1 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. At this time, I would like to thank all of you donors, fly tyers, and board members for all your hard work. Without you, there would be no banquet, and you make it all worth it. I would like to especially thank Mike Sevon, who always puts his best foot forward and has gotten the tickets and posters ready to go to the merchants who post them for us. And while I'm in a thanking mood, I'd like to give a shout-out to Jan Nemec for giving us an informative presentation at the last meeting. I'd also like to express a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers who helped teach the kids how to tie flies at the Sheep Show. Your help is greatly appreciated. Also a big thank you to Tom, he did the scheduling and made arrangements for the club to participate. I'm hearing fishing has really picked up at Pyramid. Fish are moving into the shallows at North Nets, and Crosby's had a 24 pounder checked in, caught at Blockhouse. Mike O'Brien's first fly tying round table will be March 15th, a Thursday due to a conflicting event at NDOW. Bring two flies for a raffle ticket, and come on in!! Tight lines and have fun out there, and if you can, call a friend or fellow member to go out too, you might just learn something! Biography: Jeff Putnam s Fly Fishing Schools At eleven years of age Jeff traded in his spinning rod for his first fly fishing outfit and started fishing many trout-filled streams in the Sierra Mountains. It was not long before fishing challenging gin-clear spring creeks, emerald green coastal steelhead rivers and fertile lakes all over the Western U.S. that Jeff realized fly fishing was more than just a sport. Jeff began fly tying commercially at 13 and started guiding fly fishermen on Northern California's waters as early as age 16. He is a F.F.F. Certified Casting Instructor; both CI. and THCI and was the 5 th individual to complete and pass the double handed certification test. Jeff has worked many positions in the industry including retail fly shop sales, manufactures rep, fly fishing guide for 17 years throughout California, Montana and Colorado. Jeff has also been fortunate to have traveled to some top fly fishing destinations around the world in search of the ultimate fly fishing experience including the Dean River for monster steelhead, Tsiu River in Alaska, tropics of Belize for tarpon and Christmas Island for bonefish. Jeff directs and hosts his self-titled series of instructional fly fishing videos DVD s, including the first 3D Blu-ray fly fishing video. He provides seminars and presentations for fly fishing expos, fly fishing clubs, fly shops, fly fishing manufacturers and corporate groups. Jeff consults with many fly fishing equipment manufactures as a field tester and prostaff member. He runs one of the largest Northern California fly fishing schools and assists individuals and groups on fly fishing travel and outfitting. Jeff enjoys fishing local waters for any fish species he can catch on a fly rod and possesses a true angling passion for steelhead on a spey rod, matching the hatch for spring creek trout and searching the saltwater flats. Elliott has given up his life time sport of fly fishing. His legs just don t want to carry the load any longer; we all come to that stage of our life cycle. Elliott has been a long time member of our club and has received many of the clubs awards; foremost among them is the Cal Bird Cup. For years Elliott headed up and scheduled tyers for the Roundtables, he has tied and donated hundreds of flies to our raffles and banquets. He was a monthly contributor to the newsletter with articles on flies and fishing. The rivers, the lakes and the club are all going to miss him. Now, he has donated a lot of things he is no longer able to use to the Truckee River Flyfishers, fly tying materials chief among them, you will see a lot of the materials in our monthly raffles, we donated some in turn to NDOW. Other items you will see at our banquet, waders, fly rods and reels, chest waders, hip boots, vest and hundreds of flies.

3 Page 3 HOLY GRAIL This highly versatile pattern is designed to be effective in both streams as well as stillwater. Although originally tied as a caddis emerger this buggy fly seems to imitate almost any natural nymph. The Holy Grail can be tied using various colored materials to match the insects in the water you re fishing. The pattern featured here happens to be the most versatile and the most common. HOOK: TMC 2457, Size THREAD: UTC Red, Size 8/0 BEAD: Brass Gold, Size 7/64 BODY: HareLine Dubbing, Natural Hares Ear RIB: Pearl Tinsel, Size Small THORAX: HareLine Dubbing, Natural Hares Ear WINGCASE: Pheasant Tail, Natural COLLAR: Hungarian Partridge 1. With bead on the hook attach thread 2 bead lengths behind hook eye. 2. Create a thread base rearward well into the bend of the hook. 3. Attach tinsel at hook bend. 4. Dub a thick tapered body forward to the thorax area. 5. Counter wrap tinsel forward, approximately 4 5 open wraps, and secure to hook shank in front of body. (Remove excess) 6. Attach approximately pheasant tail fibers by the tips to the top of hook shank just in front of body. (Do not remove excess) 7. Dub a bulky thorax forward to the spot you first attached thread to the hook shank. 8. Slide bead rearward against the thorax and bring thread forward over the center of the bead then make several wraps around hook shank to secure bead. 9. Bring pheasant tail fibers forward over thorax and bead. (Secure and remove excess) 10. Prepare a partridge feather and attach in front of pheasant tail fibers. Wrap partridge feather forward, approximately 2 wraps. (Secure and remove excess) 11. Create a neat thread head and whip finish. I ve had great success casting this fly using a floating line and letting it sink slowly over drop offs or weed bed edges then slowly retrieving it back. Mike O Brien

4 Page 4. Wild Sheep Foundation (Sheep Show) FLY TYING ROUNDTABLE IMPORTANT NOTICE: The roundtable scheduled for February 14 th has been rescheduled. Due to the fact that this date is Valentine s Day, a lot of club members will be spending it with their loved ones. We tried to reschedule for the night before or the night after but was unsuccessful due to the availability of the NDOW meeting room. The new date for our next roundtable will be Thursday March 15 th. This will be our first roundtable of the New Year and should be a great one. Our guest tier will be long time club member and recipient of the Cal Bird Cup, Richard Dickerson. Richard is a native Nevadan who has been fly fishing the west for 50 years. Twenty plus years ago he began writing about fly fishing and fly tying. His articles have appeared in Fly Fishing, Western Fly Fishing, California Fly Fisher, Salmon Trout Steel Header and other magazines. He is the author of Nevada Angler s Guide Fish Tails in the Sagebrush. After retiring from the US Air Force, Richard worked as a fly fishing guide and fly tying instructor with the Reno Fly Shop. He also taught beginning fly fishing classes for women in the Reno- Sparks area. 5 Page 5 Prospects for February 2018 By Wes Ong Board of Directors & TRF Officers Pyramid Lake: Last year at this time the lake was closed and we were not catching a thing, seems that this year it hasn t changed but the lake is open. February generally starts the beginning of pre-spawn activity and the catching improves. Dago and Howard should fish well but access is by boat only. Nets area should also pickup, some of the guides are already taking clients there. Hinkson Slough: Floating line with a sheep bugger, zebra midge, swallow, or a midge of gray with red wire is a good searching set-up. Last year NDOW did not put many fish in, maybe this year it will be different. North Pond: This could be good if there are no fish biting at Hinkson Slough. May not be as crowded as Hinkson Slough. Last year it was very muddy during opener but last year is when we had all the rain and snow. American River: Last week I was in Sacramento and went over the river and it was in good shape. Traditional steelhead type water with swinging flies and indicator nymphing. Amador: Pay to fish Foothill Lake near Ione, CA, this is generally a good winter fishery for rainbows that are bigger than 16 inchers. I heard that they do inspect all water craft. Daily cost to fish is $9 per person. Truckee River: Lower river will see some good dry action this month with the overcast or weather a big help in driving a hatch of Beatis. Flows are down and the river is in great shape, just cold. Sparks to Glenshire with the majority of fish on the Nevada side. I believe that the river above Trout Creek in Truckee is closed. Little Truckee: Still accessible due to the low snow fall this year, it was running a little high but has recently dropped to very fishable levels. There are still a few die hards that are fishing and are doing ok. East Walker River: No ice on edges, flows have recently come down to the 40cfs range, this is where I use to spend my super bowl Sunday with very little competition! Topaz Lake: Went here last year when Pyramid was closed and did well. Launched at the county park boat ramp and stayed in that end of the lake. Going down there soon before this warm weather ends and winter returns. Ruby Marsh: All the local wisdom is the marsh fishes best for trout in the winter. With the mild conditions this winter the Collection Ditch is probably ice free. Wind helps as the water is very clear and they can see you and your line. Some big fish can be hooked this time of year. A 7 pounder would not be uncommon. Delta: Dave N. was down there last week and did good with about 12 fish a day from 16 to 20 inches. I think he was in the Mokelumne part of the delta. This is also the time to fish Discovery Bay and maybe O Neil forebay.
