Tight Lines Dec San Luis Obispo, CA Greg & Mary Lugo, Editors PRESIDENT S LETTER Lew Leichter December 2015 John Gierach: The first time you hit a good hatch you wish it was like this every day; but soon you begin to see that it can't be and probably shouldn't be. If there were much more than an outside chance of success you would quickly become bored with fishing and start playing the stock market. In the long run fishing usually amounts to a lifetime of pratfalls punctuated by rare moments of perfection. On the best day of fishing you will ever have you still won't be able to catch them all. From our family to yours, Sylvia and I send our best wishes for a great holiday season and a happy and healthy New Year. DECEMBER MEETING: We will review the slate of candidates for election to the board and have a voice vote and review our financials. Michael Schweit prez of the Southwest Council of the IFFF will also pay us a visit. December s program will be our 6th Annual Year-in-Review show led by Mark Shelton. If you have any digital photos you d like to see in this show, please them to Mark at mshelton@calpoly.edu. This is an interactive program, so members can share their highlights of great trips with the club while watching the slides. Don t miss it! 2016 DUES RENEWAL: PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT AND PAY YOUR $35 DUES. We will not require a renewal application unless your contact info has changed. Mail your payment to SLFF PO BOX 166 SLO or bring to a meeting. REMEMBER TO PAY YOUR DUES BY 2/29, COME TO A MEETING, AND PICK UP YOUR SLFF HAT. (1

SLFF Tying Group Jim Snodgrass The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, December 3rd at 6:30pm. Tabou Caddis Emerger The next fly tying session will be held at the Odd Fellows Hall in San Luis Obispo on Thursday, December 3rd at 6:30. Tom Nickelson will demonstrate how to tie the Tabou Caddis Emerger, a very buggy-looking pattern. The fly was first developed in 2002 when tier Steve Schweitzer s began noticing that emerging caddis flies weren t neat little packages that fit a specific pattern. Thus the unkempt, buggy looking Tabou Caddis Emerger was developed. A video is available on line (address below) that shows Tim Flagler tying Steve Schweitzer s fly, on a size 14 Dai-Riki #270 hook. The larger hook size fits the feather choices used in the fly s construction. Watch the video at: emerger/?utm_source=midcurrent+fly+fishing+ +newsletter&utm_campaign=588a30e659- MidCurrent_July_23_2014&utm_medium= &utm_term=0_8efbf3b a30e Tom found this pattern on MidCurrent Fly Fishing News; he tied up a few; went to Yellowstone this fall; and found that the grayling at Cascade Lake loved the fly as you can tell by the picture on the left. The fly tiers have the opportunity to tie this buggy pattern in December. Materials: Thread Olive 6/0 Hook Hackle Ribbing 14 Dai-Riki #270 hooks or equivalent Chickabou Stretch round ribs-small, clear in color All materials will be supplied, but be sure and bring your own thread. Tom recommends Olive 6/0. (4

We have just upgraded the SLFF loaner kick-boat fleet. We now have two Outcast Fish Cat boats, including a brand new Fish Cat 4 deluxe, complete with fins and pump. To borrow contact Mike Powers. Kick boats must be thoroughly cleaned and dried and then deflated before putting in storage bags and returning. PRIVATE CASTING LESSONS AVAILABLE While our five IFFF certified casting instructors generously put on a series of free casting clinics for our club members each spring we wanted you to know they are available for private casting lessons throughout the year. If interested please contact them directly for additional information. 6 Pyramid Lake Outing by Tom Nickelson On November 3 & 4, Lew Leichter, Rich Chubon, and I fish with guide Chris Wharton at Pyramid Lake, Nevada. The mountains surrounding the lake were covered with fresh snow from a storm the day before. Temperatures ranged from the mid-thirties to the mid-forties with a persistent breeze. But we wore multiple layers and stayed warm for the most part. One exception was our hands which periodically got rather cold. The fishing was great. Chris took us to a site sheltered from the wind and we had fish on pretty much throughout each day. It was just a matter of waiting for a pod of fish to come by. Usually when one of us got a fish on, someone else would also get a fish within a short time. Our only problem was keeping them on the line. These guys put up a great fight and with barbless hooks landing them was a times problematic (I m thinking tube flies next year). We fished by wading and on ladders or stands. We didn t need to go out far, as the dropoff to deep water was close in. We caught about 6 fish each and lost about the same. Most fish were in the inch size range, although Rich caught one that was only about 14 inches and then two casts later caught a 6 pounder. Lew caught the unusual fish of the trip an endangered Cui-ui. It was a great outing. Come join us next fall. (6

The SLFF Board recently approved a donation to Central Coast Salmon Enhancement for a new Watershed Mural Wall. Watershed Mural Wall at the Watershed Education Center Central Coast Salmon Enhancement (CCSE) is poised to use its space as a community Watershed Education Center (WEC). We envision WEC to be a place where folks of all ages come to learn about the foundation of science that connects people to fish and watersheds. Recent response to our programming, including the Science for Girls summer camp and Tiny Explorers, reveal an opportunity: the chance to provide year- round programming at the WEC. This is greatly beneficial for Central Coast Salmon Enhancement because it fills a niche in our environmental education programming, a component outside the classroom that can be more agile and customizable for groups that are not typically served in a traditional classroom. The highlight and focal piece of the WEC is our watershed mural wall. This wall takes up almost one entire wall of our center and is the first thing you see as you walk in. It stands approximately eight feet tall and 19 feet wide. Yet, there is obviously a critical missing piece. The mural is designed to house various aquariums that show the matching habitat within the watershed. The first tank (1) would be full seawater and display species found along the California coast, such as seastars, kelp, sea urchins, and older Steelhead trout. The next aquarium (2) has brackish water and represents the estuary. It contains species such as eelgrass, oysters, and again, Steelhead trout. Moving further upstream, the next aquariums (3) would house our freshwater Steelhead trout. The final aquarium (4) could also hold younger Steelhead trout or even display invasive species of the area that negatively affect Steelhead. One of the difficulties of Steelhead trout education is illustrating how tightly intertwined the life cycle of these amazing fish are with the local environment, other species, and the places where we all live, play, work, and hang out. By having these tanks at WEC inhabited by the specific animals within the watershed, as well as them housing Steelhead trout, exhibits the diversity of interconnected life to all visitors. This mural wall would place Steelhead education at the forefront of all our programming here at the Watershed Education Center. Eventually, CCSE intends to open the WEC as a hands- on, interactive community museum where both locals and tourists can learn about the story of Steelhead trout and watersheds. This goal can only be achieved with a first step and this funding will build the WEC s foundational focal piece. (7

So, if you have a suggestion for a fly fishing outing, some place you have fished or maybe a different type of fishing venue, send it to me.
