1 Tight Lines Oct San Luis Obispo, CA Greg & Mary Lugo, Editors PRESIDENT S LETTER Lew Leichter October 2016 John Gierach: I can get just as aggravated with fisherman that are more snotty than I am instead of less so and it may be in the final analysis that there are only two kinds of anglers, those in your party and the assholes. NEW MEMBERS: Let s welcome our newest members Todd Broussard, Allan Pena and George Shearer. It was good seeing George along with some other new members at the Fly Fishing 101 class and we ll wet a line with him on the Kern outing. We look forward to getting to know you better and spending time on the water with you. ELECTION TIME: As we enter the 4th quarter it's time to start planning and organizing for December will be our annual meeting and election of board members. Our current officers, board and committees have done a great job this year and I hope many of them will return. At the same time, it seems our club is becoming a "same old thing" organization. We need some fresh ideas. It would therefore be very beneficial to get a few others of you involved as you bring fresh ideas and perhaps a better way to do things to our club. Being on the board or on a committee does not require you to be an experienced fly fisher, is not hard, stressful or very time consuming. If you want to be part of the team that plans and organizes our club s activities I want to encourage all of you, old and new members, to consider helping by being on the board or one of the committees. So let us hear from you, I know you will enjoy it. BANQUET AND BANQUET SPEAKER: Our 2017 banquet will be on Saturday March 25 th so mark your calendar. Looks like we ll have a neat banquet speaker and program. We ll let you know as soon as we finalize the arrangements DONATIONS: We are compiling the donation suggestions. We ll approve them at the October board meeting and announce them in the November newsletter. OCTOBER MEETING and PROGRAM: Our October program will feature club member Rich Chubon sharing his experiences chasing bone fish in the Caribbean Thanks in advance to Rich. If you have a program you would like to share at an upcoming meeting let us know and we ll get you on the calendar. (see below). (1

Our club will be teaching an all-day Beginning Fly Fishing class with the morning in the classroom and the afternoon on the water. Hope to see you there (see poster below to register and for more info). Oct 28 th -30 th - Club outing to the Kern River. Primarily a beginners mentoring outing all are welcome to attend. We have 12 sign ups to take Guy Jeans Fly Fishing the Kern class - 2 half day sessions on Saturday (1 in AM & 1 in PM). 3 Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 6:30pm Margie s Diner, 1575 Calle Joaquin, SLO Rich Chubon Bonefish Our Caribbean Experiences Rich Chubon will provide a program on fishing for Bonefish on the islands of Grand Bahamas and Grand Cayman. Bonefish, sometimes called Banana fish, Lady fish, or Round Jaw fish are among the best fighting fish found on salt water flats. Fishing for these silver ghosts are both challenging and rewarding. There is nothing more exciting than a hook-up and run of a Bonefish. Rich s program is based on his own fishing experiences on Grand Bahamas and Grand Cayman Islands. It s a long plane ride to these Caribbean islands, but is well worth it. Both islands offer great bonefish opportunities as well as beautiful beaches, good food and a warm Caribbean culture. Rich s program is geared for the do it yourselfers. It will include how to prepare for the challenges of fly fishing for bonefish, the equipment and flies you will need, how to find a guide, and other tips for a successful bone fishing adventure. (3

4 SLFF Tying Group - Jim Snodgrass October Caddis The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall 520 Dana Street in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, October 6th at 6:30. Rich Chubon will demonstrate how to tie Ken Morrish s October Caddis. This imitation October Caddis is used by many for a very simple reason, it catches more fish. It is a no fuss pattern that employs an extended foam body that floats high like a cork and a heavily hackled forward portion that allows skilled angles to bump, skitter, skate, and dance the fly across the river much like the naturals. Rich Chubon s hand tied fly The October Caddis is the most anticipated hatch in the fall in Northern California. The bugs are large, size eight on most rivers, and provide the last big mean before winter sets in on local trout streams. The October Caddis can be used to draw strikes from Steelhead. It is no wonder that Rich plans on teaching the group how to tie this fly. 7 O'Neil Forebay Striper Trip Nov 11th - 13th, 2016 Leader: Mark Shelton ( ; mshelton@calpoly.edu) What: Fishing for mostly schoolie, some larger striped bass, with the occasional largemouth bass thrown in. How: Float tubes, pontoon boats, kayaks, wading, power boats all work. Stripping streamers like clousers, zonkers, deceivers, and flashtail whistlers on I-lines or sink-tip/full-sink lines works best. Top water action can be good in low light (poppers, gurglers, etc.). Rod/line size 6-8 is best, but lighter and heavier gear works. Stripers aren't leader shy, so 6 or so feet of 12lb. mono leader is good. I use fluoro, but doubt it matters. The forebay ranger station opens at sunrise, usually about 6:30 a.m. in fall. Wind can be bad, so you need to plan for it. There are flats on the west and south end of O'Neil that are easily waded and can hold quite a few stripers. Reports from late September have been so-so, but fishing for stripers usually gets good by the time of our trip. Where: Just west of I-5 by Santa Nella, 3 hours north of SLO. Lodging: Some folks like to camp at the lake; most stay in Motel 6 very near the forebay (I've found it surprisingly clean in 3 visits). Motel 6 Santa Nella/Los Banos: Gonzaga Rd., 3 miles west of I-5. Ph. (209) When: I'll head up Friday and fish that afternoon and Saturday, returning home that eve. Lew will have room in his boat for 1 or 2 fishermen Saturday and Sunday, probably 1/2 days both. Bonus: We meet for our traditional Basque dinner at Wool Grower's Restaurant, 609 H. St., Los Banos, about 10 miles east of the reservoir. Plan to be there by 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 for a great family-style dinner with red wine and dessert. The dinner is almost worth the trip in itself. (7

8 TRIP REPORT - The Variety Special Andy Malovos Our annual over night trip aboard the SEA JAY turned out to be a most interesting experience. Attending were club members Rich Chubon, Steve Soenke, Jim Small, Peter Van Hest, Andy Malovos, and Mike Forrest - club president of The Saltwater Fly Rodders Pacific # 1 out of Montrose in SOCAL. Having had a red-hot trip last year catching bonita out at Santa Cruz Island, we knew that fishing at the Channel Islands could provide an exciting experience from very different fishes and marine creatures. Skipper Donnie Fuqua had us at Santa Cruz Island by 7AM just in time for a quick, ferocious yellow tail tuna bite. With a 4 inch buck tail Clouser, Peter V. hooked and landed a nice 12 pound yellow that fought very hard. Mike Forrest had one clobber his turquoise Clouser fly, however the yellow broke him off in the rocks close to shore. We set our drags tighter and switched to pd. leaders, but the yellows thumbed their noses and left. Nice calm 70 degree water produced a steady bite of hard fighting inch calico bass hard strikers who do relentless battle. Donnie moved us around all morning to different coves fishing in feet of water. Rich Chubon caught 2 nice bonita, and their fighting qualities made him a believer. Steve Soenke landed a grumpy calico. Jim Small battled a feisty mackerel that would not quit. Oh yes, my blue/white Clouser fooled a nice barracuda, all of this amidst heavy kelp and fish stealing sea lions. About 2 PM, Donnie had us reel up for the ride home. Lo and behold the U.S. Coast Guard showed up in a rubber boat and wanted to do a boat inspection! Very professional and courteous, they inspected every hatch and bunk on the 46 foot SEA JAY, but found zero. That is OK. We still had a great time!
