1 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. This along with a High Sierra snow pack of15 to 25ft. there should be continued good flows for the next few years. January 2017 was one of the wettest Januarys ever recorded. As I mentioned last year, NDOW reported some very nice, big mature Browns and Rainbows. This should create the potential of a very productive spawn in The whitefish population is very low, but again, with water flows they will come back. Most of you have heard that because of safety issues, due to extensive flood damage to Hwy 446 and to several beaches, Pyramid Lake has been closed until April 1st, 2017, possibly longer. Check with websites at and for current information. Feb. 8th Mike Sevon will be tying at the Roundtable, check this newsletter for more info. At our February General Meeting, California guide Dan LeCount will be presenting one of his great shows. Look for his BIO in this newsletter. Our Annual Banquet is coming soon. The date will be March 12th and it will be held at the Tamarack Junction in South Reno. Mikey Wier will be our guest speaker. Mikey works for Cal Trout on native species including steelhead. He has a top drawer custom show lined up for us. We are planning another great raffle, if you have any raffle items please let us know. Thanks. 2 Page 2 Doug Ouellette s Pyramid Clinic The Angler s Line At our last BOD meeting, I asked Doug about the Pyramid Lake Clinic he had put on for the Carson Fly Fishing Club. He gave them a break and only charged them $100/each for a whole day of lecture, instruction and fishing. I asked Doug if he would do the same for our (his) club and he replied, Certainly. We settled on February 21st (it s a Tuesday following President s Day). Doug said that there will be 3 hours of Postponed classroom work (at until Crosby s) further followed by notice a trip to the due lake where everyone will get to tie up their own leader. Doug will then go over the fundamentals of the retrieve as well as the best flies to use. He will also cover indicator to the lake being closed. fishing. Cost will be $100/each. There will be extra rod set-ups for anyone that needs them. Doug is an extremely knowledgeable fisherman as well as very entertaining. It should turn out to be an excellent experience as well as learning a few new tips. You will also receive a booklet covering the instruction. Though these patterns are essential patterns for fishing saltwater, they also have great applications fishing our local rivers, lake and carp waters. The patterns he will be covering include: the Clouser Minnow, the Deceiver and the Christmas Island special. The Materials list for these patterns is listed below: 1.Clouser Minnow: Hook-TMC811-S, size2-4,thread-whiteutc 140 Ultra Thread, Eyes-Pseudo Eyes in nickel with yellow or red eyes, tail-,body, wing-white buck tail on top with chartreuse buck tail underside with some pearlescent Krystal Flash over the top 2.Lefty s Deceiver, white and green: Hook-TMC 800S or Gamakatsu: SC15-size 3/0,Thread- 210 UTC-white,Eyes-painted white with black pupils, tail-6 white hackles with pearl accent flash, body, wing: green bucktail top with a white bucktail bottom. Throat: red accent flash. 3. Christmas Island Special: Can be tied in orange, pink or yellow Hook-Mustad SS in sizes 8 to 4,Thread-UTC 140to match the color of the fly, Eyes-medium brass dumbbell eyes, tail-fluorescent orange crystal flash,,body- Fluorescent orange crystal flash,wing-tan craft fur. General Membership Meeting February 15, 2017 Dan LeCount is a fly fishing guide in the north Tahoe region, based out of Truckee, Ca. He has been fly fishing for over 25 years, and has worked in the industry for years. He works primarily as a guide, but also builds custom fly rods and is a contract fly designer for Umpqua Feather Merchants. In his spare time, he works on the board of Trout Unlimited, Chapter #103, the "Tahoe Trout Bums." He loves sight fishing for trout and bass, but will chase anything that will eat his flies. " Time to renew your membership, anyone that has not renewed by April 1, 2017 will be dropped from the list. Please get your membership renewed and mailed in.

Wild Sheep Show I am sending this out to as many s as I have for the volunteers for the Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience. If you know others that you lined up, which I might not have contact information for, please pass this one to them. The YWCE was a great success. Even with the weather, and some organizations not being able to make it on Thursday, or three schools canceling their field trip on Friday due to snow (we still had one school attend Friday with 99 kids), we gave a record amount of kids an experience this year. The final number of youth who participated in the three day event was 1249, up from the prior year s attendance of We also set a Saturday record, which was the day open to the public. We didn t get all the families registered, as it was so chaotic many times at the front doors that some families walked in without us being able to register them and count them. However, we did have 951 kids signed in on that day alone. Last year, we had about duck calls left out of the 600 ordered, and this year we ran out of all 600 by 1:00 on Saturday. Companion passes were also given out to a parent who brought a youth to the event. These could be exchanged for a day pass into the Sheep Show exhibit hall. We offered these to those who wished to check out the exhibit all. At the end of Saturday (the only day we handed them out) I called up the Companion Passes that were turned in to entry and it was 509! Our Tracks Program and expanded to include 9 organizations this year for an additional educational component for those year olds. Close to 150 youth turned in their Tracks Card completed and two of the winners were actually youth volunteers helping run the YWCE. It is great to see them be able to take break from running a station, complete the program and win. I haven t tallied all the data yet, but it appears the largest method of getting the word out about the event came from the top ones listed below: Facebook ad (I hired a company to develop and campaign and then pumped money into promoting it and it worked School flyers (I copied thousands and thousands of flyers, put into groups of 30, assembled into school groups, delivered to the Washoe County School District mailroom, who then distributed them to schools Past participants (many even saying it was their third year attending s (I out all part participants) TV (we had coverage on channel 2,4, and 11 this year) NDOW, Scouts, Carson Now, friend, internet, radio. Etc. were other sources listed I can t thank you, and those many others within your organizations, who made this event possible. There is no way something like this could ever be executed to this level without the dedication of the many volunteers, career seminars speakers, the many others that made this possible. THANK YOU! Without our club volunteers there would not be a fly tying event at the show. Every year we expose dozens of children to fly tying. It is surprising how many of them turn out a great fly on their first attempt and how many want to stay around and tie as long as we or their parents will let them. Tom Smith

4 Page 4 The Angler s Line Prospects for February 2017 By Wes Ong Pyramid Lake: Closed, and not expected to open until early April. Tribe is waiting on Federal money so if you want to do something your Senator or Congressman, I did! Hinkson Slough: Floating line with a sheep bugger, zebra midge, swallow, or a midge of gray with red wire is a good searching set-up. Also I heard that they have Tiger Trout in there now. Nevada license expires the end of this month. Release the Grass Carp unharmed, they are there for a reason. Unfortunately this is going to be the only game in town until April so expect it to be crowded! North Pond: This could be good if there are no fish biting at Hinkson Slough. This may not be as crowded as Hinkson Slough. American River: Last week I was in Sacramento and went over the river and it is way to high and colored, to turbid to fish. It may be awhile with all the storms coming through. Amador: Pays to fish Foothill Lake near Ione, CA, this is generally a good winter fishery for rainbows that are bigger than 16 inchers. Question is, is the water murky or is it clear enough to fly fish. Go to their web site and get a phone number and call. I heard that they do inspect all watercraft. Daily cost to fish is $9 per person. Truckee River: Lower river will see some good dry action this month with the overcast or weather a big help in driving a hatch of Beatis. Several questions arise here, are there any fish in the river East of town and is the flow so high it is affecting the hatch and fishing conditions. At this writing the flow was over 600 cfs but was clear. Little Truckee: couple of months, 38 cfs. Snowmobile need for access but flow has been consistent for the last East Walker River: During the cold weather in January the flows were around 58 cfs but of late they have risen to over 220 cfs. This makes it difficult to fish in low temperatures beside the fact that it is harder to wade. Topaz Lake: They are catching fish here, the lodge reported that last weekend 102 fish had been caught, or at least that s how many were reported to them. An internet post said that it was frozen over but some of my unconfirmed information says that it is not. Call the lodge or the marina and find out for sure before you drive down there. Ruby Marsh: All the local wisdom is the marsh fishes best for trout in the winter. With the really cold temps we had in December I doubt that there is much fishable water. Call the refuge headquarters or NDOW before even considering a trip out here. South Fork Reservoir is completely iced over so I assume that the marsh is also. O Neill Forebay: A recent report had the visibility at one foot, kind of tough to fish but this is the only striper water I can think of that would clear first. Others: Pleasant Valley Reservoir near Bishop, Baum Lake, Almanor. 5 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 5 STILLWATER NYMPH This easy to tie pattern was designed specifically for stillwater by Denny Rickards of southern Oregon. The Stillwater Nymph can be taken as a scud, damsel nymph, callebaetus nymph, leech or even a small minnow. Flies that imitate a variety of food forms let us concentrate on fishing rather than switching back and forth between five or six different patterns. HOOK: Mustad 3906B or your favorite 1X long nymph hook, Size THREAD: Brown 8/0 WEIGHT: Lead wire.015 TAIL: Marabou, Rootbeer BODY: Spirit River UV2 dubbing, Rust HACKLE: Saddle, Natural brown WINGCASE: Marabou, Rootbeer 1. Wrap 6 to 8 turns of lead wire near head of fly. Approximately 2 eye lengths from eye of the hook. 2. Attach thread and wrap a thread base over lead wire and hook shank back to the hook bend. 3. Attach a sparse clump of marabou on hook shank near the bend with tips extending approximately length of hook shank beyond bend of hook. (Do not remove excess) 4. Fold excess marabou rearward on top of tail and secure. (This will be the wing case) 5. Select a saddle hackle with barbs approximately one and a half lengths of the hook gap. Attach tip of saddle hackle near the base of the tail and secure. 6. Dub a slim slightly tapered body forward to just behind hook eye. 7. Palmer the hackle feather forward and secure behind hook eye. (Remove excess) 8. Pull marabou wing case forward over top of body and secure behind of hook eye. (Remove excess) 9. Build a smooth thread head and whip finish. 10. Trim off side barbs. (Optional) I ll be tying a bunch of color and size variations in preparation for spring. Mike O Brien
