The older I get, cold, piercing winds, lots of snow and temperatures below 30 degrees are much less fun than they used to be. In any case, for me, the end of the year brings reflection on much of what has occurred. I hope that the year has been a good one for you also. Some nice fish were brought to the net while others (definitely bigger) were lost in valiant attempts to subdue my quarry. In some respects, to lose to a big fish in his environment can be an awe-inspiring event. As the winter takes hold, this is a great time to replenish the fly boxes with our deadly favorites and to experiment on new creations that may even hold more promising for our future outings. Or-you might be one that has strayed from the light and gone to the Dark Side during these cold, bleak and shadowy days-ice fishing! I personally haven t been on the ice for the past 3 years.nursing 2 new hips that I didn t want to harm while they were (are) in the healing process. But now, today I am going to the garage and get my gas auger running again and soon gingerly walk out on the ice, drill some holes and drop a couple of lines in. I think I finally have gotten my fishing buddy Dave to consent to get back out on the ice this year and experience that truly invigoration sting and numbness we get in the fingers and toes while attempting to catch our quarry through a hole in the ice, much like our eskimo ancestors did. WOW.what a way to go!!!!! Not to say that there won t be any more days left for the fly rod though-last winter was as warm and open as I ever can remember and we fished through all of it. Whatever your preference might be to help get you through the winter-have at it and it will soon again be prime time for the fly rod!!!!! Thank you all very much for your support of the SEIFF board and the club in general. Our plans are to continue our efforts in the same manner as this past year, and hopefully to do an even better job. I hope that this Christmas season treats you and yours well and that the New Year brings health happiness and BIG FISH!!!! Very Sincerely, Tom Banyas, President-SEIFF Clicking on this icon will connect you to the SEIFF website for more information about SEIFF.

SEIFF Club Chronicle January 2016 Page 2 Upcoming Club Program By Tom Banyas, Program Chair January Club Program Our January program presenter will be the famous Todd Lanning. The meeting will be at 7 PM, Thursday, 14 January 2016, at Idaho Fish and Game Offices, 1345 Barton Road, Pocatello. These positions mean a load of fly fishing experience. Todd grew up on a Melba, Idaho farm where his grandfather taught him fly-fishing. Todd was age nine and fly-fishing stayed with him. Later he spent summers with an aunt & uncle in Hamilton, Montana fishing the Bitterroot River. He became in love with fly-fishing in the Rocky Mountains. After high school, Todd served his country with the US Marines. He found himself in the world s hot spots such as the Gulf War, Somalia, and the L. A. riots. He returned to Idaho after the service and took a job guiding for Headwater Outfitters of Ketchum, Idaho. Next he managed the Idaho Falls Sportsman s Warehouse fishing department for a few years where he was responsible for a one-million-dollar inventory. From there he moved on to South Fork Outfitters. These positions mean a load of fly-fishing experience in and knowledge of local waters. Recently, Mike Lawson hired him to work at Henry s Fork Anglers. Doing so is a dream come true for Todd and gives him detailed experience on fishing the Henry s Fork. His array of experience along with being a superb fly tier gives Todd the ability to demonstrate and suggest flies for all seasons on local waters. The South Fork and Henry s Fork are his specialty tying subjects, but so much of tying for these water carries over to other waters. So, look for a great presentation from a great fly fisherman, guide, and tier. This should be a great program. Come early to find a good seat, participate in the raffle. Todd Lanning Sincerely, Tom Banyas, President and programs Chair for the SEIFF. The SEIFF Board Members Wish You a Safe and Prosperous Demonstration Fly Tiers Needed Snake River Cutthroats, the sponsor off the annual Fly Fishing and Tying Expo in Idaho Falls (see Dates and Events), are soliciting seasoned tiers to participate as tiers at their expo on either April 22 (Friday) or April 23 (Saturday). For more information or to sign on, contact Bruce Staples at or Tom Banyas at

SEIFF Club Chronicle January 2016 Page 3 Fly of the Month-Hun Rump John Taylor, Contributor This is a John Taylor fly. John is a stalwart SEIFF member, and SEIFF board member, as well. He manages the fishing department for Ace Hardware. He is also the author of a monthly article in the Newsletter, TAYLOR HOTSPOTS. John is one of the best of the best. Not only a great fly fisherman, but a great guy. Our local club is full of folks like him. Many who don t get the notoriety and who, like John, just don t push themselves out for recognition. John is one of them. I have tried to get him to give me a pattern for the newsletter for several months and here it is. A soft hackle pattern (some of my favorites) no less. A shout out to John. Portneuf River Outfitters New Name & Ownership Larry has changed the store s name to SNAKE RIVER FLY. The location will remain the same, 257 North Main. He will continue to carry a full line of fly fishing and fly tying gear. He will also offer fly fishing classes on casting, fly tying and rod building. Larry also has plans to bring celebrity fly fisher, authors and tiers as well. He is an Idaho Falls native, but lived in Pocatello since A previous employee of Scotts Ski and Sports, he has also operated Snake River Fly from his home. He has ben involved in fly fishing for over 30 years and brings a wealth of information from working as a fishing guide, commercial fly tier and an I S U fly fishing instructor. Wow! In talking to Larry you observe his enthusiasm and love for this sport. He graciously has offered his shop for SEIFF board meetings and general membership meetings, like Roger did in the past. Also, like Roger, he has open tying at the shop on Tuesday and Thursdays..and like Roger, he brings a lot of knowledge and local information about the area. He will be accompanied from time to time by his family, his wife and a smiling son, who informed me where I could be and not be in the shop because he had staked out some special space for himself. The shop mascot is a 14-year-old Vizsla, Vladimir that is friendly and seems to fit in as though he belonged there Roger & Donna hope to spend a lot of time in Washington and Oregon where their children and grandchildren reside. They are also exploring seasonal work in the West Yellowstone or Yellowstone Park area, where he can also fish some of his favorite rivers in that fly fishing mecca. The Hun Rump! A very effective nymph that is easy to tie. This fly works year around in streams, still water and anything in between. Most fly tiers have a Hungarian partridge skin for tying soft hackles. All you need is 2-3 of the small marabou like feathers from the edge on the bottom of the skin. They will have white tips and gray on the rest of the feather. I prefer scud hooks in sizes because they are strong but any 2x strong hooks will work. After threading on your 1\8 bead in your favorite color, tie in all 3 of your feathers in with the white tips acting as the tail and the gray laying on hook shank to form the body. Just wrap your thread over the gray part to form body. Dub some light dubbing to fill space behind the bead. Not too tough to tie a bunch of these very effective nymphs. This shop will not be the same without Roger and Donna, but it should not be. It is the same place, but has a different flavor that reflects Larry s personality. It has a comfortable feeling, a feeling that it is a special place just for fly fisherman. As we bid farewell, thanks for all the memories and for the many, many years your passionate and endless support to our club. Best Fishes Roger & Donna, SEIFF

SEIFF Club Chronicle January 2016 Page 4 Casting About Tom Dial, Newsletter Editor The holiday season is upon us again. What a great time of the year. Music is great, eye candy everywhere, the children are excited, lots of community events. Also, just a great time to get away from some of the frenzy, tie a few flies, sip some great scotch perhaps read a great book from your fly fishing library. My least favorite thing, other than trying to have a vision of what to buy for my wife, is wrapping the gift(s) if I can find them. I use duct tape it is a wonderful product to use during your gift wrapping during the holidays. It adds a great deal of color to the brown paper bags I use and sometimes I add a bit of colored masking tape. She has no trouble finding her gifts under the tree. I did not put a fishing report in the newsletter, because during the winter it is the same everywhere. Midges and streamers. For more details on suggested flies, see the previous newsletter. If you have misplaced it, then we have them all available on our website. Thanks to the hard work of Darrell Brown, Past President and web master extraordinaire. Also, this month s newsletter features 2 local tiers under fly of the month. The two tiers are Roger Thomson and John Taylor. Two fine fly fishers, local patterns tied by local tiers. An extra gift to SEIFF readers this holiday season. This are is loaded with very good tiers. During this spring, I would like to feature local tiers in the Fly of the Month. I m looking for more patterns, so please contact me with your pattern so I can feature it. There will be several vacancies on the board, with at least 2 members whose terms are expiring. Tom Banyas will be leaving and myself, the editor of the Newsletter. The Board has selected a nominating committee to fill the vacancies. If any of the members are interested or know someone who might be interested, please contact Bud Smalley at , Tom Banyas at or any board member (their names and contact information is on the SEIFF website. Larry Larsen was selected to fill the balance of Roger Thompson s term. T U also will be having some leadership training classes in February so the new board members could attend which would be most helpful with the transition. The sooner we can find a new editor for the Newsletter, I would be able to help with initiating him/her during the next few months before my term ends in April Casting About, Continued Tom is also our Program s chair. Hence, SEIFF will also need to replace him in that position. I am sure Tom will continue to help the program chair with ideas and contacts. Since no meetings are held during May through August, the new chair could work with Tom this spring then have the summer to work on forthcoming programs. If you see Tom, tell him thanks for his tireless work for many years as Program Chair, then the past 4 years as President. It is not a thankless job, but it is easy to take the folks who serve you for granted. So kudos to Tom for his good work. He will be serving until April of SEIFF has made substantial progress under his presidency. We need to keep the club moving and volunteers to serve in these vacant positions. So, please step up. I have had an opportunity to visit with Larry Larsen new proprietor of Portneuf River Outfitters. The new business name will be Snake River Flies and will be located at the same address, same building, same digs as PRO. I recommend that you drop by the shop and talk to Larry. He has some great ideas and projects. He is working on bringing some top notch tiers and authors to Pocatello to do presentations at his shop. One is Kelly Gallop, who owns slide Inn on the Madison and is the author of Cripples & Spinners. If you have never been in his shop, it is worth the trip to travel to the Madison, just below Quake Lake to see his shop and his flies. He has a lot of the famous Yellowstone and Madison flies, but tied just a bit differently. They work! He is a very personable guy, great tier and a very good presenter. So stay tuned for more. When the details are firmed up, then we will get them to you in the Newsletter. Don t forget to shop for your Xmas fly fishing friends at Snake River Flies this holiday, and don t forget that ACE Hardware, Elements and our good friend and board member who works there John Taylor who can help you with some suggestions. Sportsman Warehouse is another SEIFF supporter. While you are there tell Larry, John and the folks at Sportsman merry Xmas and thank them for their support. Congratulations to Larry for being selected and agreeing to fill one of the open positions on the board. Gail and I sincerely wish every one of you and yours a wonderful Xmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year. Count your blessing to live in this wonderful place, with wonderful waters, hatches, great fly shops and tiers. May your holiday be the best of the best, may you be surrounded by those you love and those who love you.

SEIFF Club Chronicle January 2016 Page 5 Fly of the Month-Stayner Ducktail Roger Thompson, Contributor This fly is courtesy Roger Thompson, previously owner of Portneuf River Outfitters, a wonderful guy, a real supporter of SEIFF and a former board member. A beautiful fly tied by another of our local tiers. Roger and his wonderful wife Donna like this fly and fish it often. Ruel Stayner of Twin Falls, Idaho is the originator, in the 1960 s. The Stayner Ducktail has been fished effectively on all local waters, particularly still waters, and was originally fished in the Wood River area. Recipe: Hook: Dai Riki, sizes 7-8 Thread: Danville Peacock 6/0 Tail: Orange Saddle Hackle Fibers Body: Olive Chenille Rib: Medium Gold Oval Tinsel Wing: Very Symmetrical Mallard Flank Feather Hackle or legs: Orange Saddle Hackle Fibers 5. Flatten the barb of the hook. 6. Start the thread right behind the bead, lock it down by wrapping it over itself, and then spiral wrap it to the point-of-the-bend. 7. Pull off or cut off about a 1/4 segment of orange saddle hackle barbules. Tie-in the barbules so the tail length, when tied in, is about same as the hook gap. 8. Strip the rayon from the chenille to expose the thread core, tie in the core at the point of the bend of the hook. 9. Tie in the medium gold oval tinsel at the same point. Stayner Ducktail - Continued 1. Wrap the chenille forward on the hook, making each successive wrap roll of it s neighbor, so it makes a tight, snug, segmented body. Tie it off. Cut the chenille very close to the thread wraps. 2. Palmer or spiral wrap the medium gold oval tinsel forward, making about five wraps over the entire length of the hook shank. Tie it off and cut. 3. Turn the hook over so the bottom-side is up. Select about a 1/4 segment of orange saddle hackle barbules. Tie-in the barbs so the beard length is about the same as the hook gap. The beard should angle at about 45º from the hook shank. 4. Prepare the mallard flank feather this way. First select a very symmetrical (same on both sides of the vein of the feather), or balanced feather. The length should be from just behind the eye of the hook to the end of the tail. No shorter, nor no longer. Remove four or five of the barbules from each side of the stem by cutting, not pulling. When you cut, leave a short stubble on each side to help lock in the feather. I like to lay the feather in the proper position over the back of the fly/hook, holding it by just laying my fingers on top, then wrapping over the butt-end of the feather to tie-in the wing and make a streamer type head at the same time. In tying the fly, please note the proportions. Very nicely tied and photographed by Roger Thompson, thanks. We will miss you and Donna. Roger Thompson - Club Member of the Year Recipient

SEIFF Club Chronicle January 2016 Page 7 Last Minute Gift Items By Jennifer Jackson, IF&G Still fishing for some Christmas gift ideas for your family? Maybe you are hunting for that perfect Christmas gift, and just haven t found it yet. Don t panic. Just shop at the local Fish and Game office. Yep, you read that right! Fish and Game has lots of great gift ideas for the outdoors enthusiasts in your family. How about buying a gift certificate that can be used toward the purchase of licenses, tags, or permits? Attach the certificate to a box of flies or stuff it inside a pair of new wool socks, and you have a fun and useful gift any sportsperson would be thrilled to receive. Keep in mind that certificates must be redeemed at a Fish and Game office, but the great thing is that a gift certificate from Fish and Game is never the wrong size or wrong color for those on your list. For those of you who tend to wait until the last minute, gift certificates can be purchased anytime-- even on December 24! Maybe you have a wildlife watcher in the family. Both the Idaho Birding Trail Guide priced at $5.00 and the Idaho Watchable Wildlife Guide priced at $12.50 make great gifts at great prices. Both guides are filled with beautiful color pictures and a wealth of information about Idaho s wildlife and viewing areas. And, money generated from the sale of these books supports Fish and Game s nongame program. The Fish and Game office in Pocatello also has a nice selection of extraordinary pencil sketches by the late Pocatello artist, Edson Fichter. Unframed prints showcasing various wildlife species come in all sizes and start as low as $ All money generated from the purchases of the Edson Fichter prints goes toward the continual maintenance and improvements of the wonderful Edson Fichter Nature Area near Indian Hills Elementary School. It doesn t take money to remember family and friends during the holidays or to simply spend time together. It is fun and inexpensive to just get outside and enjoy Idaho s backyard! Get your kids or grandkids bundled up for an outdoor excursion and play Outdoor Bingo. You can make your own Bingo Cards out of small square pieces of poster board. Using a permanent marker and a ruler, divide the square up into equally spaced columns and rows. Maybe start off with three rows by three columns, though you can make your Bingo cards larger if you would like. In each little square on the card, place a picture or a sticker of an animal, plant, or landscape feature you might encounter on your adventure. Gift Items (Cont.) Though you can reuse pictures for each card, be sure to vary the pattern a bit so that each card is different. And, don t forget, the center square is labeled Free Space everyone gets to mark that one off. If you are handy with clipart on the Internet, these cards can be easy and fast to make on the computer! During your outing, keep an eye out for birds, wildlife tracks, deer, a creek, an icicle, an animal s burrow and mark them on your Bingo card. If you laminate the cards, you can use dry erase pens for marking the squares. That way the cards can be used multiple times. Wrap the cards up with ribbon, attach some packets of instant cocoa to enjoy when your game is over, and you have a fun stocking stuffer that promises to deliver on hours of outdoor fun and quality family time. Jennifer Jackson, Regional Conservation Educator, Idaho Department of Fish and Game 1345 Barton Road, Pocatello, Idaho 83204; (office); (cell); jennifer.jackson@idfg.idaho.gov Great DVD Gift Item- A Rocky Mountain Flyway This is a new video released this holiday season. Idaho Fish & Game helped sponsor it. It s about all the wonderful places to fly fish along Highway 20. Including Yellowstone River, Firehole River Madison, the Snake, etc. Wide Eye Productions created it, Boise owned by Tom Hadzor and Jennifer Isenhart. They both have a long history with Idaho Fish & Game as employees and contractors. Tom Skerritt narrates it, an award winning actor you may recall from A River Runs Trough it. It is a beautiful piece with some great photography, great fish too. Here s link to the website: If you have a chance watch the trailer. It is fantastic. On the website are listed the times, dates and TV stations that are broadcasting it. I believe the purchase price is $19.99, but Costco has them for $12.99 while they last. Nicely done and a fun holiday gift.
