1 Tight Lines Mar San Luis Obispo, CA Greg & Mary Lugo, Editors PRESIDENT S LETTER Lew Leichter March 2017 John Gierach: Sometimes when two fishermen have both discovered something that s under the radar of most other anglers they ll exchange that wave that s polite enough but still somehow manages to say you son of a bitch. There s a kind of absurdity to all this that keeps it from getting too serious. I mean here are two strangers with fly rods, both wondering which of them is the intruder, and both desperate to keep a secret no one really wants to know. NEW MEMBERS: Let s welcome our newest members Louis Lefebvre, Patty Maechtle and Tom Nugent. 2 BANQUET UPDATE We are really looking forward to Angela and Duncan Stewart from Stewart s Lodge joining us and being our guest speakers. Their program will cover the history of West Chilcotin B.C. including their families history with their lodge, fly fishing and other numerous opportunities that are available for outdoors enthusiasts in the area. Our silent auction will feature numerous guide trips including a 3 night 2 day stay with guided fishing at the Soaring Eagle Lodge on the San Juan River, a chance to bid on an Outcast Pontoon Boat and a lot of great gear. Don t forget our Special-Order table if you re in the market for some specific gear, clothing, etc. Your member contributions are always popular and WE HOPE YOU WILL CONSIDER DONATING THIS YEAR. (see below for info on contributing) If for some reason you can t attend please support your club by purchasing and mailing in the $25 in raffle tickets you received with your invitation. You need not be at the banquet to win and the banquet raffle will include among other things a couple of pack rod outfits, Sage rod cases, fly lines, stripping baskets, dry bags, etc. Don t Forget to Send in Your Annual Banquet Reservation RSVP Saturday, March 25 th at the Madonna Inn Lunch will be served a choice of three different entrees for $32 per person. There will be a no-host bar, raffle and silent auction. Reservations must be made by March 11th. No lunch tickets sold at the door. For all of us who have rod/reel, it will be helpful if you can gear up at home or just after arriving at the park so we lose no time. Please help those new to the sport set up their rods. The casting sessions are for club members only at NO charge. The Casting Clinics are given exclusively by our IFFF Certified Casting Instructors. We offer the sessions to each experience level group, from beginner to the advanced plus caster. For over fifteen years we have been reaching out to members of all casting levels. Many of you answered the call and greatly benefited from this program, became a more complete caster and a more productive fly fisher. For others there is still more work to do. Don t miss this opportunity to progress with your learning journey and extend what you started to reach your goal. This year we have an unusually high number of new members. Like we have in the past, we are reaching out to you with the casting program. Maybe you know from past experience, casting is the most important part of fly fishing and the first thing you have to work on in your fly fishing journey. No matter if you are new to the sport or a more experienced fly fisher, we encourage you to take advantage of our casting sessions to begin or to further improve your casting skills. 7 Attention Fly Tiers Come Join Us New Day New Room Date: Tuesday March 28 th Place: Odd Fellows Hall Time: 6:30 PM March Fly - to be announced Last month s Fly Tying session the Muddler Minnow The last fly tying session was held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday, February 28th. Jim Snodgrass demonstrated the Muddler Minnow. An important technique that was learned in tying this fly was the spinning of deer hair, which Jim demonstrated. Once this technique is mastered, it can be used in the tying of any number of flies. After this fly tying session, the Muddler Minnow is bound to be a go-to fly in the fly boxes.
