One down, eleven to go. First, I hope everyone survived the Christmas and New Years holiday. Oh, let s not forget our annual dinner at Balesteri s Restaurant. Thanks to Jay and all the other folks who put it all together. As usual the menu was great all the way down to the liquid refreshment. Of course the annual dinner wouldn t be the same if we couldn t poke fun at one another, and we did plenty of that. There were a few surprises too: Maria Dobin was our Mud Hen award recipient. Rod Sanchez was the Sportsman of the Year and Rick McCombs received an Appreciation of Service Award. In addition to the food, fellowship and awards, the huge raffle tables was the hit of the night. Lots of big winners.thanks Rick! If you weren t able to make it this year I hope that you ll put it on the must do list for next year. With the new year there are a few things to get done: You need to send in your 2012 Steelhead card. You can also do this on-line at the DFG website. Also be sure to apply for your FHL fishing permit. It looks like the ponds are going to be in good shape this year. There s the Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton (Feb. 22, 23, 24) and also a Fly Tying Expo in Redding (Apr. 6-th.). Besides those things. It s a great time of year to tie up some flies and start making plans for the 2013 fishing year While you re thinking about things you need to be doing in the new year, don t forget about attending the SVFF monthly meeting. You can check out our new meeting place. It s at the Landing Zone Restaurant, at the Salinas airport. The meetings will start promptly at 7:00 PM, but be there at 6:00 if you want to join in for dinner before the meeting. This month, Jason Bachiero will be our speaker to discuss environmental work and changes being made at Fort Hunter-Liggett. With Jay & Roger s help, I ve already wet my line this year. So let s: Get m wet and keep m wet. -Sonny What s New at Fort Hunter-Liggett? If you re interested in what s been going on at FHL, this is the meeting you ll want to attend. If you ve fished Hunter-Liggett in the last couple of years, you ve probably noticed some changes. Well, there s more going on out at the fort that you'll want to hear about. Join us at the meeting next Wednesday. Remember The meeting is at the Airport, 6:00 for no host dinner, 7:00 for the meeting. In addition, to the program we ll raffle and all the usual stuff. Come out and see how Sonny does on his first meeting as Club President.. ed.

Two for one month Flies: Conehead Bunny Leach / Scud Bill has announced that there will be two flies this month: The Cone Head Bunny Leach and the Scud. Here s what you ll need for both. But if you don t have materials or equipment or knowhow or talent, that don t matter. Come on out to the board room at the airport on the 20th. Anyway. What the heck the worst thing that could happen is that you d get severely humiliated and made fun of. If that happened, you d be in good company because the whole group of guys that show up are all butt-heads that don t know what they re doing. And Bill puts up with all of them, so I m sure he ll put up with you too. You might even add a new addiction to you arsenal, just in time for the new year.. Use the shortest leader possible when fishing underwater. Lefty Kreh 2. The surgeon's knot, much easier to tie than the blood knot, is also stronger. Lefty Kreh 3. To get the test equivalent of tippet material using the "X" factor, subtract the x number from 8. Example, 5X subtracted from 8 equals 3 pounds test. Lefty Kreh 4. Wade upstream, not downstream. Noise will be muffled and you won't spook fish by dislodging material. Art Lee 5. The five best times to fish for big browns are: early in the morning at first light; the last half hour before dark and at night; after a summer rainstorm that muddies and cools the water; during a spawning run; and during a hatch of large insects such as the salmon flies or Green Drakes. Dale Spartas 6.. Marabou appears thicker when wet so a small amount creates the proper illusion. Erratic stripping with a marabou pattern is much less effective than a dead drift or steady retrieve. Hal Janssen 7. A Duncan loop or Uniknot allows a nymph to sink faster and move much more naturally in the water than a clinch knot. Dave Whitlock.

4 Page 4 Fly Times Tips and Tackle Saying good bye to Bill Carnazzo Bill Carnazzo was a California native, born on the Monterey Peninsula; his father emigrated from Sicily, and his mother was born shortly after her parents emigrated from there. His grandfather was a commercial fisherman in the waters of Monterey Bay. Bill grew up around fishing, and hung around at the Old Fisherman s Wharf as a youngster. He fished on occasion with his grandfather, and on his own in the surf, on the rocks, and around the wharves. As a teenager, he became interested in fishing the coastal streams in the area for trout and steelhead-the Carmel River which at that time ran to the ocean all year round and supported huge steelhead; creeks such as Garrapata and others south of Monterey; the Little Sur and Big Sur Rivers; and the streams in the Los Padres wilderness area between the coastal and Salinas River drainages. Bill also became a member of the Salinas Valley Fly Fishers along with his cousin Andy Pomo who continues as a club member today. Many of us had the opportunity to fish with Bill and most of us had the pleasure of being present at a club meeting where he shared his insights about fly fishing. Some of the club members were treated to Bill s hospitality at his house along the banks of the Upper Sac.. When Bill passed away last month, most of us were shocked,. Somehow, Bill was one of those special people who was not supposed to die. Not expected to die. He had a kind soul, a warm heart and a rye sense of humor. You couldn t spend a day on the water with Bill without feeling like he was your friend. He had a knack for making you comfortable in your own skin. For all of us who had the pleasure having you in our live, we say thank you Bill. We will miss you, but never forget you. R.Mc 2013 Outing Schedule ed. rambles At the Annual dinner Sonny passed out a list some potential outings for the year. They included: Kings River (Feb.), Nacimiento & Hunter Liggett (March), Pyramid (April), Rooster Comb & Delta (May), Shad on the Sac or American (June), Lake Almanor, Annie & Crater (July), San Antonio (Aug.), Merced & Forebay (Sept.), Redding area (Oct.), San Luis Forebay (Nov.) The Board has talked this whole thing over a bunch and the bottom line is: we need some fresh ideas. We ve had pretty good success with the Rooster Comb outing. Some of the pay to play venues like Rock Creek and Lake Christine have struck a cord. A few of the guys have made FHL a regular rendezvous point. Pyramid always generates some interest as well as San Luis as a standby. We haven t done much with Shad in the last few years nor the Delta. Some destinations require boats which we seem to be a little short of as a club right now. Others are more suitable for R.V s. which also limit who can go. Gambetta stirred a lot of interest with his still water presentation, which brings back the idea of a road trip. So, What do you think? What are we doing right? What are we doing wrong? What kind of outing would get your interest up? I mean interested enough that you d sign up and go. How about Davis Lake, Crowley, The Truckee, Bridgeport, The Walker, June Lakes? Are there any places that you have fished or know about that you d like to try out as a club outing? For one I ve often thought about doing a road trip outing: Plan a route with several fishing destinations along the way, maybe take a week or so and let folks meet up and join in wherever they wish.
