Club Chronicle Since 1972, promoting the sport of fly fishing December 2014 Southeast Idaho Fly Fishers, 257 North Main, Pocatello, Idaho 83204, Google SEIFF I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E From the President Upcoming Club Program November Board Minutes Fly of the Month Area Fishing Reports Taylor s Hot Spot Fish & Game Articles Event Calendar The SEIFF December meeting is the perfect event to get rid of some of that early winter funk From the President By Tom Banyas Dear SEIFF Members and Friends, As we are slowly working our way through November, up to this week, the weather has been quite good. Relatively moderating temperatures, excellent Blue Winged Olive hatches along with good streamer and nymph fishing has helped make the first half of this month tolerable in regard to what we all love to do. If you are a Steelheader, last year s terrible run has turned into this year s great opportunity to catch many more of one of the most incredible freshwater fish on the planet. One thing is for certain. As I am writing this, the weather has taken a turn for the worse. All we can hope for is a better weather outlook for the second half of November. Hopefully, we can still get some less extreme and tolerable fishing in before things totally freeze up. This brings me to a very important point...many of us will still continue to fight the winter elements, either be it winter fly-roding, ice fishing, snow machining or just sitting down on various evenings or weekends at the fly tying bench tying and creating/recreating our favorite patterns for the upcoming season. Hopefully, we can still dream about the great hatches of insects and the patterns that we tie to match Mother Nature. Yes, I too am saddened about the weather, but we have a special opportunity here! The SEIFF December meeting is the perfect event to get rid of some of that early winter funk and look ahead as opposed to backwards. Merry Christmas This upcoming meeting on Thursday December 11 th will combine some great information and our annual pre- Christmas social event. Everyone is invitedmembers and non-members (kids too, please) alike. Come and enjoy the warmth of others company and listen what SEIFF has to offer in the community. The club will provide soft drinks, cookies, candies and many other artery clogging delicacies while you listen to a short program provided by the Casting for Warriors organization. Casting for Warriors is supported and sponsored by Grace Lutheran Church as an outreach to those veterans that might need any type of help relating to re-entry into the normalcy of peaceful society. Casting for Warriors does this through all aspects of fly-fishing and the love for all the great outdoors that we have around us. SEIFF was a proud sponsor of this program this past year and hope s to continue with its support. Just think of this event as the kickoff for our 10-pound holiday weight gain. I speak purely in jest, as this meeting can be great fun and a learning experience for all involved. (Continued on Page 2, President) Clicking on this icon will connect you to the SEIFF website for more information about this topic.

SEIFF Club Chronicle December 2014 Page 2 Upcoming Club Program By Tom Banyas, Program Chair December Club Program The December 11 th, 2014 SEIFF club meeting will combine some great information about the club s support of the Casting for Warriors program and our annual pre-christmas social. Caryn and Scott Elliott will be here to provide a slide presentation on this past September s Casting for Warriors first annual outing at Camp Perkins in the Idaho Sawtooth Mountains. SEIFF club meeting will combine information about Casting for Warriors program and our annual pre-christmas social Casting for Warriors is supported by Grace Lutheran Church and other local contributors, including the SEIFF. This organization provides an outreach to wounded American military servicemen and women that need help relating to reentry into the normalcy of peaceful society. Casting for Warriors does this through all aspects of fly-fishing and the love for all of the great outdoors that we have around us. Volunteers provide lessons in casting, knot tying, fly tying, entomology and fishing. All of this was combined into a great weekend of fellowship and fly-fishing at beautiful Camp Perkins. During the program, Caryn and Scott will recap this past September s event with the slide presentation and give feedback for future Casting for Warriors outings. The meeting/social is Thursday December 11 th, at the Portneuf River Outfitters Fly Fishing Store on 157 North Main St. in Old Town Pocatello. The program will begin around 7:00PM. Remember, the club will provide soft drinks, cookies, candies and many other artery clogging delicacies. If you would like, bring along some munchies that the club can share or just come along for the fun. Very sincerely, Tom Banyas Programs Guy, SEIFF President (Cont.) All that the Southeast Idaho Fly Fishers offers is open to anyone and free to the public. It is always a pleasure to see both old and new faces alike. Please come join us? The meeting /social / is Thursday December 11 th, at The Portneuf River Outfitters Fly Fishing Store on 257 North Main in Old Town Pocatello. We will begin about 6:45 PM. If you would like, bring along some munchies that the club can share or just come along for the fun. I truly hope to see you there!!!! Happy Holidays to All, Tom Banyas President-Southeast Idaho Fly Fishers.

SEIFF Club Chronicle December 2014 Page 3 November Board Meeting Minutes By Tom Banyas Attendance: Tom Banyas, Vic Loiselle, Clyde Lowther, Bud Smalley, John Taylor and Roger Thompson Minutes: Minutes from the last meeting were read and accepted as read. Financial Report: Clyde Lowther reported that all checks and monies have been deposited into the SEIFF account, all has been reconciled and the current balance in the SEIFF account is $20, December Program: Tom Banyas has arranged a program provided by Caryn and Scott Elliot recapping this past September s Casting for Warriors outing at Camp Perkins. SEIFF has provided both volunteers and flies/equipment for this organization. Our Christmas social will occur at this meeting also. A potluck consisting of finger foods, chips, soda etc. with the club purchasing some pizza to help round out the evening was recommended. Future Programs: The proposal to pursue two presenters; Bob Jacklin and Boots Allen was discussed and decided that SEIFF provide the funds necessary to bring these two fly fishing icons to Pocatello. Tom Banyas will be working with the Idaho Falls club (Snake River Cutthroats) to set dates and reimbursement for the presenters. The Snake River Cutthroats monthly programs are the second Wednesday of the month, (our meetings follow the next day) giving both organizations the opportunity to work together and schedule these events. Fly of the Month The Grey Goose This is a midge pattern that is also the pattern of the month for the Federation of Fly Fishers. Although I have never fished it, it does appear very interesting and piqued my interest and has the characteristic of a midge pattern that may be effective on local waters. An easy tie, it certainly would be worth the effort of tying a few for your personal use. The creator is unknown. The pattern is one of the required flies to be tied from the Federation s newly developed Bronze award of the Federation s newly developed Fly Tying Skills Program. For further information re the details and an instructional video of tying this fly, go to the Federation website: Outreach: It was suggested that get well/thinking of you card be sent to Dave Johnson and Denny Jones families for medical issues they are dealing with. Tom Banyas will take care of this. Meeting was adjourned at 7:45 PM Materials List Hook: #10-14 scud hook TMC 2487, Daiichi 1130, TMC 403BLJ, Umpqua U202, TMC 2488 Dai-Riki 125, Dai-Riki 135 Thread: Black 8/0 Uni-Thread or equivalent Rib: Fine Silver wire Body: Canada goose wing fibers (herl) or similar Wing Case: Canada goose wing fibers (herl) or similar Thorax: Peacock herl

SEIFF Club Chronicle December 2014 Page 4 Reports This Past Year Courtesy of: Area Fishing Reports & Tying Demos General Stuff over the Whole Region! - With the extreme cold weather (1º overnight low night before last) the whole area has almost come to a standstill (freeze-up, maybe) as far as fishing goes. It will, supposedly, warm up to almost above freezing later in the week. Portneuf River above Lava - Remember that the whole river is now open year round except for a small portion inside the city limits of Lava Hot Springs. Been hearing some good reports, from the upper stream above Lava. Lots of good access at the Sportsman s Access points. Water is low and clear and cold! Baetis and Blue Wings for the DFO s, along with streamers, nymphs for the rest of the population. Portneuf River below Lava - Water s low, clear, and very cold. Funny thing is, this area hardly ever develops even edge ice due to the warm springs in and around Lava. Some nymph and streamer activity. Find the deep, dark holes and run your fly through them. All Seasons Angler Snake Below American Falls Dam - Some actually fished it Tuesday morning, but bailed out a little earlier than ordinary. Any nymph as long as it s got some red, along with Rubber Buggers (white is the most popular) in black, rootbeer, orange, and white. Bear River, Soda Reservoir (Alexander Reservoir) at Soda Point-Water was reported to be a little cloudy/green, but at a good, fishable flow. Nymphs in the runs right below the dam; streamers and nymphs in the area around the bend. Bear River, Black Canyon - Water level is great at 75 cfs, very constant flow. It s clear, not too much moss and weed growth. Last time I was there, lots and lots of fish in the <12 size. Midges as in Zebra Midges in several different colors and midge adults like the Grizzly Midge, Griffith s Gnat, etc. and on a warmer day Baetis/BWO s Bear River, Cover Power Plant - As above, the water s at 75 cfs, very constant, clear and fishable. Not much loose moss or weeds. Much better fish and fishing than above. Reservoirs - Haven t heard much of anything since the cold weather. Before that both Henry s Lake and Hawkins were doing very well. Taylor s Hot Spot Below American Falls Reservoir Hey winter decided to show up--so much for reservoirs for a while! Below American Falls dam from the boat ramp on down to eagle rock can be some righteous fly fishing, usually nymphs or streamers. Whether you use a strike indicator or just strip it you can have some great action! So far this winter the c.f.s. has been around 380, anywhere from c.f.s. will be just fine. There is good access right at the boat ramp below the dam, down by the hatchery and down around pipeline. If the roads are dry, Mary s Mine or Eagle Rock Area can be great access also. Do not drive down these roads if snow covered or muddy. Good luck and good fishing

SEIFF Club Chronicle December 2014 Page 5 Compilation of IF&G Articles Jennifer Jackson IF&G F&G Bringing More Steelhead to Boise River Idaho Fish and Game will stock approximately 300 steelhead in the Boise River Wednesday, November 12. The fish will be released in the river from the Glenwood Bridge to Barber Park. Because of their size - six to 12 pounds - the actual number of steelhead stocked will depend on the capacity of the tanker truck hauling the fish from Oxbow Hatchery on the Snake River. All steelhead stocked in the Boise River will lack an adipose fin (the small fin normally found immediately behind the dorsal fin). Boise River anglers catching a rainbow trout longer than 20 inches that lacks an adipose fin should consider the fish a steelhead. Besides a fishing license, anglers hoping to tangle with one of the hatchery steelhead need a $12.75 steelhead permit, good for 20 fish. Though required in other steelhead waters, barbless hooks are not required for Boise River steelhead angling. Any steelhead caught by an angler without a valid steelhead permit must immediately be returned to the water. Steelhead limits on the Boise River are three fish per day, nine in possession and 20 for the fall season. For information about the Boise River steelhead release, contact the Fish and Game Nampa office at or check the Fish and Game website at Upcoming Events General Membership Meeting, program T/B/A, 7 P.M., Portneuf River Outfitters, 207 N. Fall Coho and Chinook Salmon Harvest Seasons End Soon The historic, first time ever season for Coho salmon in Idaho will end for the year Sunday, November 16 in the Clearwater River basin. The Coho season opened October 17 on the Mainstem and Middle Fork Clearwater River from the mouth upstream to Clear Creek, and on the North Fork Clearwater River downstream from Dworshak Dam. This new fishery resulted from the work of the Nez Perce Tribe, which initiated a Coho salmon hatchery program to restore Coho to the Clearwater River basin. That program has resulted in growing returns, including this year's run. As of Saturday, November 1, over 17,400 Coho salmon had passed Lower Granite Dam. November 17 marks the end of the fall Chinook harvest season. The season ended October 31 in the Clearwater River, a short stretch of the lower Salmon River and in the Snake River, except the reach from Cliff Mountain Rapids to Hells Canyon Dam, which closes November 17. As of November 2, anglers had kept 62 and released 7 Coho, for a total of 69 fish and had caught and kept 183 marked adults and 66 jack fall Chinook and caught and released 561 unmarked fish in the lower Clearwater River. They caught and kept 604 adults and 382 jacks and caught and released 3,396 unmarked fish in the Snake River. Share Your Outdoor Photos on Fish and Game's Website A picture's worth a thousand words.
