and their habitats. The organization s activities also promote friendship, enjoyment, sportsmanship, and safety. President s Lines What is a volunteer? Mr. Webster defines volunteers as people who enter into, or offer themselves for, any service of their own free will. Note the last part: own free will. Brad Norgaard President Don Mickus Vice President Alan Davis Secretary Barney Rouse Treasurer It becomes obvious after many years of serving as a volunteer for our club that, for some reason, of the 200+ members in our club, there is a fairly small group of repeaters, standbys, faithful, or whatever you might call them. Whatever event takes place, for whatever reason, you can count on seeing the same few faces from our club. I don t know about you, but I m pretty sick of seeing those faces! That isn t to say I don t love and appreciate them, because I really do. It s just that I feel cheated not getting to know the rest of you better and not getting your perspectives on how to make our club and community better. Those who donate an hour or two here and there can tell you they have enjoyed many rewarding experiences, met some very interesting people, and made some very good friends (in addition to accomplishing a lot for our club). Please do me and the rest of our repeaters a big favor and spare just a little time and let us get to know you better and hear your ideas. We currently need some new faces on the board as well as help in other areas. Please contact me or any board member, and let s help the club continue to succeed. Who knows? Maybe we ll get to be good friends. Maybe you ll change someone s life. Your prospective friend, Brad Norgaard AFC President president@azflycasters.com AFC is affiliated with Fly Fishers International, an organization dedicated to the betterment of the sport of fly fishing through conservation, restoration, and education.

3 Movie Night Fly Fishing Film Tour 2016 General Meeting Thursday, May 10, 7:00 PM, Sunnyslope Community Center Due to our speaker having some medical procedures this week we have adjusted our program's topic to present the Fly Fishing Film Tour AFC also will provide the soft drinks and popcorn. So come on out and enjoy the evening. Library Book Sale at May 10 General Meeting Bob Sickles, Librarian We will have a major book sale at the May 10 meeting! We are liquidating our library and will have unbelievable prices on lots of great books. Connie Sullivan and I have spent hours selecting and pricing books for the big sale. You do not want to miss this! Education Class Saltwater Fly Fishing In Southern California Tuesday, May 15, 7:00 PM, Sunnyslope Community Center Ron Robinson, Education Chair Our May 15 class will focus on saltwater fly fishing in Southern California coastal waters. This class will help all members, especially those going on the San Diego trip organized by Jim Rondoni. We are very lucky to have club member Mark Pearlstein, who has fished much of these waters, discuss basic strategy and tactics. If you would like, Ron will provide materials and club tying equipment for you to tie a Clouser fly that has always produced for Mark. Make plans now for our June 19 class, which will focus on selecting line, leader, and tippet, and the knots to make them work, for the club trip to the San Juan River in October. I think you will find this class very informative, as it is based on the most recent studies of materials and techniques. You might find a combination that is more forgiving than what you have been using. As a special bonus, Mark Pearlstein will give you some basics on fishing a drop shot and Czech technique to increase your success rate. Our general education classes are held at the Sunnyslope Community Center from 7:00 to 8:45 PM. If you have any questions about our classes, give Ron a call at Winn Campground Outing in the White Mountains Thursday, May 17 through Sunday, May 20 Jim Rondoni, Outings Chair AFC will be at Winn Campground in the White Mountains from Thursday, May 17 through Sunday, May 20. Our potluck will be held on Saturday, May 19, at 4:00 PM. There are about 40 sites still available. I m at Site #3. You can make reservations online at recreation.gov, the AFC webpage, or on Eventbrite under Fishing Opportunities, or see me at the May 10 meeting. If you have questions regarding the outing, call me at
4 Two Slots Have Opened For The Grey Reef Anglers and Wingshooting Gala! May 25-28, Casper, Wyoming John Doss, Programs Chair There is still time to join the fun in Wyoming! A couple slots have opened up. Contact John Doss at or visit Fred Johnson was the lucky winner of the Grey Reef Anglers fishing trip. Congratulations Fred! Thanks to everyone who participated. We raised $740 for Trout In The Classroom. For each school that participates, about 400 kids, administrators, volunteers, and parents learn why it is important to keep kids in touch with nature. 4 Clouser Swimming Nymph Hook: TMC 200R sizes 4-10 Thread: 6/0 color to match body Weight: Lead-free wire.020 Tail: Marabou or fur with crystal flash on each side Rib: Mylar tinsel oval or flat Body: Dubbing olive, orange/rust, brown, or cream Wing case: Peacock herl Legs: Speckled hen feather Head: Thread 1. Place a debarbed hook in the vise. Using the lead-free wire, make wraps for the underbody of the fly. Make extra wraps by the eye for the thorax. 2. Start the thread just in front of the wire and wrap back and forth over the wire, securing it. Bring the thread to the bend of the hook and tie in the marabou tail along with crystal flash on either side of it. Next tie in a strand of Mylar for the ribbing. 3. Now begin to dub the body, forming a taper towards the eye of the hook. Be sure to leave room for the thorax and legs at the front of the hook. 4. After the body is dubbed, wrap the Mylar up to the point where the thorax will start. Be sure to spiral wrap the Mylar to allow the body color to show through. 5. Tie in five to seven strands of peacock herl to be used as the thorax. Wrap the thread all the way to where the body ended to start the thorax. Dub the thorax just as was done for the body, making it larger in diameter. Fold the peacock over the thorax to form the wing case, tie it off, and clip the excess. 6. Finally, prepare the speckled hen feather for the legs by stripping off the fibers from one side of it. Tie in the feather in front of the thorax and make one or two wraps around the hook. Tie off the feather and clip the excess. Pull the fibers of the feather around to the bottom of the hook and secure them with several thread wraps. Form a neat, thread head and whip finish. Created by Bob Clouser for smallmouth bass, it s an extremely versatile fly that can be used for many species, including bass, carp, and trout. Depending on the size and color, the Clouser swimming nymph imitates many food sources, including leeches, damselfly nymphs, dragonfly nymphs, crayfish, and baitfish. You can fish it deep, shallow, fast, or slow. The fly is immensely popular with lake anglers.
