Fall fly tying classes begin on September 12th with an introduction to fly tying. After that, classes will be held each Monday night for six weeks. No need to worry about your current level of fly tying experience, there will be something for everyone. If you would be interested in an Intermediate Level or Advanced Fly Tying class you need to sign up in advance. Merril KC Chapter Derby at Roaring River State Park - Sept 30th - Oct 2, 2016 This fall, the Kansas City Chapter of the MTFA will again hold its annual club derby. This is an informal derby for members of the club. The winner will be decided by who catches the longest fish, so measure and take pictures. Please join us for the festivities and frivolity. Reservations can be made for camping or motel at the state park, and lodging is available outside the park at several campgrounds and motels. The schedule for Saturday is breakfast and lunch on your own, and dinner (catered) at 5:00pm at the pavilion. Sunday lunch at 11:30am, awards ceremony and Princes of the Stream ceremony. 2 Page 2 Upcoming Events September 12, 2016 Fly Tying Classes Start September 13, 2016 E-Board Meeting September 30 - Oct 2 MTFA Club Derby Roaring River State Park October 11, 2016 E-Board Meeting October 22, 2016 Taneycomo Fishing Chili Lunch with the Springfield Chapter CFM - News Update by Bob Randall (Springfield Chapter) Conservation Federation of Missouri Affiliate Summit meeting: Kim Schultz, Ralph Eichholtz, and I (Bob Randall) attended the CFM Affiliate Summit here in Springfield on Friday, August 19. It was a good meeting. Here are a few highlights that are important to us: -CFM Executive Director Brandon Butler (he spoke at our August 2015 meeting) has spoken with both gubernatorial candidates and says both are committed to conservation in Missouri. He feels we have the best of all the candidates who were in the running in the primary. -none of the legislation that would have threatened Missouri conservation passed in the last legislature. -Missouri State Parks Director Bill Bryan says that the Eleven Point River State Park in Oregon County will proceed despite earlier legislative efforts to prevent it. -the November election will include Amendment 1, the extension of the Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax. Please vote yes. This is important for conservation. Parks, Soils and Water Sales Tax: I (Bob Randall) will never use this club to promote politics EXCEPT to discuss conservation issues. The MDC was created by a constitutional amendment back in 1936 to keep politics out of conservation and to promote the use of scientific techniques in management. In 1976, again by constitutional amendment, Missourians passed a 1/8th percent sales tax to fund the MDC. In 1999, politicians attempted to hijack the funds for political gain but were stopped by the Missouri Supreme Court. The value to conservation in Missouri from this tax is significant and has made Missouri the envy of every other state conservation department. As a result, there is a 10 year renewal for a similar tax (1/10th percent sales tax) for the state parks and the state's soil erosion and water quality efforts. It is not a new tax. It was started about 30 years ago and has been renewed several times since. Approximately, 75% of the state parks' funding comes from this tax yet there is no entrance fee to Missouri's state parks. With this tax, we have gone from having the nation's second worst erosion problem to being close to the best. Polling suggests that it is likely to pass again. However, it needs to pass by a high margin so that we send a message to contrary politicians who would like to get their hands on conservation and natural resource management practices and finances. Other states are watching Missouri and a strong win here will help conservation and natural resource management elsewhere. Vote yes on Amendment 1 in November. It's good for Missouri.

3 Page 3 President s Message Cont d: job, it was very good. I recommend that we consider having them cater our dinner again this year. We have a club outing to Taneycomo coming up in October, this is in conjunction with the MTFA Springfield Chapter Chili Feed, which was enjoyed by our club members that attended last year. The highlight of the fall is our annual Chili dinner on October 25. Invite and bring a friend to any of our club s activities for fellowship, fun and sharing fishing experiences. Thank you David Cook and Darrell Durst for sharing their Alaska fishing trip experience with the club at the past August meeting. Question: What kind of Fish do you find in a Bird Cage? Bill Beckman Fish It! by Gary Davisson When I get to my fishing destination I like to take a few minutes to observe the other fisher persons, the water and what the fish are doing before I ever step into the stream or cast my fly. One of the things I see most fishermen do is make their cast and then almost immediately pick it back up and re-cast again. Many years ago while fishing on the San Juan River with a guide, I did this very same thing. Mark explained to me that I needed to fish every cast to the end. He said flies only catch fish while they are floating on or in the water. If I see one of my buddies doing this, I always remind them that you can t catch a fish unless your fly is in the water. There are three reasons you should fish your fly through a run. One: Whether it is a single fly or a tandem midge rig, the fact is that if you rip them off the water to re-cast you cause quite a commotion. The noise, ripples and the splashes that occur when you rip your line off the surface will either spook the fish or at least alert them that you are there. If your fly hits the water, leave it, let it run it s course through the run, at least well down stream before picking it up to re-cast. Two: Take your time between cast to think about your cast and the drift you just completed. Ripping your flies out of the water only to recast without changing anything will not make the next presentation any more successful. If you land your fly not where you intended be it because of wind or some other factor let the fly drift through the run before taking it out of the water. If you do not take the time to evaluate what you did and make adjustments it only sets you up to probably making another undesirable cast. Move your feet, rotate your body, check the distance. Take the time to maximize your chances to succeed. Three: It s the never know factor. Just because you made a bad cast doesn t mean you will not have results. The trout do not know you made a bad cast and your drift may go right over a trout that you didn t even know that was there. Making a bad casts is just part of life. We all do it, but sometimes those awful cast produce good results. So if you make that bad cast, it s best to let it go, let the drift play out and view each cast as a learning experience. Evaluate and make adjustments.

4 Page 4 Project Healing Waters Report by Jim Kissane PHWFF Wins Bet, Donation From The National Defense Radio Show Members of our PHWFF Kansas City Program held a fly casting lesson at James A. Reed Conservation Area and received $500 in donations for their efforts. In June, Jerry Newberry and Randy Miller of The National Defense Radio Show interviewed Mike Davis about Project Healing Waters. During the interview, Jerry and Randy challenged Mike that if we could teach them how to fly cast, they would each make a $250 donation to our program. Mike Davis presents Jerry Newberry with a fly fishing outfit, as Jerry s co-host Randy Miller looks on. We met them at Plover Lake and in short order, both Jerry and Randy were casting flies. The Greater Kansas City Program is grateful for their generous donations and support. The National Defense is the only nationally syndicated talk radio show that focuses exclusively on topics concerning today's active-duty military, veterans and those who support them. PHWFF Calendar: Veterans Salute 2016 will commemorate the 25 th anniversary of the Gulf War Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Midwest Genealogy Center, 3440 Lee s Summit Road, Independence, MO, one mile north of I-70. A full day of events will begin at 9 am and will include panel discussions and rare memorabilia. Also this month: Sept. 13: General meeting, Rainbow Fly Shop, 4621 S Shrank Dr. Independence, 5:00 pm. Food, fun and fly tying with Matt. Sept. 20: General meeting,, Lake Jacomo, MO. Rockbridge Trip We held our third annual outing to Rockbridge Rainbow Trout Ranch near Ava, MO, in July. This is becoming our most popular outing, with great fishing, beautiful surroundings and first-rate accommodations. The fish are big and strong, earning the nickname Missouri Steelhead. There are a lot of them, too. All our participants said this was the best trip yet. Thanks to Jack s Stack Barbecue for donating a delicious supper; and thanks to the folks at Rockbridge Rainbow Trout Ranch for their wonderful hospitality. Sept. 21: KCVAMC, Drug and Alcohol Recovery Floor, 1 pm. Sept. 30-Oct. 2: MTFA Fishing Derby at Roaring River State Park near Cassville, MO. From the March 1972 Trout Line: Fishing Tale Overheard recently while standing near an arm-weary fly fisherman casting a #24 gray midge toward a wary 14 inch rainbow. Try it -you ll like it. While I was standing there, that rainbow did try it. No, you guessed wrong, the trout didn t mutter, I can t believe I ate that whole thing. as he was being hoisted into the landing net. Nope, didn t happen that way at all -he broke the 7x tippet on the first jump! I chewed two Alka-seltzers and continued fishing upstream. From the March 1961Trout Line: News from Around What s with all the television stars we ve been seeing on the squint box. The first evening on Harold Ensley s show, THE SPORTSMAN S FRIEND, we saw Butch Carter and Bob Harris. A couple of good looking guys, on the screen, tying some flies that even looked better. One short week later appearing on the same program were Clarence Peaslee and John Murphy, doing more talking. In talking to Clarence about how tall he looked on the program, he smiled and confessed that it was real easy to look tall if you re standing on a box. Nice work, fellers, Harold couldn t have picked four finer sportsmen to publicize fly tying and trout fishing. Hope you have enjoyed reading some of the articles that were published in the Trout Line through the years. I know I sure did. From time to time I will be putting more information that I discover looking through all these old Trout Lines.
