1 Tight Lines Feb San Luis Obispo, CA Greg & Mary Lugo, Editors PRESIDENT S LETTER Lew Leichter February 2017 John Gierach: I ve fished a fair number of roadside creeks around the west over the years and I ve admired many more from a car window on my way to fish somewhere else. I ve come close to wrecking my pickup a few times because I was watching the creek instead of where I was going. Imagine a narrow, winding road a trout rising in a little pool, and a UPS truck in the oncoming lane. Luckily my friends and I have developed an ass-backwards system whereby the driver watches the stream and the passenger watches the road. Conversations degenerate into shorthand. One guy says Rise. The other guy says Heads Up. NEW MEMBERS: Let s welcome our newest members Ernie Dossa and Don Nott. We look forward to getting to know you better and spending time on the water with you. SURVEY UPDATE: Our greeters at the January meeting were a big plus. Good feedback from our guests who became new members at the meeting. Mark Shelton has contacted those of you asking to be mentored. Mentors have been assigned to those that responded to Marks questionnaire. If we missed you for some reason it s never too late to contact Mark and we ll sign you up. We are trying to add some outings particularly to the west side of the Sierras. Rich Chubon contacted those of you who offered to host the outings and frankly your response to Rich is disappointing. WE CANNOT CONTINUE TO COUNT ON THE SAME FEW MEMBERS TO HOST OUR OUTINGS SO PLEASE GET BACK TO RICH AND OFFER TO HELP. Andy Malavos is arranging for us to have surf perch outings every month rotating between 3 locations: Morro Bay and north, Avila down to Guadalupe and Jalama south to Carpentaria. These outings will be on short notice and announced via e blast. We missed in January due to lousy conditions on our beaches. I ve contacted those of you who indicated you would do a program at one of our meetings. We will have two member programs later this year. Our nominating committee (Bernard, Rich and me) met and we will be contacting some of you who indicated you would be willing to serve on our board. Thanks to all who indicated you would consider helping. We ll continue to keep you updated. (1

5 Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 6:30pm Margie s Diner, 1575 Calle Joaquin, SLO Gary Bulla Fly Fishing Baja and the Amazon Gary Bulla s presentation will take anglers through the fishing season in Baja Mexico. The diversity of fish in Baja waters means anglers can revisit Baja at other times of the year and have very different quarry. Panga fishing from large outboard skiffs close to deepwater can produce rod bending fish that test your knot tying. And they could be any one of at least ten varieties! It can also mean sight casting to rooster fish or dorado on the surface, a sport sure to provide a large dose of adrenalin. Nights are spent in a comfortable hotel eating sushi and fresh fish off the BBQ, tying flies, sampling tequila, learning knots and comparing stories of big fish caught and wildlife like whales, dolphins, and turtles seen. But fishing in Baja with Gary can also mean paddling kayaks or wading in a river estuary among the mangroves casting lighter tackle for broomtail grouper, corvina, mangrove snapper, jack crevalle, spotted bay bass and African pompano. Nights are spent on a remote island with fine food and drink supplied at the base camp by experienced staff. No extra charge for swimming, snorkeling or relaxing on the sand and watching the stars. Gary will share his discoveries with the club, including tackle and techniques for the dazzling variety of fish south of the border. As you will see, Baja should definitely be on every fly fisher s bucket list. Before he discovered Baja Gary Bulla grew up on the beaches and waters of the Southern California coast. He found salt-water fly fishing combined his long-time love for the ocean and his passion for fly fishing with the convenience of having big fish right at his back door. He quickly realized that there was not a great deal of information out there about catching salt-water species on the fly and began to use his knowledge of tides and tidal life to not only chase down surf perch, but also corbina, halibut, and sea bass. It seemed that there was a fishery right along the shores of Southern California that would provide a great recreation, with some awesome challenges for the flyfishers of the area who were having to commit to a long weekend in the Eastern Sierras or elsewhere to cast a line. (5

6 California corbina were the most interesting challenge. They were visible in the surf line-and a difficult challenge to the flyfisher. Perfect! Over the next few years, he spent his early mornings and evenings patrolling the beaches, trying to develop presentations and flies that could bring to hand the corbina on a more consistent basis. He began guiding others and holding seminars on surf fishing. He also began cruising the kelp beds in his kayak, and developing flies that would attract the many varieties of fish found on the So. Calif. Coast. Then in 1989, and for 18 years afterwards, he began accompanying his wife Theresa, a teacher, on trips with her middle school children to camp at Baja s Magdalena Island to experience the gray whales and their young. He brought a fly rod and he was astounded at the incredible variety of fish that were available in the waters of Baja. Thus began more years of experimentation that have led to his being one of the most active fly fishing guides for Baja waters and one of the more knowledgeable salt-water fly-fishers. His trips are single occupancy and totally catered for groups of 7 to 11 anglers between April and September during the flyfishing season for Baja. He has a highly trained family of captains he has fished with since All of the boats have been adapted for flyfishing. He has landed over 160 species of fish in the salt on the fly, including a California Yellowtail of 34.7 pounds on 16 pound test that broke a 43 year old world record. He spends several months a year hosting fly fishing trips blue water panga trips at Punta Arena/Cerralvo Island (in the Sea of Cortez). He also guides kayak fly fishing expeditions each year to Magdalena Island and Bay. He has hosted several trips to Belize. He has photographed and fished the Bahamas, Florida, the Outer Banks in North Carolina, freshwater rivers all over the USA and British Columbia. In 2016 he hosted his first mothership trip deep into northern Brazil for Peacock Bass. And speaking of bucket lists, Gary will take us to his newest affordable destination in the heart of the Amazon of northern Brazil, where he and his crew caught many varieties of fish, including peacock bass on the fly and other strange creatures of the largest water system in the world. This mothership trip is an amazing adventure not to be missed! There are over two thousand species of fish there! He will share some off the incredible beauty, people and fish with us also. Back at home he ties flies, presents programs, writes articles, teaches casting and surf fishing clinics. His photos have appeared in Southwest Flyfishing, The Drake, Fly Rod and Reel, Patagonia catalog and more. His latest article is Surf Fishing Santa Barbara in Southwest Flyfisher Magazine Jan/Feb Please join us! (6

11 Greetings SLFF Perch Fishers PerchLine Andy Malavos Just to let you know amidst our furious, tumultuous weather this month, we are keeping an eye out for good weather and good surf conditions for club outings. During winter, Barred Surf Perch (BSP) can be very active and provide great fishing. However these fishing windows can only last a few days before weather closes the door. Mid-week or weekend, they are illusive. Early morning low tides can be good. Keep a tide book in your car. We will put out E-Blasts to advise. Keep your gear ready in your vehicle or garage bagged for a hot bite! This time of year BSPs like to hang around structure like rock formations to avoid rough water. Equipment wise: 8-9 wt. rods, checkerboard flys, or red/orange flys size4-6, type 6 sinking lines, stripping baskets, Personal Flotation Devices and chest waders. Lots of territory to watch for groups of conventional spin fishermen casting away on local beaches, or fly fishers undoing knots in their lines and let us know.
