One of my favorite times of the year! The fish are starting to bulk up for the winter and this can be a very productive time to go fishing. Most kids are back in school, so families are at home leaving campgrounds virtually empty. Speaking of campgrounds, did you know that most forestry campgrounds are free this time of year? Yup this is why I like to plan my fishin vacation in October. It can get a little cold at times but it is worth it. So get out there and fish, then bring your fishing reports to the next meeting. Mick is headed to the Merced this month, Jay J and Scott Naylor have a guided float trip on the Stanislaus and I am headed to Northern CA to fish some remote lakes. If you have the time and are interested in going on any of these outings call me, Jay or Mick. Also, Lee Haskins is looking to put on a striper seminar at O Neil fore bay this month. In November we are going to Los Padres before they close the reservoir and the Trinity, which is always good in November. Guide Lee ( Haskins will speak this month on the art of striper fishing, so plan to be at the meeting to pick up on some important tips. Also, Lee is going to bring samples of his version of the Gurgler and the San Luis Smelt flies. Not to beat a dead horse but the end of the year is coming up and we really need some members to step up and join the board for next year. Please help us keep this club running. We have four spots to fill and your support is greatly appreciated. On a lighter note, Geoff Malloway is back from Alaska and happy as a clam. This might be a good time to go over to Central Coast Fly Fishing and see him to wheel and deal while he s still got a grin on his face. Lastly, I have to apologize for last month s newsletter not going out. Due to unforeseen Bandini I held up on doing the Prez message to the point where we just couldn t go out in time. That said Tight lines and see you all this next meeting. 2 Page 2 Fly Times What s going on in the world of fishing? Who s been fishing? Fly of the month: Kings River Caddis 52 Weeks of California Fly-Fishing Lewiston Lake Manzanita Lake Bridgeport Reservoir Convict Lake Lewiston Lake is located approximately 35 miles west of Redding at an elevation of 1,915 feet with a surface area of 615 acres and 15 miles of shoreline. There are several camping facilities located around the lake accommodating tents of RV's. All boating is permitted with a speed restriction of 10 mph with one improved launch facility. Boat rentals are available at the marina as well as fuel, bait, tackle, and snacks. Lewiston Lake is noted as a big trout lake and also holds a good population of bass, catfish, and bluegill. For more information contact the District Ranger Station at (530) Lakeview Terrace Resort ( 530) Trinity County Chamber of Commerce (800) Manzanita Lake is situated just south of Highway 89, about 50 miles east of Redding in the beautiful Lassen National Park. This lake is not stocked but holds some fine trophy rainbows. When the ice thaws in the spring feeding becomes quite heavy. No motorized boats are allowed. This is an excellent float tube lake with plenty of open water and fairly easy lake access. Manzanita is a catch and release only lake and you must use single point barbless hooks and artificial baits. For more information contact Lassen National Park at (530) Bridgeport Reservoir rests at an elevation of 6,500 feet near the quaint mountain community of Bridgeport. This 4,400 surface acre lake holds a large number of huge brown trout. All boating is permitted as well as overnight boating. There are two campgrounds located on the east shore along with a full Pattern: Kings River Caddis Hook: TMC 100 (size 14) Thread: Tan 6/0 Body: Tan dubbing 4 Wing: Turkey quill Hackle: Ginger or Brown (size 16) service marina and improved launch facilities. Backpacking, swimming, biking, and hunting are also available in the area. For more information contact Falling Rock Marina (760) Kens Sporting Goods (760) Paradise Shores Park (760) Convict Lake is one of the most beautiful places in the Eastern Sierra with crystal clear water surrounded by steep rugged mountain peaks. Convict has three miles of pine-covered shoreline resting at an elevation of 7,583 feet. There are two campgrounds located at the lake suitable for tents or RV's (no hookups, open April through October). Power boats are permitted with launch facilities and rentals available. Convict holds a good population for both brown and rainbow trout with many trophy fish taken yearly. For more information contact Convict Lake Resort at (800)

They are inviting all members to join in. They ll be camping at Knight Ferry River Edge Campground ( ) and Guide: Mark Contrell ( )will be leading the way. Talk to Jay or Scott at the meeting if you re interested.. It s never to soon to plan ahead. June outing on Clear Creek. This is a reasonable pay to play outing and the club will have cabins and creek to ourselves. Don t miss this one. Talk to Jay. Ed. already has his name on the list. His name has become synonymous with it and he has certainly given the pattern new life, especially among Striper enthusiasts. If you re interested in seeing more of Lee s flies, check out his web site. He s done some great and innovative things with foam.
