1 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. Inside this issue: President s Letter Fly Tiers Round Table Prospects Discovery Museum Bloody Nymph Veteran s First Members Ship Upcoming Events: Jan 14, BOD Meeting, 6:00 President s letter January 2016 To all Truckee River Flyfishers - Happy New Year! With the new year comes more winter storms, bringing well needed water to help our watershed. The Truckee River looks to be in good shape after a year and a half of very low flows. The river is very resilient as are the fish and things should bounce back nicely. NDOW electroshocked last November with promising results. Remember that extreme water temperatures, whether they are very warm or very cold, will stress out the fish. Be cautious with the very cold, icy water not to put additional stress and pressure on the trout. The fish have gone through a tremendous hardship this last year, but I believe they will spawn successfully. This month Ken from Cabela s will be presenting a fascinating show on horse backing for Golden Trout in the High Sierras. This should be a very interesting show, don't miss this one! Our Annual Banquet is just around the corner. The guest speaker will be Joe Warren. Joe works in the state of Washington as a fisheries biologist. His show will cover the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout at Lake Omack in Washington. I am really looking forward to this presentation. See you at the January meeting, Doug O. 2 The Angler s Line Page 2 The Angler s Line By Mike Hoffman Fly Tiers Roundtable Well the New Year is upon us, hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and enjoyed your time with the family. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 2/10/16 at 6:30 pm at the NDOW meeting room on Valley Road. Keep an eye on your , the website or the newsletter for more info. We are still working on the guest tier but as soon as we have it set up we will get that info out to our members. Look forward to seeing you at the February meeting! Keep a tight line The Sheep Show Will be here next week at the Reno/Sparks convention center on South Virginia Street. Once again NDOW will be hosting a fly tying booth for the students that will be attending. The hours will be: January 21, 12:00 to 2:00 January 22, 12:15 to 2:30 January 23, 10:00 to 4:00 (Thursday) full (Friday) full (Saturday) still need help We are still looking for volunteers to assist the students in tying flies. Please look at your calendar and put at least one of these days down on yours. Please contact me if you can help. The more hands the better, we have a very popular booth and can have up to 20 students at a time tying. These are all beginners and need hands on assistance, the more hands the better. If you have already contacted me there is no need to do so again. I will get a schedule out next week to those who have already volunteered. Those who volunteer will be given a pass to the Sheep Show, it has booths for hunting and fishing, lots of wildlife art, silent auction and many other great things to do and see. This is a good opportunity to help the kids, NDOW and still see a great show. Tom Smith edsontiger@aol.com or

3 The Anglers Line Page 3 January 2016 Prospects Pyramid Lake: I think things have picked up since the weather has gotten cold and stormy. My personal catch rate has gone up with a more consistent indicator bite. If you are not tying balanced leeches, which have been all the rave, at the lake this fall. Just use a bigger midge pattern. It has been my experience that the fish will generally take a T-bone steak over a cocktail weinie! Just think, it is a size eight with an extended body and marabou tail, it s as big as a bugger or tadpole! Word of advice: change to a new leader or at least re-tie knots before each day of fishing. The chance of getting a big one this year is even greater this year than last. Most of us have gone from 2x leader to 1x or at least 12 pound test! Some are using 16 pound test. The Rivers: The place to fish is the slower water with finer tippets and smaller flies. It used to be, that on the East Walker, when the water was 34 degrees in the morning and warmed a few degrees in the afternoon a bite would start. It seems to me that the same should happen on the Truckee if the water conditions are stable. Look for baetis to hatch in the afternoons east of town, question is did any fish survive the low water of the summer. Better yet give the rivers a break and fish Pyramid. The more time on the water the better the chances of getting the big one!!!!! Topaz Lake: Opened New Years Day, you can fish it with your current Nevada License. Size 8 Purple Wooly Bugger up by where the West Walker dumps into the lake. It s a prospect, but I have yet to catch a fish here. Squaw Creek Res. This is where we normally go in January and it should fish well. There are good numbers of fish but it is a significant drive. Call NDOW for the current ice conditions because we have had a significant amount of really cold weather. Collection Ditch: Probably completely iced over this month. More open water should be fishable next month. American River: Steelhead fishing in this urban environment, it helps to be the first one on the water. Indicator nymphing with a #12 Olive Bird s Nest and a dropper with either an egg pattern or a salmon fry should work. Typical down and across with a sink tip and a steelhead pattern will also work. There is less angling pressure at Goethe Park, Gristmill or Watt Ave. Beware, vehicle break-ins are common, so don t leave anything in sight! Striper: My guide in Lodi has cancelled the rest of his bookings until the water warms. I expect the Spring fishing to be great after such a bad Fall! 4 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 4 d Hare Mike s Wired Hare This pattern is a variation of the well known Hare s Ear. It s very active in the water and there is no need for a brass bead since the wire body provides all the weight you need to fish this pattern effectively. The wire body also provides segmentation and durability. I tie this pattern in a variety of colors with dark olive, copper brown and black being my favorites. HOOK: Mustad 3906B, Size THREAD: Brown 8/0 TAIL: Natural hare s mask BODY: Copper Brown wire, Med. WINGCASE: Pearl tinsel, Large THORAX: Natural hare s mask 1. Tie in thread and create a thread base. 2. Tie in hare s mask, First remove and save fluff from guard hairs before tying in, tail should be length of hook shank. 3. Tie in wire and wrap to where the thorax will start, wrap your wire similar to the way you would a Copper John. 4. Tie in tinsel on top of hook shank. 5. Create a short dubbing loop and add the fluff you removed from the guard hairs. Make approximately 3 wraps and tie off. 6. Pull tinsel over thorax and tie off. Add epoxy for extra durability and flash. 7. Create a neat head and whip finish. The copper brown pattern is effective anytime of the year and specially when there are little stones or mayflies around. Mike O Brien
