1 Wichita, Kansas Volume 11 Issue 9 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Presidents Line September, 2006 Event Calendar Page 2 Upcoming and Past Events Page 3 Tying with Bill Page 4 Dear Fellow Club Members At the August meeting, we did not get any volunteers for the Big Brothers fishing clinic. The club needs to do these service projects. The date is now scheduled for September 9 th. We will need several volunteers to help with this program. We have been asked to help with a scouting program in October. More information will be available at a later date on this project. The board has started planning the fall picnic and the winter program. The fall picnic will be after trout season starts and will be at Sedgwick County Park. I was disappointed with the turnout for the August meeting. The program was informative and entertaining on the big game fish to be caught in Kansas and some flies that are productive. 3 3 Upcoming Events September Program Don t forget your flies for the FLYSWAP The September fly swap will be Lake Taneycomo Flies. September 2006 will be the club fly swap. We encourage all members to participate so we have well-rounded examples of flies. Dwan Welty Stan and Carolyn Parker Owners of River Run Outfitters Stan and I have both been fly fishing since the mid 60s. We started right here on Taneycomo. Before we retired in 1997, Stan was guiding part-time on Taneycomo. Between 1997, when we retired, and 1999, when we opened our shop, we traveled to many good fishing spots and visited many fly fishing shops throughout the U.S. We then decided we wanted to open a nice fly shop on our home water, Taneycomo. Upon opening the shop, we both started guiding on a regular basis. In May of 2000, I attended Joan Wulff s Casting Instructors School in Livingston Manor, NY. We both love the sport with a passion and spend our spare time when not working the shop or guiding, on the water fishing together. Carolyn Parker Paul Capt Sodie Sodamann from the August Meeting The article I use and modified for the leaders came from Saltwater Flyfishing, April/May issue Craig is in the process of writing an article dealing with the leaders and the way I specifically make them. The article should show up in a future American Angler, I will try to keep you posted as to the issue when it comes out. Craig and I went out for carp the day after the meeting and did very well. The carp in Milford lake are very active right now. I have attached a photo of one of the fish we landed an average fish for our normal outings. Capt. Sodie The club would like to welcome our new members Ron Devaney Bruce Chappell Jereniah Norwood Craig Professor Phillips

5 5 Lake Tanneycomo My wife s family likes to visit Branson every summer, this year we were there the third weekend in July. This weekend turned out to be the hottest weekend so far this summer. With the heat reaching three digits, the water on condition on Lake Taneycomo started earlier in the morning and by early afternoon all four generators were operating. Running all four generators made Lake Taneycomo difficult to wade fish, but I tried and had little success. Dwan Welty action my strike indicator had was when the jerk on the other end got impatient. Finally a lonely trout took pity and I had the first trout of the morning. As we continued to float the guide worked with Adam and soon Adam had his first rainbow trout. The first week in August I took my daughter, son-in-law, grandkids and wife for a four day stay in Branson. My goal was to fish and theirs to shop. Knowing that Lake Taneycomo would be difficult to wade fish I arranged a guided float trip with River Run Outfitters. My son-in-law, Adam, had never been fly-fishing so I thought a guided trip would be the best approach. We arrived at River Run Outfitters around 8 a.m. on Wednesday August 3 rd, got Adam his needed papers, met our guide and were on the water by 8:30. The guide, Jim Lund, is a retired police officer from Cadillac, MI. He guided on the Michigan rivers for about 20 years, guided with River Run Outfitters about 6 years and during his police career was an officer in Wichita. Around 10 a.m. they started one generator, the water got deeper and the current faster. The guide switch to a 5X tippet, #22 bead head sow bug (his design) with a #22 red san juan dropper, split shot 8-10 inches above the top fly and the strike indicator about 48 inches higher. This change proved successful because the strikes, catches and misses became abundant. We floated about 4 hours, anchored when we caught fish, and covered about 4 miles of Lake Taneycomo. The third weekend in September the wife, her brother and myself have planned a trip to Roaring River State Park. We are also thinking of returning to Lake Taneycomo and trying to have our own unguided float trip. River Run Outfitters provided all the equipment and refreshments. We used a 5-weight rod, 9 ft. 5X leader, 18" 6X tippet, #22 copper john and strike indicator 21" up. While Adam received fly-casting lessons from the guide, I fished. Practice was the name of the game for Adam, so we anchored for about 20 minutes, (I think the guide was seeing how hard he would have to work), then started the drifting. At first the copper john brought success to Adam but not to me. The problem was that Adam could not see the strike indicator move so he missed many a strike. While Adam was missing, the only The pictures are of Adam, the guide and some of the rainbows

6 6 Dad s Big Fish Curt Elder My two sons and I had planned a fishing trip to Roaring River State Park in Missouri a couple weeks ago before school started. At the last minute, my wife Kris wanted to come along to see what all of the fuss was about. So, we made it a family fishing trip. Since both of our sons are fairly new to fly fishing, and my wife has never fly fished, I didn t plan on having much time to myself on the water. However, one morning when my wife and youngest son Evan decided to spend some time at the pool, my oldest, Ian, and I found some action in the catch and release area where I caught the below 20 rainbow. Kris opted out on fishing for hiking, nature watching and reading, and both the boys caught fish. For Evan, the trip was especially memorable because he caught and released his first trout.
