1 S ALINAS VALLEY FLY F I SHERS FLY TIMES June 2010 Inside this issue: Pump Doctor s Prescription By: President Dave Gambetta President s Message 1 Monthly Program 1 Outing report 2 Fly of the month 2 Sponsors 3 Outing Schedule 3 Notice 4 For Sale 4 Maps Board Members Dave Gambetta Club President Dave Hilbert Vice President / Program s Roger Caton Treasure Bill Pshide Secretary / Fly Tying Rick McCombs Newsletter Editor / Outings Deb Micheli Graphics Jay Jefferson Special events Welcome to another month in the life of the Salinas Valley Fly Fishers. I hear I missed a good meeting in May. I Want to thank Hank Smith from CVSA for a great presentation. He even left us with a copy his slide show, so if you are interested contact Deb Micheli for a CD. Rooster Comb was a blast. If you didn t go this year make sure you sign up for next year. Everyone had a good time and fish were caught. Those that hiked to Jackrabbit caught the most and Mick got the biggest bass out of Sam s pond. (More of that from Mick later in the newsletter). We even have a couple of Mudhen nominees out of this trip. Make sure to ask Richard Wilson about his run in with rattler. June is here the months are just flying by. I hope everyone is making time to get out and fish. This month we have Bernard Yin and Rick Mazaira from Sierra Fly ( Fisher Tours to give us the rundown on waters from Yosemite's Upper Tuolumne, Merced rivers, and south to the San Joaquin and Kings. I m sure they will be glad to answer any questions you have ie: best time to go, flies to use, were the secret spots are. Also coming up is the July 10 th BBQ Muddy Waters Classic so put that on your calendar. You won t want to miss out on this one. We have contests, a great raffle and of course the eats! Bring a friend, darn if you have two friends bring them both and the family too! Just remember to RSVP Jefferson ( ) or sign up at the June meeting. Last note, we may be losing the Salinas Community Center for our meetings due to cutbacks. We are looking into the Spreckles Fire Dept. Hall as an option. We will keep you posted. t ll next time Dave Fly fishing the Sierra s for June If you re thinking that you might go fishing for a change this year, Then this month s program is made for you. If the essence of fly fishing is trout fishing, then the essence of California trout fishing is the Western Sierras. Our June 9th program features Bernard Yin and Rick Mazaira from The Sierra Fly Fisher Guide Service. The guide service specializes in the waters of the Western Sierras from Yosemite's upper Tuolumne and Merced river, south to the San Joaquin and Kings River. The exciting thing about these waters is that they are close to us, they are loaded with fish and they ll be in good shape this year. So please put it on your schedule and make plans to join us for this month s general meeting....ed.
2 Page 2 Fly Times What s going on in the world of fishing? Who s been fishing? Fly of the month: Wiggle Tail 52 Weeks of California Fly-Fishing 1. Manzanita Lake 2. Kirman Lake 3. McCloud River Sierra Trout streams for 2010 Our June 9th guests are Bernard Yin and Rick Mazaira of The Sierra Fly Fisher Guide Service team. SFF specializes in waters from Yosemite's upper Tuolumne and Merced river, south to the San Joaquin and Kings River. They have knowledge and experience regarding both lower and higher elevation locations. SFF prides itself on targeting wild fish. Some highlights of their presentation will be early season pre -runoff angling on the Upper Kings, The Merced both in and outside of Yosemite as well as intercepting migrating browns in fall at their "Trout Camp" on the San Joaquin drainage. Being born and raised in Central California afforded SFF founder Jimmie Morales many opportunities to fish some great waters at a very young age. He still finds himself exploring new waters and gets just as excited when a client catches as when he catches one marks new access rights to certain waters along with Jimmie opening the Yosemite Rivers Fly Shop on Highway 41 in Oakhurst near the south entrance of Yosemite National Park. Representing Sierra Fly Fisher Guide Service at the June meeting will be guides Bernard Yin and Rick Mazaira. Bernard is recognized for his maniacal angling exploits in the So. Cal. mountains but grew up in Northern California under the wing of Andre Puyans at Walnut Creek's legendary Creative Sports fly shop and the Diablo Valley Fly Fishers. He guides seasonally for SFF. Corner him before or after the event to discuss his passion for certain not-to-be-named Monterey waters. Rick resides on the edge of Yosemite National Park and has an acute familiarity with that region and its quirks. Rick recently was invited to fly over the Kings drainage in a helicopter and there will be snippets of footage from that trek in their presentation. Be sure to find some time in your schedule to head into the Sierra s this year and there is no better way to plan for that fishing trip then coming out for the June meeting and talk with Rick and Bernard personally. Dave H. Pattern: Jay Fair s Wiggle Tail (B/O) Hook: #10-12 Scud Hook Thread: Black 8/0, 6/0 Tail: Burnt orange Marabou Body: Burnt orange Crystal Shuck Hackle: Burnt orange This fly is also tied in a variety of other colors: olive, brown, tan, etc A Few Reports A few folks have been out fishing lately. In addition to the Rooster Comb outing, which from first reports appears to have been a success. Club members have ventured up to Davis lake, to the McCloud and tried a little Shad fishing on the American. Generally river flows have been on the high side. A report from the Dickens on the Trinity suggests that flow are too high for good fishing right now. The Upper Sac is high with runoff but fishable. The McCloud likewise is a little tough but coming into shape. Shad are all through the system and looking good on the American as well as all the usually suspects. The boys at Davis on May 28th. woke up to 5 inches of snow, so as you might guess fishing was a little slow.. The bottom line: things are starting to happen.

Annual BBQ Jefferson Ranch Muddy Water Classic IV Rooster Comb Report Special thanks for the support of: Geoff Malloway Central Coast Fly Fishing 7172 Carmel Valley Rd. Carmel, CA ( ) Rick McCombs / Dave Hilbert Bill Pshide Rick McCombs / Jay Jefferson Well my friends this years trip up to the ranch was a huge success. We had a total of 16 club members, one guest and two young future members. The Micheli s came in force with Mick, Deb, Nick and Lily our granddaughter. The Gambeta s, Dave and Christine, Mark Teague, Dave and Hayden Hilbert, Rodger Caton, John Nesheim, Loren Kitamura, Dan Balma and his son Colton, Richard Wilson, Rodger and Ginny Williams, Bill Pshide and Tracy DeSilva all made the 18 mile trek back into the wilderness. Everyone caught fish this year some more that others and some bigger than others. Most used fly s some used plastic, not a problem on this trip because this outing is all about fun and food. We did plenty of both. There were quads with kids and dogs on board. There were guns going off. Rattle snakes and squirrels being shot and lots of adventures around the 5,600 acres of the ranch. I want to thank Scott Wilkinson so much for taking care of everyone, we had a ball. The only drama was a flat tire on the way in and one on the way out, not bad. Some large fish were caught this year, A bass of almost 7 pounds and some giant bluegill too. The weather was perfect except for a little wind. I am already looking forward to next year so I ll see you later my friends and thank you all for a wonderful bunch of memories..mick Note: General meeting (every 2nd Wednesday except Fly Fying (every 3rd the Airport) Board of directors Meeting (every 4th. the Airport) all members are welcome..
