Monthly Meeting Wednesday March 14th. Pyramid outing March 22-25th. President s Message Happy Valentineʼs Day. Yes, we scheduled our general meeting on Valentineʼs Day, (what were we thinking)? I would like to take this minute and say that CHIVALRY is still alive in the club. Hatʼs off to Pete Arnaudo, Eric Bailey, and Jay Jefferson, as these fine gentlemen brought their wives along for dinner. Good job guys! Guest speaker for February was long time member and friend, Tracy Da Silva, who gave a five star presentation that had every one on the edge of their seats as he entertained us with his 13 day self-guided Alaskan fishing trip. Tracy narrated the slide show of beautiful scenery, countless fish and hook-ups, techniques on catching different types of trout, brown bears in the blueberry patches, and eight solid days of rain along the way. One of my favorite photos was Tracy using his entire body to set the hook on a monster trout. Rumor has it that after catching hundreds of fish, his carpal tunnel in his wrists flared up; thatʼs a lot of hookups. Hoping one day soon Tracy will be able to come back and finish the Salmon segment of his By: Greg Smith presentation. Job well done! go off to Roger Caton, who was this monthʼs Fish Master for the outing at San Luis Reservoir. Roger and Loren had prefished Big Louie three previous times, the boys marked fish along with large schools of bait fish, and had a couple of takers. Loren reminded me of Al Miyamotoʼs favorite sayings when fishing was slow, that he was paying his dues. On the day of the fish outing we launched at Dinosaur Point in beautiful weather and yes a day to Pay our dues. Roger had the hot fly, Lee Haskins smelt pattern, and the lone fish of the day, and it was a beauty. Check out the photo on our Website. There was a very good turn out to tie the Zug Bug, one of the go to flies for trout, bass, and blue gill. As always, Bill Pshide brought all of the material for a room full of fly tiers and one photographer. Bill won our first fly tying raffle, a new pair of Adams scissors. Richard Higgins headed up to Reno to celebrate his anniversary, and was able to fish Pyramid one of the days. He weathered the wind(cont. page 3) PAGE 1

2 Fly Tyer s Corner with Bill Pshide This month s fly tying was rescheduled for March 7th. Pyramid Lake Flies (Prez. meassage cont.) and snow and got a couple of bumps. Not many fish but he says that he got lucky with the slots in Reno. A few of us made it to the Pleasanton Fly show last week. As always Jay Jefferson along with Richard Wilson found a couple of bargains. Jay will be wearing new hip waders, with Jack Clark finding some new waders from Patagonia. Rick tells me that he and his brother-in-law came down from Sutter Creek on Saturdays and managed to get past Dave Scaddenʼs booth without buying any new floatie toys. March is going to be a very busy month. There will be two speakers at our March general meeting. Jason Bachiero, Biologist from Hunter Liggett will give us an update on the various fishable ponds and the state of the military training at the fort. In addition, I will be doing a short presentation on Pyramid Lake. Please note that the next date for Fly Tying will be changed to March 7 th, and we will be tying the Midnight Cowboy, various Chironomids and a couple of Beetles. For those going to Pyramid Lake, take this opportunity to fill your fly box. This monthʼs outing will be at Pyramid Lake March 22 nd -25 th. The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribes' Reservation is located thirty five miles northeast of Reno, Nevada in a remote desert area located in the counties of Washoe, Lyon, and Storey. The area of the reservation contains 475,000 acres or square miles. Out of this acreage approximately 112,000 acres cover the surface of a terminal desert lake, Pyramid Lake. Pyramid Lake is approximately 27 miles long and 11 miles wide at its largest width. Pyramid Lake measures 350 feet at its deepest point, with a surface elevation of 3,397 feet above sea level (as of 2015). The perimeter of Pyramid Lake extends over 71 miles overall. Pyramid Lake is one of the most valuable assets of the Tribe and is entirely enclosed within the boundaries of the Reservation. PAGE 3

5 MARCH 2018 Editors Note More up coming events: The Board has been working hard coming up with things to keep us club members busy in the upcoming year. In addition to the Pyramid Lake outing sceduled this month, there will also be an outing to Nacimiento Lake for White Bass. This one requires and boat, but if you haven t fished for White Bass, it s well worth your time. The Club is adding it s support again this year to Kid s Day (April 14th.) at Fort Hunter- Liggett. This is a great event and conditions should be very good. For the newer folks in the club, this is an annual event. Fish and Game or whatever it s called now stocks Del Venturi pond with a bunch of nice sized Rainbows. It s kids only for the first half of the day with snacks and goodies. It s a very neat event for the young ones. One of the side benefits is that after all those pesky kids live the pond, the grown-ups can all put their pontoon boats in and try their luck for some of those chunky fish. In most years there will be 2-3 weeks of pretty good trout fishing after the day of the actual event. Also in April on the weekend of the 20-22nd is a Outing to Lake Orville. I don t have any further info. on that one. The Board will have their annual retreat in May, but this is a great time to start hitting Fort Hunter-Liggett of bass abd bluegill. In June on Father s Day weekend Dave Gambetta is scheduled a bunch to the Delta for some Stiper fishing. It s not on the schedule, but this is also prime time for Frenchman Lake and Davis. Some of the guys will also be hitting the Shad and the American and Sacramento Rivers come the first of June. Now come the month of July, don t forget the annual Muddy River Classic on the 14th. While you re planning, don t forget Lake Almanor. I know we didn t have a fish filled outing there last year, but it remains a great trout catching distination. When August roles around, you can look forward to the Surf Perch outing. Lastly, Dave will again, this year, lead everyone who wants to go on trek through the Northern California Lakes. Mr. Magoo s wild ride will start on October 1st and end up back in Salinas on or about the 7th.! I hope that everybody out there will take the time to put all these outings on there calendar and plan to join in on a fabulous 2018 fishing year. Go Fish--- Rick (ed.)
