Our guest speakers will be Heath Park, Gun Manager, and Phil Peden, Gun Smith, both with Gander Mountain. They will discuss recent innovations in shotguns, shotgun shells, and decoys. In addition, Bill Teague will discuss the new regional qualifier system for the Master National hunt test. 2 Hunting Retreiver Club, Inc Message From The President August 2006 Greetings TEJAS, Well our summer continues to be a huge success thanks to the efforts of so many Tejas members! The summer training program has drawn large numbers of handlers/dogs and the response has been extremely positive. A few weekends ago approximately 16 or more members braved the heat and attended a TEJAS work day wherein we manufactured and painted new holding blinds and shotgun holders, washed the Tejas trailer and still had enough time to get our dogs wet! In an effort to lighten up the trailer we have purchased new and much lighter signs for the AKC hunt test and discarded the old ones. We will purchase/replace the old UKC hunt test signs this fall. The month was also very productive from a business standpoint as the AKC sanctioned our fall hunt test/judges. The premiums should be available on the internet in the near future. We did suffer some bad news in July. HRC representative Janet Kimbrough has informed me that the Colorado Retriever Club (CRC) has now decided against co-hosting a fall UKC Upland Test with TEJAS citing the scheduling conflict with the fall Grand Hence, we must dedicate some time at our August meeting to address the void on our calendar. A few of our options are to host the event unilaterally (one or both days), select another date to co-host with CRC (spring 07 dates are available), host a standard UKC/HRC hunt test, scratch having a fourth TEJAS hunt test, and or host a pheasant hunt (like last year). In July the club voted to participate at the BASS PRO FALL HUNTING CLASSIC being held at BASS PRO in Katy, Texas in August BASS PRO will provide TEJAS with a couple of booths (free of charge) to promote TEJAS! Approximately 12 members volunteered to participate at the July meeting but more are needed! For additional information see the TEJAS calendar on our website or contact Chet or

3 We will have two guest speakers at this months meeting; a representative from Gander Mountain and Bill Teague will speak to the club about Master National. John Minutes from Meeting held July 5 th, 2006 The meeting was called to order by President John Moreman at 7:05pm One guest was present. The Guest speaker was Janet Kimbraugh, who spoke about the organization and running of upland hunt tests. A set of good Upland guidelines can be found on the HRC website. Old Business A motion to waive the reading of the minutes was made and passed. The treasurer passed out a report. There will be a work day on July 15 th with James Davis to make new holding blind supports, with training to follow. On July 22 nd, a training day/handling seminar will be hosted by BCSRC and Tejas at Hidden Lake Retrievers in Anderson, Tx New Business Donnie Brawley has volunteered to be HRC Spring Hunt Test chairman. Tejas has been invited to have a booth at Bass Pro Shop s Fall Hunting Classic, August 18 th -20 th. We will need volunteers to man the booth and for set up and take down. Lee Telling was approved as a new member by the Executive Committee. Dave Christianson has resigned as Region 3 Director for the Master Nationals. Tejas appreciates all of the hard work he has done in that position over the years. The member-at-large position is still open. A replacement will be voted in at the August Meeting. Text of the Master National Regional Qualifier Proposal AMENDMENT 5 -add ARTICLE X-NEW Article Master National Retriever Club-Regional Tests (Renumber current articles X and XI) Section 1 Regional Tests (a) A maximum of two Master National Regional Hunting Tests shall be held per region yearly and hosted by an MNRC member club. (b) 1) Regional tests shall be held between March and July of that year s Master National Hunting Retriever Test. 2) Regional tests shall be run as two or three-day events, and must meet the minimum requirements of a weekend hunt test. (c) All dogs entered must run the same set of tests. (d) Regional tests may be run as single events or in conjunction with a regularly scheduled AKC Licensed Hunting Test. Rationale: Allowing up to two tests per region gives more.exibility to the handler in dates and scheduling. It should also give handlers a test that is within their normal test-driving distance, reducing expenses and making it more available to amateur participants. This will also make regional tests more manageable in numbers: rather than a 150 dog regional there is the.exibility to have two that are smaller in number. Information concerning procedure for a club to request hosting a regional test and selection will be covered in the club s Policies and Procedures. The March-July date window should allow for tests in northern and southern sections of the country. The reason for the flexibility in the number of days that regional tests maybe held is that in some parts of the country a regional test may be quite small. For example the northern half of Region 3 often has fewer than 30 dogs qualifying for the Master National. These numbers would need no more than a two-day, single flight event. Unlike weekend tests where split stakes can run separate tests, it is imperative that all dogs run the same series at regional tests.

5 Section 2-Eligibility (a) Dogs eligible to enter a Master National Regional Test shall be required to obtain qualifying scores in a minimum of.ve Master tests conducted by member clubs, plus possessing an AKC Master Hunter title. In order to be counted towards the qualifying requirements, hunting tests at which qualifying scores are awarded must have a beginning date falling between January 1 and December 31 of the year preceding the current National Master Hunting Retriever Test. 1) Each entrant must pay an entry fee, to be determined by the Board of Directors and host club. 2) Dogs shall only enter one regional test per year unless ill or injured. Upon presentation of a veterinary certificate to the hunt test secretary a dog may enter another test. 3) Dogs residing in Canada that have fulfilled the eligibility requirements necessary to enter a regional test, must run in the region that most closely corresponds to their Province of residence. Rationale: Entry fees will vary depending on the location of the test and individual requirements of each situation. The fee should be close to what is charged for a weekend hunt test. Costs over and above what would be normal would primarily involve bringing in judges from out of the area. If the MNRC became involved in sharing the expenses they would also be reimbursed and receive a percentage of any pro.ts. These details would be covered in the club s Policies and Procedures and are subject to situations with individual host clubs. In order to be fair to all, the limit must be one test. To allow more would to open up charges that this is easier for professional handlers to qualify. All dogs have the same chance. We do have a few Canadian dogs that enter the event, a provision for them must be included. Section 3-Judges (a) Judges for Master National Regional Hunting Tests must have a minimum of eight points and meet AKC eligibility. Selection of judges shall be by the Master National Retriever Club Board of Directors. No member of the Board of Directors of the Master National Retriever Club may serve as a judge for regional tests, even if they resign, during their respective term of service. Rationale: Regional tests will require many judges, too many to place the restrictions placed on judge selection for MNHRT. The only way to have consistent quality of judges from region to region is to have the MNRC Board in charge of this process. The recommendations and specifics may be subject to change and are best placed in the club Policies and Procedures. Section 4-Prizes and mechanics of tests (a) No cash prizes shall be awarded, but the dogs and handlers who qualify may be awarded such trophies as this Club and the regional host club may determine. (b) The mechanics of conducting the Master National Regional Hunting Tests shall be determined by policies and procedures adopted by the Board of Directors, and notice of such shall be given to member clubs and contestants. Rationale: Issues such as costs, splitting fees, application to hold a regional should be in P & P s rather than the by-laws as they are subject to constant change and at this point experiment.
