Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Well, it seems summer is upon us! I hope Memorial Day was good for you, and you got your summer preps done. Mike O'Brien's Fly Tying Round Table will be the 13th of June, hope to see you there. Remember, bring two (or more) flies, they will get you a ticket for the drawing. We will have a Tech Night on the 20th. There will be plenty to see and learn, so make it a point to be there. At the meeting, we will hope to be able to schedule fishouts, so come to the meeting to get your suggestions in for good locations and dates. Many thanks to Mike Sevon for his excellent presentation on fishing for carp in Nevada. Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there (me included). Have a great day. If you have a favorite spot for fly fishing, how about giving it a share? And if you're tired of fishing alone, give another member a call. Remember to bring water on your fishing trips. 3 Page 3 Bread-N-Butter Nymph When you turn over rocks to see what bugs the trout may be eating, most of what you ll find will be little brown things with a few moving parts. The Bread-N-Butter nymph can imitate a wide variety of these bugs trout love to eat. This simple fly also resembles many other popular fly patterns. But, being a fly tier I have my own variations that I believe in, even more so than the original pattern. Such is the case with the Bread-N Butter nymph. HOOK: Umpqua U555 Jig, Size- #14 BEAD: Slotted Gold Tungsten, Size- 2.8mm THREAD: UTC Brown, Size- 70 Denier WEIGHT: Lead Free Wire, Size-.015 TAIL: Coq de Leon RIB: UTC Tinsel Oval Gold, Size- Small BODY: Hairline Dubbing, Krystal Dub Hares Ear THORAX: Arizona Synthetic Peacock, Bronze COLLAR: UTC Rusty Brown Thread, Size- 70 Denier 1. Attach bead and secure with lead free wire. (Approximately 6 wraps) 2. Attach thread to hook shank just behind wire and create a tapered thread body rearward to just above the barb. 3. Attach Cog de Leon with tips extending approximately a hook shank length beyond hook bend. (Secure and remove excess) 4. Attach and secure tinsel. 5. Apply dubbing and create a tapered body forward to thorax area. 6. Counter wrap tinsel forward, approximately 5 open turns. (Secure and remove excess) 7. Apply dubbing, Arizona Synthetic Peacock, and create a full thorax forward to bead. 8. Whip finish brown thread and remove. 9. Attach Rusty Brown thread behind bead and create a small collar. 10. Whip finish and remove. So why not add a few to your fly box and next time you re not quite sure what to tie on the end of your tippet, try a Bread-N-Butter nymph, it s on my list of confidence flies. Good Luck! 4 Page 4 JUNE 2018 PROSPECTS Pyramid Lake: The end and the beginning of the season are the time to get in a pontoon or float tube and hit some 20 to 30 foot water. Let your fly sink straight down and jig it slowly. This has been yielding some good numbers and a few double digit fish. The Rocks have produced some fish, you just have to stay above the algae. No one is fishing except the trollers and retired NDOW guys!! Truckee River: The river has been at decent flow for a couple of weeks and is dropping each day. California side looks good and is producing some decent numbers. Green Drakes come off first of June and I actually had a customer come in the store and describe a hatch he saw in the Glenshire area which fit its description. It lasted 15 minutes! Warmer weather should bring on the start of the evening yellow sally hatch and the caddis. Little Truckee: Water levels are a bit high for this time of year but the water should drop on the 15 th of this month after the official end of the Qui wui spawn at Pyramid. Still I was up there last Monday at 11 in the morning and there were eight rigs in the upper parking lot, none anywhere else. Do they ever give the water a rest!!! Knot Creek Reservoir: Opens the 9 th of this month and water condition should be good this year. Milton Res. This is a good time to fish a good ant fall here. Last year I started fishing a sinking line here, (I have always used just a floater here) and a small Swallow or Dave s emerger and my catch rate went way up! Also I did stick some fish over 15 inches which I have not done a quite a few years. Frenchman: Lake Davis: one. Catching has slowed here and catch rate this spring was disappointing. Forget it unless you want to bass fish. If you do hit a trout it will be a big Lake Almanor: Hex hatch here generally starts the 20 th of June should start on time. My suggestion is to stay on the nypmhs and when the hatch hit s the surface just go to a floating line with a nymph. Lots of smallies are in the mix. Wilson Sink: I have been pushing this lake for 4 years now and no one has fished it and come back with a report! At last! One of my fly tiers from my class at Cabela s went there on the 18 th of May. As reported, the road going in was awful and his truck and trailer were covered with mud as he used 4 wheel drive. Which means when it dries it will be really rough! Fishing was what he described as one of the Best trips ever! Lots of 18 to 20 inch heavy fish. Sonar had fish on it constantly. Duck Valley Indian Reservation: I have not heard much from here lately. They do have a web site with a current fishing report and all the lakes are full because they take all the water from Wildhorse to fill their lakes and do their irrigation. South Fork Res. Fished here on the 24 th of May and it was disappointing. I think that I was late again. Heard that it fished well in April and May. Drove the lake for two hours in the upper end (south end) and never marked a fish. I think the Fall is also going to be tough here. Go to Wild Horse. 5 Page 5 Pilot Peak egg planting summary We received a total of 390 ounces of Pilot Peak LCT eggs from the Lahontan Federal Hatchery just south of Gardnerville. At 47.2 eggs per ounce this works out to 18,422 eggs exactly, not 18,421 or 18,423, but 18,422. Just kidding, I tell everyone that biology is not an exact science. Anyway, with a loss of exactly 32 ounces that works out to an 8% loss or if you re a glass is half full person a 92% survival rate, which is very good. The eggs were taken on April 11, We picked them up as eyed eggs on April 21 (fish had started to develop in the shell and black dots could be seen, which, of course, were the fishes eyes) and planted them in the river. Mike and Keith pulled the boxes on May 21 (40 days in the river). People always ask me, What is the survival rate? It is low, but many the hardest survive to adulthood. In the wild, especially when you re small everything from invertebrates to larger fish to birds is trying to make a meal out of you. And the young will not remain in the area of hatch, but drift downstream or swim upstream to new digs (that s slang for a home). My thanks to the 15 volunteers that showed up to put the boxes in the river, Jimmy Greenhalgh for accompanying me to the hatchery and Mike and Keith for watching our babies and pulling the boxes. And let s not forget Marsha who helped me put the 100 boxes together. Great job all! Mark Warren PILOT PEAK LCT EGG PLANT 2018 Reprint from last month. The day, April 27 th, was warm and beautiful, although a little windy. Jimmy Greenhalgh and I were driving to the Lahontan Federal Fish Hatchery just outside of Gardnerville. It would good to get back to my roots my first job was at the Verdi Hatchery. We watched as the US FWS and hatchery crew picked the white eggs (dead) away from the pink ones prior to delivery. The hatchery manager asked me for my NDOW permit to introduce wildlife. I had picked up an envelope off the table that read NDOW Important Document. I opened it up to give him the permit and, lo and behold, it was my boat registration, which, coincidently was in an identical envelope back on the table at home. A moment of panic ensued, but a quick call to Marsha and, with the help of modern electronics, she was able to photograph the permit and send it to us. The day was saved. Otherwise the next day s paper would read, TRF Vice President found hanged from the Verdi Bridge. Arriving at River Bend, and only 20 minutes late, we found 15 anxious club members waiting to plant the eggs. We got Laura Murph started putting the eggs into individual boxes and into the crates (12 boxes to a crate). These were then submerged into the river with large rocks put on top to hold them in place. Cosmos the dog supervised the whole operation. There were four crates with 48 Vibert boxes containing a total of 18,422 future Pilot Peak 40-pound cutthroat. The eggs were eyed, which means they had been developing in the hatchery for approximately 20 days and little eyes could be seen in the egg case. They will hatch out in about 14 days in the 40-degree water. They are then termed sac fry as they carry a yolk sac on their stomach that is absorbed and used as food for about a week. Following that, they are called swim up and will leave the confines of the Vibert box and venture out into a hostile world where everything wants to eat you. Two years ago we had a 90% hatch rate. Long term survivability is low, but several hundred of them could make it to adulthood and grow into monster fish. My thanks to my wife Marsha for helping put together 96 Vibert boxes and being an electronic genius, Doug Ouellette for arranging the eggs, Jimmy Greenhalgh for accompanying me to the hatchery and, of course, the 15 TRF volunteers that showed up to get the eggs put out in record time (30 Minutes).
