It made it a bad month to hit the roads and fish. At last month s meeting, the fishing reports went quickly, as no one ventured out in to the storms to fish. We should have a very good spring fish with plenty of snow pack to carry the streams well into summer, so get your gear together. A few of the guys headed out to the Pleasanton Fly Show this year. Jay and Bill scoured the isles in search of future guest speakers, new techniques and any bargains to be had. Last word was that they were working on a guest speaker for May and had picked up a few items for the club raffles The February guest speaker was Jason Bachiero, a Biologist with Fort Hunter Liggett. Jason reported that all the ponds are full and most are spilling over. They plan to do an early plant of the ponds that dried up last year. A few ponds are accessible by wading, but for most of the ponds you ll need some sort of floaty thing to fish them. They re still ironing out the details for the Kids Fishing Derby on April 15 and we will keep by: Richard you posted as soon as we get more information. The Pyramid Lake outing for March is back on schedule! Currently, the only areas that are open are the North Nets to Shot Dog. Some areas have changed as drop-offs may have silted or pushed further out due to rising lake levels. It might be a little busy at the favorite areas, if the south end is not opened by the end of March. It sounds like it s a good year to hike a little and fish the areas that are rarely fished. If you are interested in attending the outing let us know and we will let you know about any open rooms or campsites. By the way, we did cancel the Pyramid outing for April The March meeting guest speaker will be our own Greg Smith. He ll be talking about Pyramid Lake in preparation for the outing. He will be sharing details about which areas to fish and what type of flies works in those areas, equipment typically used, Tribal laws and accommodations in the area. If you are going, or you are interested in going, come by and grab a chair and ask any questions you might have. For Fly tying this month, Bill will be presenting (cont. on page 3)

The Salinas Airport is our home for Fly Tying. Come join us for a real treat: Make it your New Years resolution to take the next step into the sport of fly fishing by learning how to tie your own flies. Bill Pshide continues to be Professor in Charge and does a great job of demonstrating how to tie a wide variety of flies. No materials or equipment are needed. Everyone is welcome. Why a Balanced Leech? Hanging or suspending flies beneath a strike indicator is nothing new nowadays. The catatonic presentation technique is a staple in just about every stillwater fly fishers arsenal. Beginning with chironomid pupa and larva patterns just about every stillwater prey item can be suggested beneath an indicator. The method has become increasingly popular for leech patterns, early spring and late fall in particular. Tying horizontally balanced flies is no more difficult than any other fly pattern. The trick is in getting the fly to hang in a horizontal manner. The key lies in extending the hook shank and applying a weight in front of the hook to obtain balance. Shank extension is simple. A common straight pin with a large pinhead loaded with a brass or tungsten bead. Be sure to slide the narrow taper of the bead toward the pinhead. Trim the pin so it is about 1/8 of an inch shorter than the hook shank. Woolly Bugger and leech patterns featuring long marabou tails use half shank length pins to avoid building up bulk when tying in the tail and body materials. Depending upon the pattern fine wire hooks may be necessary to ensure that the combined hook shank and pin shaft areas does not bulk up the fly. As balanced flies fly ride point up remember to use down eye hooks so the fly can be knotted onto the tippet. As an added bonus balanced flies are practically snag free.

4 Places to go this season Directions: From Meyers, at Junction of Highways 50-89, take Highway 89 South and go 11 miles to junction with Highway 88. Turn West and go 2.5 miles on Highway 88 to Blue Lakes Road. Turn South and go 12 miles to Lower Blue Lake. Road turns North, 2 miles more to Upper Blue Lake. Notes: Upper and Lower Blue Lake are two reservoirs made by PG&E by damming Blue Creek within the Sierra high country at 8,200 feet. Both lakes are well stocked with about 20,000 Rainbows annually. Upper Blue Lake also gets 20,000 Lahonton Cutthroat fingerlings each year. Brookies are present in each lake as well. Each are deep lakes with boat ramps and a sizeable crowd trolling for trout. Float tubing opportunities are best with Upper Blue Lake that provides some shallower shorelines. On Lower Blue Lake, try fishing the rock wall in the evenings with a Parachute Adams or Elk Hair Caddis # Charity Valley Creek: 6 miles south along Blue Lakes Road from Hwy 88. Trailhead to Burnside Lake. Contains Brookies. Twin Lake: From the trailhead at Lower Blue Lake, Twin Lake (elev: 8170 feet) is a 2 mile hike. It contains Lahontan Cutthroats and Brookies. Evergreen Lake: From the trailhead at Lower Blue Lake, Evergreen Lake (elev: 8450 feet) is a 3 mile hike. Stocked in 2013 with Lahontan Cutthroats. Tamarack Lake: Tamarack Lake (elev: 7871 feet) about one mile off Blue Lakes Road. Contains Lahontan Cutthroats. Sunset Lakes : Sunset Lakes (elev: 7863 feet) about two mile from Tamarack Lake, a dirt road available requiring high clearance. Contains Lahontan Cutthroats and Brookies. Wet Meadows Reservoir : This reservoir is drained annually and not stocked with fish. Raymond Lake: Raymond (ele: 9,100 feet) is about 4 miles beyond Upper Kinney Lake on the Pacific Crest Trail. The lake contains Goldens and Lahontan Cutthroats. Ice-out is usually around mid-july and is best time to fish these waters since the larger Goldens will move into the shallows to feed.
