1 Tight Lines Sept San Luis Obispo, CA Greg & Mary Lugo, Editors PRESIDENT S LETTER Lew Leichter Sept 2016 John Gierach: I enjoy fishing too much to risk my life at it. Death can really cut into your fishing time. NEW MEMBERS: Let us welcome our newest members James Bettancourt, Victoria DeLeon (member Matt Southwood is her husband), Michael Davis and his son Ben, and returning member Randy Dobbin. We look forward to getting to know you better and spending time on the water with you. SUGGESTIONS FOR BANQUET SPEAKER? Our 2017 banquet will be on Saturday March 25 th. Believe it or not it is not too early to get a speaker. If you have suggestions, please let me know. We want programs that hopefully will be of interest to all who attend so one that deals with history, travel, etc. as well as fish is well received DONATION SUGGESTIONS: As previously mentioned we are in the process of considering requests for donations. If you have suggestions, please contact a board member. We will decide on the distribution of our donation funds at the October board meeting. SEPTEMBER MEETING and PROGRAM: Our September program will feature Lance Gray. I met Lance a few years ago at the Pleasanton show and we ve been trying to co-ordinate our calendars to arrange for his visit. In the meantime, Lance has been a great supporter of our annual fundraiser and last fall my grandson Shane and I spent a really enjoyable day with Lance chasing steelhead on the Feather River. Lance will do a tying session before the meeting and will talk to us about the Feather River country. Hope you can attend and meet and thank Lance for his support (see below for more about Lance). 3 Thursday, September 8, 2016 at 6:30pm Margie s Diner, 1575 Calle Joaquin, SLO Lance Gray Steelheading on the Feather The Feather River located in Oroville, CA has a large Fall and Spring run of steelhead. The presentation gives a well-rounded view of the river. The lecture portion of this presentation covers history, angling information, access points, fly-fishing techniques and flies. Lance will go into the difference of the Fall run verses the Spring run fish and the different tactics we use for targeting these great fish. Lance and Kirsten have more than 50 years combined experience in fly fishing. Lance started fly fishing with his father and brother Lincoln at age 7. In his teens, he began tying flies commercially for shops all around Northern California. At 17, he went to work at Powell's in Chico, working in the fly shop and building rods. He guided for Powell s, conducted fly-tying and fly-fishing schools, and traveled. In 1993, Lance and Kirsten started Saltwater Innovations, a company that manufactured and distributed products for saltwater fly fishing. Lance s Crystal Popper, Gray s Billfish Fly, the KO Charlie line and the Raghead Crabs are all Saltwater Innovations products. Kirsten worked behind the scenes, handling the dayto-day operation running the manufacturing floor of the company. In 2003 they launched Lance Gray & Company, a full-service outfitter offering guided trips, fly-fishing schools, workshops and a travel agency. Lance conducts presentations at fly clubs and outdoor shows and supports local groups like Cub Scouts and 4H. He's a signature tier for Aqua Flies, pro staff member for Sage and Rio and is a featured writer, with articles published in Angling Trade Magazine, California Fly Fisher, Fly Fishermen, Sierra Fisherman and Northwest Fly Fishing. Kirsten is a fantastic photographer who's had images published in periodicals and on websites throughout the outdoor industry. Check out our new online store at (3

5 SLFF Tying Group - Jim Snodgrass A. P. Nymph Fly The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, September 1st at 6:30. Jim Snodgrass will demonstrate the A.P. Nymph Fly. Jim found this fly to be very successful when he was fishing for Rainbow Trout at Little Crater Lake, earlier this year. Little Crater Lake is off Highway 44 toward Susanville just in case you want to try out the A.P. Nymph Some think that the "A.P." stands for the late Andre Puyans, the designer of this fly. However, it actually represents "All Purpose". Andre designed this nymph pattern during the early 1960's while teaching Vietnam War Vet's how to tie flies for rehabilitation. The nymph fly was designed to look like the mobile nymphs that swim and crawl underwater, and are an attractive food source for the trout. These nymphs have gills along the abdomen as well as filaments within the abdomen and thorax areas. Andre found that natural aquatic fur dubbing, such as muskrat/beaver, works better than the usual rabbit fur. The legs of a natural nymph are swept back along the sides, not underneath. So each of Andre s patterns represent these leg features with swept back fibers. Andre also noted pronounced heads on nymphs that were generally the same color and texture as the rest of the body, so he dubbed a small head in front of the thorax with the same body material. Materials: The following are the material that will be used for the A.P. Nymph Fly: Thread - Black 8/0 Hook - Size #18 12, TMC 3761 Abdomen, thorax, head - Black Beaver Dubbing or equivalent Tail, wing case, tail, legs - Black Moose Hair Rib - Copper Wire Thorax - Lead Wire.010 All materials will be supplied, but be sure and bring your hair stacker and your own thread black 8/0.
