1 TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. Hopefully, the predicted forecast of a wet winter will come true and our rivers, lakes, and reservoirs will fill up again. At the October meeting we were treated to a very informative presentation by Mat Sinclair, Danielle Williams, and the famous Dr. Zeb Hogan of the National Geographic Monster Fish series. Their presentation was about the nationally acclaimed Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum (The Discovery ), which is based in Reno. A large traveling display of Zeb s work is going to be on display for about 6 months, and I am proud to say that the Truckee River Flyfishers who were in attendance, apx. 60 members, unanimously voted to provide a very nice donation, $2000, to the Museum to support this display. Moving forward we are looking for a great relationship with them. On October 4th the TRF held our annual BBQ at Pyramid Lake. We had a very good turnout and had a great time sharing fish stories. The TRF would like to thank Judy Crosby and Crosby s Lodge for preparing the food and providing the room for us. At Pyramid Lake the surface water temps are still a bit too warm for the trout at 63 degrees. With the cooler days ahead and the cooling water, the fish should start coming into shallower water and getting closer to the shore for the fly fisherman. The fishing should get much better towards the end of the month. Check out Wes Ong s Fishing Prospects for more info on other Nevada and California fisheries. Remember the Fly Tying Roundtable. 2 The Anglers The Angler s Line Line Page Page 22 Fly Tiers Roundtable By Mike Hoffman The Roundtable meeting on 10/14/15 was one of our best gathering in recent months! Our guest tier Mike Sevon did a great job tying two of his hot Pyramid bugs. In addition Mike took the time to show us the way he fishes these Jigs/Streamers and how he sets up his leaders and lines to go after those Cutthroat in the deeper waters. Great job Mike! I would also like to thank Joe Cendagorda, Bill Morgan and Stu Chandler for all their help in setting up and running this program also to Tillie for a super group photo. The November meeting will be held on Thursday 11/12/15 at 6:30 P.M. in the NDOW meeting room. Due to NDOW scheduling changes this month s meeting will not be held on Wednesday the 11th. Our guest tier for November will be Bud Johnson. Bud is an excellent tier and has been in the club for decades. Keep a tight line Mike Fly Tiers Roundtable for November 12, 2015 Bud Johnson is our guest tier for the upcoming Roundtable. Bud will demonstrate ways to create multi-colored fly bodies by weaving, knotting and stitching with the use of various materials, multi-stranded and solid. If you have questions on what to bring give a Bud at call at We are going try a new event at the November meeting, a Roundtable Fly Raffle. Here is how it works! Each member brings two of his favorite flies to the meeting, those flies will be placed in two fly boxes at which time the member receives a raffle ticket for flies received. At the end of the Roundtable we will raffle off the two fly boxes. You do have to put two flies in to get a raffle ticket but it is OK to put more than two to get a ticket. 4 P The Angler s Line Page 4 November 2015 Prospects By Wes Ong Truckee River: Flows are at a trickle, give the fish a rest until next Spring. California side is getting a lot of pressure. Little Truckee: The pressure has subsided here and it is a good time to fish. Beatis hatches mid day and a good time to swing a soft hackle thru some of the tail outs. Small Brassie fished near the bottom is always a good choice. Flows should stay in the 45 cfs range Lake Davis: This month fish should be in the lower end of the lake, not that there has been a consistent bite at the top end. October was unusually tough after the middle of the month and fish have been feeding on daphnia and #20 scuds. Water clarity should improve and fish should be taking any pattern that looks like food. There are lots of big fish. Be careful where you drive on the lake bed, there are some soft spots! Coots muddy up the shallower bays. Frenchman Res: Catch rates should improve shortly. (and have see last line). Cinnamon Wiggle Tails, large zebra midges, and red Copper Johns all produce. Getting to the water is an issue but that means with the ramp closed the trollers have not been harvesting! Pyramid Lake: The lake generally turns over this month and the fishing could be tough. Most fall fishing occurs at the north end of the lake. Tubing in twenty feet of water in Warrior Bay produced good numbers last month, not that I recommend tubing in Pyramid. Bait should disappear when the lake turns over and then the fishing should improve. East Walker River: Flows have been low so that a low profile approach is necessary. Good streamer fishing should still be happening. In the lower water use a small size streamer and instead of a sink tip use a floating line with a little weight in the fly itself. It may be time to leave this one alone also. Eagle Lake: This is a good place for information on Eagle Lake. The water is way down. Indian Creek Res. Good time to hit this one because it is a low elevation lake and will fish well late in the season Delta: Lots of small striper with a few bigger fish to be had. Look for bigger fish to appear this month. Largemouth fishing has been good all fall, smallies in the upper delta. Sleeper: Collection Ditch of the Ruby Marsh. Knot Creek (closes Nov. 15) Wes sent me a note saying he caught 8 fish in 3.5 hours at Frenchman s fishing from the shore this past week. Don t always need your tube or a boat. Tom

5 Page 5 Gierach Wooly Bugger This is John Gierach s version of a mostly weed less Wooly Bugger. The palmered hackle over the length of the body is about the only thing similar to the most popular and widely used Wooly Bugger pattern. Lacking the bushy marabou tail, this pattern has a down wing tied in the same as a traditional streamer. Since this fly is inverted you can fish it very well on or near the bottom of streams or your favorite still water. This resembles large nymphs, bait fish and drowning terrestrial insects. HOOK: TMC 200 Size 12 6 THREAD: Black 8/0 WIRE: Lead.025 HACKLE: Black Saddle hackle BODY: Black rabbit dubbing WING: Black buck tail, Black marabou and Peacock herl 1. Tie in thread and create a thread base, tie in wire to the top and length of hook shank. 2. Tie in hackle by tip, dub a slim body then palmer hackle forward. 3. Reverse hook in vise. 4 Tie in buck tail, sparse, extending tips just beyond hook bend. 5. Tie in marabou, same length of buck tail. Blood quill tips work well here. 6. Tie in 4 or 5 peacock herl, same length of buck tail. Finish head of fly. Try this pattern in various colors. Good Luck Mike O Brien

7 Bill Forward, with well over 60 years experience fishing in the Sierra, is a full time resident and fly fishing guide in the moving and stillwaters near Graeagle, CA. As a former award winning biology and physiology instructor, Bill merges his 32 years of classroom and university teaching experience with his passion/expertise of fly fishing, and has been a featured speaker at the International Sportsman s Expo in Sacramento as well as presented numerous programs at the Fly Fishing Show in Pasadena and Pleasanton. Predominantly dealing with the technical aspects of fly fishing, Bill has over twenty-five articles on the subject in print to date. Six years ago Bill s enthusiasm for fly fishing stillwater lead to a partnership with TV s host of the New Fly Fisher, Phil Rowley in their co-development of the California Stillwater School of Fly Fishing. Bill is currently Sr. Editor of Sierra Fisherman Magazine. At our November 18 th meeting Bill will be sharing his program Trout Vision and a Look at UV. The subject of trout vision has lent itself to a great deal of misunderstanding, conjecture and confusion as we will never really know what a trout actually sees. Nevertheless, touching upon the topics of the mechanics of light, trout optics, a trout s view (Snell s Window and background light space) and UV light, this program will clarify and arm you with the current knowledge and understanding to help you navigate through this subject that so directly effects your fly fishing success.
