1 Tight Lines April San Luis Obispo, CA Greg & Mary Lugo, Editors PRESIDENT S LETTER Lew Leichter April 2017 John Gierach: Grayling have always reminded me of the dinosaur-like early reptile called a dimetrodon that also had a big spine sail on its back and in fact looks like a huge, hideous, flesh-eating grayling with legs. Paleontologists have speculated that the dimetrodon sail was an organ for dissipating heat, but I don t believe it. Clumsy and otherwise useless accessories from antlers on a bull elk to red convertibles on older guys have always come down to sex. NEW MEMBERS: Let s welcome our newest members Mike Mize and Susan Lockner. It was good to meet Susan at the banquet. We look forward to getting to know you better and spending time on the water with you. BANQUET: It s always good to have the banquet in our rear-view mirror. It takes a lot of work and I want to thank our hard working board and the others who volunteered for helping us have another successful event. Special thanks to Sheri and Ron Bryant, and Mike Powers for all the hard work in planning, organizing and administering the banquet, and to Rich Chubon, Bob Bayer, Mike Powers and George Protsman in acquiring all the donations for our silent auction. Also, to those who attended, participated in the silent auction, donated to the silent auction and purchased raffle tickets thanks for your support. For those of you that are not in one of these categories we ll let you catch up next year. IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS WE WILL COMPILE A LIST OF SILENT AUCTION ITEMS THAT DID NOT SELL AND SEND OUT AN EBLAST FOR A LAST CHANCE TO BUY. PS Our apologies for those of you who won fly boxes in the silent auction and ended up with the wrong box of flies. Let us know and we ll do our best to straighten it out. APRIL PROGRAM: Our guest will be Jim Cox from the Western Rivers Conservancy. To learn more about WRC and the good work they do check out their website (see below for more info). (1

Included in the program is stunning photography of past and current projects including work on some of the most iconic fly fishing rivers across the West including Idaho s Salmon River, Oregon s John Day, North Umpqua and Sandy Rivers, the Yampa and Rio Grande in Colorado, the Madison River in Montana, California s Smith River, Santa Margarita River and Klamath Rivers, and Washington s Hoh River and Kennedy Creek among many others. 4 Attention Fly Tiers Come Join Us!! Tuesday April 25 th Place - Odd Fellows Hall Time - 6:30 PM April Fly To Be Announced March s Fly Tying Session Featured the Bouncing Betty The last fly tying session was held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday, March 28 th. Jim Snodgrass demonstrated the Bouncing Betty, which he discovered from an article in the California Trout Magazine. Ralph and Lisa Cutter wrote the article on the Bouncing Betty that was created after the couple searched the Madison River for a lost anchor. The anchor was never found, but they did discover a large number of stonefly nymphs hiding under the boulders in a very swift river. They watched the black nymphs, from a one-quarter to two inches in length, jettison from the riverbed and pondered how to make a nymph fly that sinks like their lost anchor thus the creation of the Bouncing Betty began. Materials: Thread - Black UNI 3/0 ( 6/0 or 8/0 will work) Hook - Tiemco 2457, size 8 to 18 Bead - Black Tungsten Lead to.035 Lead Wire Wings - White Goose or Turkey Biots Collar - Brown Hareline Ice Dub Bouncing Betty Article: California Trout; Jan/Feb 2017 issue; pages 12 & 13. 5 CLUB CASTING CLINIC 2017 The 2017 casting clinic is now complete. Three Saturdays about a week apart are now in the books, and I m already looking forward to 2018 s clinic. The clinic was limited to 25, and we pretty much filled up the available area of the grass at Laguna Lake. Groups of around 6 or 7 were assigned to an instructor, and an area was set up for practice. The instructors spent a lot of time on correcting our casting styles, giving tips and techniques to correct flaws that allow a better likelihood of catching fish. Also to allow a full day of fishing without doing damage to our bodies! There were a lot of comments received from walkers and drivers/bikers upon viewing our activities. Several people mentioned an interest in resuming the hobby, and asked for information. (At the next meeting, pick up a few SLFF business cards, and pass them out, as this made for an easy way of giving them pertinent information while casting class was about to begin.) A special thank you to our casting instructors: Sally Stoner, Chad McPartland, Todd Tose, Eric Sherar, Bob Hurd, and Bernard Pieters. From the beginning caster to the more advanced, everyone made improvement towards becoming a better caster. And a very special thanks go to Bernard Pieters for organizing the event, and assigning students to instructors, as well as doing the administrative stuff that happens behind the scenes. First one there, and last one to leave, Bernard, thank you! While the 2017 casting clinic is now complete, you should all know that our casting instructors are available for individual instruction. See the newsletter for contact information. Greg Lugo Please link on David Holmes Flickr page above to view great photos of this years Casting Clinic (5

It then covers Euro nymphing gear & rigging; Casts for Euro nymphing and fishing and detecting strikes using a Euro nymphing outfit. It also includes recipes for 14 "confidence" nymphs. Bugs of the Underworld with Ralph & Lisa Cutter: This video is about the insects themselves with some amazing photography. It does not deal with flies or patterns. 11 Announcing the SWCIFFF Riptide Rendezvous! Calling all fly anglers! On Saturday, October 21, 2017, the SWCIFFF will hold its first annual Riptide Rendezvous, a flyfishing-only surf fishing contest. The event will be held at Rincon Beach Park in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County There is no cost to enter the event, which will follow a format similar to Al Quattrocchi s previous One Surf Fly events. Anglers are restricted to the use of just one fly during the allotted fishing time, and all fish will be measured, photographed, and released. In addition to awards for first, largest and most fish caught, there will be a great raffle of fly-fishing and outdoor gear, with all proceeds benefiting the Southwest Council, International Federation of Fly Fishers and their related outreach programs. Past surf fly fishing events have been a great place to see old friends, make new friends, and share a tale or two, on top of helping raise money for a worthy cause. Make sure you mark the date on your calendar! More details to come. We ll be launching a website and social media page soon with the details as they are announced. John Loo Rendezvous Director SLFF MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION An individual regular membership is $35.00 per year For 12 months (January through December). Enrollment after July 1 st is $20.00 for the remainder of the year.
