The club fly tying session, for Casting for Recovery, last month was attended by 6 members. In all, we tied 9 dozen flies for the cause. If you missed the tying event, Bill will gladly accept your tied fly donations. Just bring them to any general meeting. Last month s guest speaker was fishing guide, Don Brown. Don explored fishing techniques, equipment, flies and the right time of year to fish Lake Almanor, Pyramid and Lake Oroville. His insight was very informative and timely for the club s Almanor outing. Don has generously made an open invitation to club members to call him any time for current fishing information on the lakes and streams in the Northern Sierras. There were six of us on the club outing to Lake Almanor. The first part of the weekend was cold, wet and windy. Needless to say, the weather was not ideal for fishing the Hex hatch. Because to the weather, Greg and I drove over the hill to fish Eagle Lake on Friday morning. It s been 5 years since we have been there and the water level was much lower. We put our float tubes in at south shore near Gallatin s boat launch, then battling the wind gusts and rain for two and a half hours without a bump. After reaching the shore line, Greg was getting out of his float tube when a gust of wind threw his tube against the rocks. As he s stumbling around in his fins, another gust of wind tipped his tube over the rocks and it sailed out into the middle of the lake. I can still see him standing at the end of the dock waving down the only boater on the lake, to ask them if they had seen his float tube. After the storm blew over on Lake Almanor on Saturday, the sun broke out and the water flattened down. Later in the day, as the sun started to set, we started to see some Hexagenias popping out of their nymphal shuck. As it continued to get darker more flies were on the water and it was time to (cont. pg 2) National Security Threat Uncovered In more serious news from the Pentagon a stage one purple alert went out on the evening of 8 July 2016 at 19:30 hours warning of suspicious activities in the coastal area of Monterey County. First information was attained from satellite images. Local law enforcement was notified along with the Department of Homeland Security who immediately went into action. (See pages 2 for more.)

Local law agencies sent stealth drowns aloft for surveillance. Analysis of photos obtained from the drones confirmed that the suspicion activities appeared to be in preparation for some sort of heinous goings on. In a top secret report attained by yours truly, it was determined that the suspicions activities were associated with a clandestine group who had in past years set off multiple pyrotechnics and explosions in an apparent devious attempt to divert the Salinas River into the City of Seaside. The magnitude of the forthcoming ruckus was not fully apparent until Saturday morning when a mustachioed character, baring a strange resemblance to Yosemite Sam started directing the movement of heavy equipment. With the Taco truck was in place, The groups anointed leader, Ricardo, stepped to the podium, with taco in hand and commenced to whip his followers into a wild frenzy.. At this point the dust storm of activity obliterated the scene from the overhead drone surveillance. Just above the dust layer, however, long whips could be seen thrashing the air. In an attempt to cut off another Jeffertown tragedy, a fleet of county sheriff units was dispatched to the scene, only to have there way blocked by mounds of giant artichokes strategically placed in the entrance to the conclave. Helpless to intercede the officers could only wait in vain as they laid witness to the screams and unseen carnage. By Sunday morning all evidence had miraculously disappeared except for a few names scribbled in the sand: Loren, Greg, Phil, Dorothy. So in honor of these victims, I say: let s do it again next year! (ed.) (Prez Mess. Cont d) fish the hex on top water. Jack was the lucky one, hooking up to a three-pound rainbow on his first cast. The rest us casted to no avail until it was too dark see. It was disappointing that we didn t have a little more fish activity on the hatch that evening, but it was a great learning experience. Thank you to Jack and Rodney Clark for giving us some insight on how to fish the hex hatch at Lake Almanor. Don t forget the 2016 Muddy River Shindig this weekend, July 9 th at the Jefferson Ranch. 4 A Little Something About Fly Lines First: The fly line must match the weight of the rod. Somewhere near the rod butt will be inscribed its weight. Next you will decide which taper is best for your fishing conditions. Because of the manufacturers propensity to satisfy the fly fisherman's every desire, there are an almost infinite selection of tapers and variations of the same taper. Do not be overwhelmed, just be aware that fly lines basically come in level, double, weight forward, and shooting tapers. These are described as follows. Level lines are useless for fly fishing. Without any taper they cannot transfer the energy in a gradual succession. Don t waste your money on a level line. Double taper lines typically have a tapering section 6 to 10 feet long on each end of the line with a level section (the belly) in between them. The long taper keeps the fly farther away from the heavier belly section and thus allows a delicate presentation. They are also the easiest to cast long roll casts. This would be the taper of choice for restrictive conditions requiring rolls casts and delicate presentations. A double tapered line can also be the most economical line because it has two usable ends. It is recommended that they be reversed on the reel several times a season to prevent the coiled end from taking a set and becoming unusable. The disadvantage to double tapered lines are that they are more difficult to cast long distances and do not cast well against the wind. This taper would not be a choice for open water or wind resistant flies. Weight forward lines are by far the most popular lines and with good reason. The weight of a fly line is measured in the first 30 feet. Unlike the double tapers that gradually distribute this weight, the weight forward concentrate the weight more towards the end of the line. It then tapers down to a thin running line that allows easier long distance casts. The more forward the weight is placed, the more "shooting" power it has but at the expense of a delicate presentation.getting a distant roll cast with a weight forward line is difficult. Once the running line gets past the tip-top of the rod, there is not enough energy in the thin running line to turn over the fat belly section.. Shooting taper lines (also known as a shooting head) are short sections of fly line that are attached to a separate running line. They are specifically used for long distance casting and are anything but delicate. They are most often used when fishing for steelhead, salmon, and some saltwater species. Because they are so short, a number of different types and densities can be kept in a wallet or pocket and interchanged easily, as the particular fishing conditions require. Fly lines are either Floating or Sinking. which come in various densities. The more dense the line the faster its sink rate. This is important when fishing deeper waters.fly lines also come in a combination float/sink lines known as sinking-tips. The body of the line floats whereas the tip sinks. An alternative is to buy a floating line then attach a section of sinking tip.
