May 2017 MISSION STATEMENT The Arizona Flycasters Club is a non-profit tax-exempt organization that is dedicated to encourage, support, and educate its members and the community in the sport of fly fishing, the techniques of fly fishing, and the ethics of catch and release which promotes the conservation of fish and their habitats. The organization s activities also encourage friendship, enjoyment, sportsmanship, and safety. President s Lines May is here, as is good fishing in the high country. Reports from the White Mountains and Mogollon Rim are that all roads are open, with good fishing at Becker, Carnero, Crescent, Woods Canyon, and Willow Springs Lakes, to name just a few. One myth of spring creek fishing is that you can t catch trout unless you precisely match the hatch. I know some very good anglers who carry only a few very simple patterns that catch a lot of fish. Their theory is that if you make a good presentation it doesn t much matter which fly you use. Just ask Brian Mazoyer at the next meeting for some of his favorite patterns, which he will have available. Remember our Big Lake trip is in June this year, and in August we ll be at Woods Canyon Lake for our Crawdad Festival. Sign up now. The fishing should be spectacular, it will be prime time to escape the Valley heat, and club members always have a great time at these annual outings. 3 Cole Glenn The San Juan Angler Fly Fishing Social Gathering Event Thursday, May 11, 7:00 PM Sunnyslope Community Center John Doss, Programs Chair Join us on May 11 at the Fly Fishing Social Gathering Event for Cole Glenn s presentation on the San Juan River and other prime waters in the Durango, Colorado area. Born and raised in Woodland Park, Colorado, Cole got his trout fishing education while growing up on a ranch with trout ponds and many gold medal rivers in the area. He relocated to Durango to attend Fort Lewis College and graduated with a degree in tourism resort management and spent some years working in the hospitality and resort industries. After attending a fly fishing guide school, he took a guide position at a shop, but soon became the general manager at The San Juan Angler, a full-service fly shop in Durango ( Cole likes to spend his off days exploring backcountry streams, hunting for trophy trout on the Los Pinos River, and testing his mettle on the mighty and challenging Animas River. Cole has a unique knowledge of the Southwest, as he has called Durango home the past 13 years. He demonstrates a deep passion for the sport of fly fishing and enjoys sharing his experiences with others. Brian and Barb Fayle Win The Bring A Buddy Raffle John Doss, Programs Chair Brian and Barb Fayle are the winners of the Bring A Buddy raffle. They are the recipients of a 2 for 1 trip with Wolf Creek Anglers in Colorado. Brad Shallenberger, owner of Wolf Creek Anglers, gave a great presentation and also donated a trip to support our community outreach partner Trout Unlimited and the Arizona Trout In The Classroom program. 4 General Education Class Wyoming Extravaganza II Pre-Trip Meeting Tuesday, May 16, 7:00 PM Sunnyslope Community Center Ron Robinson, Education Chair I would like to thank all the members who sent me get well wishes while I was recovering from heart surgery. I want to give a special thank you to Bob Sickles for all his help while I was away. I should be back to limited action soon. This month s education class will focus on how and when to add bling to your flies. We will review how these techniques have evolved over the years and give each student an opportunity to tie a few patterns for their next trip. The club will supply all materials and equipment for those in need. We also will talk about the upcoming Wyoming trip. All are welcome whether you are going on this trip, thinking about a future trip, or just want to hang out and socialize. Topics will include what to bring (clothing, cigars, etc.), rehash of last year s experience and what to expect, information on rods, leaders, tippet, flies, etc., and current conditions at Grey Reef and the Miracle Mile. Come on out and share in the pre-adventure. Please note that our formal casting classes have ended until cooler weather returns in the fall. You can still attend informal weekly casting meet-ups at Roadrunner Park every Wednesday at 9:00 AM. The meet-ups are good opportunities to get some one-on-one help as well as fly fishing information from other members. 4 Club Outings Phil Koda, Outings Chair Big Lake June 9-11 Our Big Lake outing is coming up June 9 through 11. Sites are being booked at Rainbow Campground. You can book your site online at reserveamerica.com. Big Lake is a great place for tent camping as well as rv's. We will try to gather in sites We are making the trip to Big Lake in June this year, hoping to beat the monsoon season! Woods Canyon Lake/Crawfish Festival August From August 25 through 27, we will be at Woods Canyon Lake on the Mogollon Rim for our annual Crawfish Festival. The club has reserved Crook Group Campground Loop B. For those planning on spending the weekend, there will be a $25 camping fee. If you can't make it for the entire weekend, this outing makes a great day trip, as Woods Canyon Lake is only two hours northeast of the Valley. If you choose to come up for the day, the fee is $5 per carload. Space is limited. RV and improved tent sites are available. Sites can be reserved online at Eventbrite or see me at a Fly Fishing Social Gathering Event. As part of our annual tradition, we'll harvest crawfish from the lake and make the "mud bugs" taste like a shrimp cocktail. What they do to the aquatic environment is the bad news the good news is that they are delicious! We will do our best to eliminate as many crawfish as possible and feast on the bounty! To get to the campground, take Highway 87 out of Phoenix to Payson. Turn right (east) on Highway 260 out of Payson. When you reach the top of the Mogollon Rim, turn left on Forest Road 300 at the Woods Canyon Lake turnoff. Follow Forest Road 300 about 3 miles until you reach Forest Road 105 (entrance to Woods Canyon Lake). Turn right and immediately turn right again into the Crook Group Campground.

Peacock Callibaetis Hook: 2XL nymph, size 10-14 (Mustad 9671, TMC 5262) Thread: 6/0 or 8/0, black or olive Tail/shuck: Mallard flank fibers, natural or dyed burnt orange Hackle: Grizzly dyed burnt

Place the debarbed hook in the vise and start the thread towards the back of the hook and wrap to the bend. 2. Tie in a small bunch of mallard flank fibers, making the tail about the length of the hook shank. Only make about four wraps of thread. Don t cut off the excess mallard. 3. Tie in the grizzly hackle by the butt section just in front of the tie-in point and under the remainder of the mallard. 4. Tie in the wire right in front of the grizzly hackle. 5. Now wrap the thread up the shank of the hook to about an eye s width away from the hook eye. 6. At this point tie in about six strands of peacock herl by the tips and wrap the thread over the peacock all the way back to the mallard. Wrap the peacock around the thread about three or four times to form a rope and wrap the rope towards the eye of the hook, putting one wrap right next to the other, and tying it off when you have reached just behind the hook eye. 7. Next counterwrap the wire with three or four open wraps. 8. Now take the grizzly hackle and palmer it in four open wraps, tying it off in front of the peacock. Trim the grizzly hackle off the top of the fly so there are only legs on the bottom of the fly. 9. Pull the mallard over the top of the body, tie it off, and trim the excess. 10. Form a small, tight thread head, whip finish, and the fly is complete. This fly is tied unweighted and is designed to be fished near the surface (usually top two feet of water) with a floating or intermediate line. It is considered a go to fly when fish are feeding near the surface in still water. You can retrieve the fly with short, slow pulls or let it sit. You can tie variations of the above recipe by using dyed mallard in different colors. 5
