There were 7500 trout released plus 50 lunkers. I hope someone from MTFA caught one of those lunkers. The spring session has concluded. Our lead fly tying instructor Merril Miller is already looking forward to the fall classes. If you are interested, whether a beginner wanting to learn how to tie your own flies or a more advanced fly tier and need help to tie a certain fly, come and join us. MTFA will help you learn how to use all the different tools of fly tying. Merril MTFA Lunker Dinner Members and guest gathered at Fleming hall for the annual Lunker Dinner on February 23. This year we had a potluck dinner. David Cook prepared the brisket which was excellent (sorry if you missed out), the side dishes and desserts were outstanding as our club is blessed with some awesome cooks. I don t think anyone went home hungry. After a brief business meeting, David Cook conducted a raffle for some great fly fishing prizes. A special thank you to those individuals that took the time to get donations for the raffle and congratulations to those that won. The 2016 club officers swearing in ceremony was postponed because we were missing over half of the board. We will hold it at the next club meeting. Fly Tying Ideas from Gink & Gasoline by Kent Klewein I m always looking for ways to make my fly tying more efficient so I can whip out a few more flies when I sit down at the tying bench. Sometimes the best ideas come from my friends and family who don t even fly fish. I was completely surprised these holidays when my wonderful Mother-in-law handed me this magnetic parts tray to open up Christmas morning. What a brilliant idea on her part to find a way to help me keep track of my terminal tying materials and finished flies. God knows I spend a fair amount of time on my hands and knees searching for items that have fallen off my tying bench. No more will I have to deal with dropped hooks, beads and other materials on the floor when I m tying flies. For any fly shop owners out there that happen to see this, I recommend you pick some of these guys up at your local Auto Zone and stack them next to the cash register. 4 Page 4 Tippet Rings: Tippet Rings are great for lengthening the life of your leaders. Photo By: Louis Cahill Leaders have got quite expensive over the past couple decades. Recently, I saw a pack of two fluorocarbon leaders retail for $20.00 in a fly shop. That s a pretty good hit to the wallet if you get out on the water to fly fish regularly. One way you can prolong the life of your leaders is to use tippet rings. The tippet ring takes the leader out of the equation by providing the angler a reusable anchor point to tie on tippet and attach flies. Climax manufactures and sells tippet rings and although I don t like using them for my dry fly fishing because they can create micro-drag, they work very well for nymph fishing. Tippet Ring Rigging Instructions What I like to do is take a 7 1/2 tapered 2X or 3X leader and tie the end directly to the loop ring. I then tie of 4X-6x tippet to the other side of the loop rig and tie on my tandem nymph rig. This keeps me from having to cut into my leader when I m changing out flies or if I break off on a snag fishing. The tippet rings are also very nice for anglers that struggle with their eye sight up close, and makes it very easy for them to rig up quickly. This isn t for everyone but for an initial $5 investment, it s a cool piece of fly fishing gear that can save you money in the long run and should be considered. Fly Tying Materials Needed Tri Lakes Fly Fishing Expo At our E-Board meeting Merril Miller asked about acquiring some much needed fly tying materials for the fly tying classes. The club supplies all materials needed for fly tying classes. One of the members made the suggestion to ask club members for any extra fly tying materials they may have lying around that has not been used for a length of time. If you have any extra fly tying materials, thread, hooks, beads, hackle, dubbing, colored wire, etc, please call Merril Miller at: merrilgofish@aol.com or call ( ) if you would like to donate. April 11th is the date for Missouri's largest fly fishing show. The Tri-Lakes Fly Fishing Expo is sponsored by the Tri-Lakes Fly Fishers at the Brighton Hwy Assembly of God Church Annex (5403 Hwy F, Brighton, Missouri). The event runs from 9 am to 5 pm, and admission is free. There will be a breakfast and lunch concession by the Assembly of God Youth Group. The Expo is an opportunity to see thirty of the nation's best fly tiers. Featured program presenters at the Expo include Marc Pinsel ("Why You Don't Catch Fish"); Steve Jensen ("Knots and Leaders"); and Mike Huffman ("Rethinkin' Fly Bassin' Techniques"). The event also includes a casting pool, fly fishing instruction, casting demonstrations, fly tying lessons, fly tying demonstrations, and exhibitors such as Fly Fishing for Ozark and fly fishing guide.
