1 Tight Lines Oct San Luis Obispo, CA Greg & Mary Lugo, Editors PRESIDENT S LETTER Lew Leichter October 2015 John Gierach: Exchange from a PBS science program: Earnest interviewer: Can you put that in layman's terms? Rumpled physicist: No! To put it another way, an ichthyologist knows about trout and an entomologist knows about bugs, but it's the fly tier who knows how to fool a trout into thinking something is a bug when it's not. ELECTION TIME - Time To Get Involved Unfortunately we have had virtually no response from any of our 100+ members from last month's "call to duty". I'm not telling you anything you don't know, but by continuing to ask the same members to do the planning, organizing and heavy lifting year after year we will at some point experience burn out. Without new members coming up through the organization we will be in a world of hurt. If this is what you want for the future of our club that's your call. Enough said! A GOOD READ Two good steelhead articles in the October edition of California Fly Fisher. I enjoyed Russ Chatham s reminiscing on the early days in his article How to Catch at Least a Thousand Steelhead on a Fly in One Season in California. He really vents on how we got from we were to where we are today and those responsible. Good for him! Also, Mike E Wier s article on our own SoCal Steelhead. I would like to see us get more engaged in efforts to help these wonderful fish. (1

3 Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 6:30pm Margie s Diner, 1575 Calle Joaquin, SLO Striper Fishing San Luis Reservoir & O Neill Forebay Lee Haskin Lee will do a special TYING SESSION STARTING AT 5 pm. He will be tying his San Luis Smelt. This fly represents the primary baitfish at San Luis. See this fly on his website. Go to "Flies" and look under "Lee's Minnow". If time permits he will also tie his Gurgler. For more info visit Lee's website Lee Haskin began his fishing career in the late fifties, at about 10 years old. Learning how to tie his own flies followed shortly, where he, broadminded and versatile, at an early age, cast his creations to carp on his home waters, the Pajaro River, and as a teenager, fished side-by-side with his fly-fishing father, on trout waters throughout the California Sierras. However, in 1967 Lee caught his first striped bass at the mouth of the Pajaro River, just prior to moving to Long Beach to attend college. After settling in to college, Lee discovered the many species of fish that would readily come to the fly. His primary target was the Bonita, found in the San Gabriel River, near the college. In the early 1970 s Lee began to fish San Luis Reservoir and O Neill Forebay, with a primary interest in catching stripers with top water bugs. About that same time Lee and old friend and fishing buddy, Del Brown, (talk about good company!) began fishing the South San Francisco Bay for Stripers. Del and Lee fished from Coyote Point to Candlestick Park throughout the 1970's. Then the Bay's incredible striper fishing dropped off, and Del began his world record run for permit. Lee concentrated his efforts once again on the San Luis Reservoir and O'Neill Forebay, targeting the flats and islands along Highway 156 on the O'Niell Forebay, and also, depending on the season, along the dam and many accessible coves, fishing from a float tube. Lee has fished these areas successfully since the early 80 s. Although Lee enjoys catching stripers throughout the year on his own flies, he is particularly fond of throwing his favorite gurgler patterns along the weed beds of the O¹Niell Forebay. Lee found that the gurgler pattern, modified somewhat, could be deadly on big northern pike. After some additional modifications, Lee found that the gurgler could be adapted to be a durable, easy-casting pattern for silver salmon, as well. Lee found that his Gurgler Series could fill a niche with top-water loving fly fisherman around the world, and enjoys introducing people to this incredible pattern. (3

4 SLFF Tying Group Jim Snodgrass The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, October 1st at 6:30pm. Electric Deceiver Rich Cubon will demonstrate the tying of an Electric Deceiver, which Rich says is his Go to Fly for Strippers. The Electric Deceiver Fly pattern was developed by Al Quattrocchi. Al is an avid fly angler, fly tier, artist and, photographer in Southern California who developed a number of saltwater patterns. Al s Electric Deceiver is a modified version of Lefty Kreh s original Deceiver pattern. Al s fly is shown on the left. Rich volunteered to demonstrate the Electric Deceiver because he says it is a good fly for catching both Largemouth Bass and Strippers. Timing is everything and the October program meeting is on Striper fishing at the O Neil Forebay and San Luis Reservoir. Those attending the session will have flies tied just like Rich s, shown on the right, and will be ready for Stripper fishing before the meeting. All materials will be supplied, but be sure and bring your own thread and bodkin Rich recommends 3/0 white thread or clear mono, fine thread. Check out these web sites if you would like more information. (4

6 Channel Islands Fishout Trip Report Good Start - Better Finish Club Outing Aboard SEA JAY A Great Time Our trip to the Channel Islands on Tuesday September 22 nd, produced lots of strong hard fighting Bonita who bent the rods of the 6 fly fishermen attending. We were a mixed bunch with Jim Small and Doug Daniels from Santa Lucia Fly Fishers, Adrian Uribe and Scott Boller from the Saltwater Flyrodders Pacific #1 out of Montrose, Peter Van Hest and myself, Andy Malovos. Peter and I are members of both clubs. Jim, Doug and Scott had one thing in common: this was their first trip saltwater fly-casting from a boat in the ocean! We had nice mid-70's weather with calm seas and little wind. The nine conventional boats from the Channel Islands Sport Fishing dock had caught 157 yellow tail tuna the day before our trip. We were excited. What neat fly of mine will fool a big fish? Scott and Adrian had tied flys Monday night in anticipation. Skipper John Fuqua went past Anacapa Island to China Cove, on Santa Cruz Island, the scene of many great battles with the unpredictable pelagics. We immediately got into a hot Bonita fight with several rods bent and fishermen scampering after their fast running biters. Adrian, Peter and I were coaching the new guys and Donnie Fuqua the Skippers' son was unhooking our catch. Most of the fish were released, but a few were kept for future dinners. The bite lasted from about 6:30AM to 8:30AM. John decided to try for some Calico Bass. On past trips, they have provided big fish however, very few appeared. John figured there was too much bait in the area. One guy (who will go un-named) said, "You know that the fish quit biting at 11AM!" Famous last words. The new guys had been hanging in there. This is not an easy sport to do on a boat. At Pedro Point on the East side of Santa Cruz Island, we got into a Bonita madhouse. Jim Small, who had patiently worked at it, started catching one fish after another. Blue/white Clouser and small Sardinia flys with peacock herls were hot. This is what you pay your money for- action that won't quit. Oh yes, it is wonderful to coach guys and see them totally enjoy themselves. Hooked forever. At 2PM we had to head back to the landing. I estimate we caught and released about 80 fish. New guys got about 10 each. After a long battle, Adrian Uribe got the biggest and most interesting - a 5-pound Bullet Tuna with speckles on it. Wait until next year. If you want to tangle with these fish call Ken Lindsay at The Fishermen s Spot in Van Nuys who also charters fly fishing trips to the Channel Islands this Fall. Might get in on a Yellow Tail madhouse! Andy Malovos (6
