5 Fly of the Month for January 2017 Barr s Tung Teaser By: Ray Narbaitz John Barr s day job was being a dentist (now retired). His passion was coming up with flies that were extremely effective when it came to catching fish. Over the years he developed a lot of flies to be used in his home waters in Colorado. While he is now famous for his Trout flies, his first creations were often for catching Bass. His flies were well known in Colorado and around much of the Rockies. Then, Umpqua introduced a fly he had designed some time ago, called the Copper John, and his reputation spread worldwide. Shortly after its introduction, every fly manufacturer on the planet copied it and started to distribute it. After a year, it was, and remains the top selling nymph in all of fly fishing. It is far from the only fish catching fly to come out of his creative mind. I hadn t looked at it for a while, so the other day I pulled his book (aptly named, Barr Flies) off the shelf. If you have a real interest in fly tying, I strongly recommend you get the book if you don t already have it. As I marveled at the many great patterns he explains in the book I read again about a pattern I had tied when I first got the book when it came out nine years ago. It was this month s F.O.T.M., the Tung Teaser. The Tung comes from the fact that it uses a tungsten bead. As for the rest, you can make up your own reasons for the name. In his book, Barr explains that he was heavily inspired by the Prince Nymph when he came up with the fly. He wanted to keep the color scheme of the Prince, but he also wanted a fly that was more durable. He used dubbing instead of Peacock Herl for the Abdomen and Thorax, and changed the legs a bit from the original. His wing case is very reminiscent of the wing case on the Copper John. It is an attractor nymph, and with the legs and wing case, it can also easily pass for a Stone Fly nymph. Barr says that in his home state, guides use it as their number one Nymph during the Green Drake hatch. As an attractor, you could use it for the Drake hatch, or as a general Stone Fly, or a Caddis, or as just a meaty looking fly that fish want to eat. The first time I used it was on opening day in the riffle water above the diversion dam on Hat Creek a few years back. I didn t ask the Trout what they thought it reminded them of, but they took it quite willingly. Happy New Year! Hook: TMC 5262, or other 2X long nymph hook, 8 18 Thread: Black 8/0 Bead: Gold Tungsten Weight: Lead Wire, sized to hook Tail: White Goose Biots Rib: Gold Wire Abdomen: Arizona Synthetic Peacock, Bronze Wing Case: Mottled Thin Skin, Pearl Flashabou, Epoxy or UV cured material Thorax: Same as Abdomen Legs: Mottled Brown Hen-Back Fibers Debarb hook, thread on Bead and insert in vise Start thread and take it to the back of the hook If you are going to use lead wire, now is the time to place it on the hook. Push it forward so it slides into the opening of the bead. Interestingly enough, while Barr calls for it in the recipe, he does not include it in the step by step instructions. Do what you want. Tie in two Biots with the curve opposing each other for the tail. Make the tail about a half shank long. Wrap the biots up to about the half way point of the shank and trim off the excess. Tie in the Ribbing Wire and wrap it back to the base of the tail. Apply dubbing to the thread and wrap the body to about the 70% point of the shank. You want the body to be tapered toward the front. Spiral wrap the Wire through the Abdomen, ending it behind the bead. Tie it in and break off the excess. Tie in the Flashabou right behind the bead, wrapping it back toward the tail. You want to wrap back over the Abdomen to about the 60% mark on the hook. Make sure the Flashabou is centered on the top of the hook. Wrap in the Thin Skin in the same manner. Dub in the Thorax, making it a little fatter than the end of the Abdomen ending with it flush against the Bead. Peel a clump of fibers off the Hen Back: making sure the tips are even. Roll the clump into a bundle and tie it in on the opposite side of the hook. You want the tips to go to just about the point of the hook. Take another clump, and do the same on the near side of the hook. Cut off the excess as closely as you can. If the legs stick out to sharply from the hook, use a little dubbing to wrap behind them, close to the bead, to push them back a bit. Pull the Thin Skin over the top of the Thorax and tie it off right behind the bead. Pull the Flashabou over the top, trying to make sure it is centered over the Thin Skin, and tie it off. Cut the Thin Skin and Flashabou off as close to the bead as you can. Make a few more tight turns of thread to smooth off the head of the fly, Whip Finish, and cut off your thread. Use your Epoxy or some sort of Clear Cure to cover the wing case, making sure it goes over onto the back of the bead. Notes: The Bronze Synthetic Peacock is lighter than Peacock Herl when it comes out of the package. However, it does darken quite a bit when it gets wet. The material comes in several colors, and I m sure you could tie it in any color you want Synthetic Peacock is not the easiest material there is to dub. It will work better if you dub it on the thread as thinly as possible, and use more wraps If you don t have Hen-Back feathers, don t worry about it. Most any brown, soft hackle will do. I think Pheasant body feathers would also work.
