His knowledge and ability to teach others were a prerequisite to establishing his fly fishing schools/ clinics which have become a priority for anglers seeking the ultimate from their still water angling experiences. For the past thirty years Denny Rickards has had an opportunity to fish and guide anglers over some of the most challenging trophy trout waters in the Western United States. His simplistic approach and techniques on presentation have accounted for browns over 20 pounds, cutthroats to 15 pounds and rainbows in excess of 19 pounds. Over 250 days a year are spent doing what he loves best: guiding, writing, tying flies, conducting fly fishing schools, and field testing and developing tackle manufacturer s products. His newly developed Crystal Creek Series graphite fly rods by Diamondback are being compared to the top rods in the industry. Meet the Speaker for Dinner All members are invited to meet and have dinner with this month s speaker. Meet us at Art s Bar and Grill, dinner will be at 4:00 pm. The food is great and the prices are very reasonable - each member pays for their own meal and any drinks. Art s Bar & Grill 3357 University Avenue, Riverside

2 President s Message From Jerry Searcy This is the time of year when some of us, including myself, need a gentle reminder to pay our Deep Creek Fly Fishers annual dues. When I think about it each year, weighing the cost of membership with the value of belonging to the club, it is clear it is money well spent. Where else can I receive the knowledge and expertise of quality speakers and guides, attend evenings with others who are willing to share their knowledge of fly fishing, go on outings several times per year with fellow anglers at a tremendous savings and, if I choose, learn to build rods or tie flies. So, if you haven t done so already, do what I m going to do this month and pay the 2019 dues. By the time you read this message, the Southwest Council FFI Fly Fishing Faire will have been held in Glendale. I want to thank those members who volunteered to help with the Deep Creek Fly Fishers booth at the Faire. Jill Wagner, Mike Stuhl, Wally Meyers, Hugh Huntley, Gary Applebee and Greg La Polla, thank you for your service and dedication. Next month is our Member s Night when we call on our own to share with the club their flyfishing experiences or knowledge. If you have something you would like to talk about, please let Clark Stevens know so he can put you on the list of presenters. November is when we will be electing officers for Positions to be filled are: 1 st and 2 nd Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. If you are interested in placing your name in nomination, please let me or Clark Stevens know. Don t forget to make your reservations for the upcoming Holiday Banquet. It will be a truly super event you don t want to miss. Hope to see you on the stream! 6 Trout in the Classroom Middle School: Karen McColeman from Terrace Hills Middle School in Grand Terrace. And Rozalia Trammell from Clement Middle School in Redlands. High School: Scott Hanson from Murrieta Mesa High School in Murrieta. After a break, Dannette Lasater of Manuel Real Elementary, and Don Lasater of Sierra Vista Elementary Perris discussed the set up of the aquarium and trouble shooting. The Deep Creek Fly fishers Trout in the Classroom season is off to a flying start. We held our annual Teachers Training class for new teachers on September 22. The class began with a discussion of what is Trout in the Classroom, with a slide show by Doug Spieske. Bill Reeves followed with a discussion with visuals of the life cycle of the rainbow trout. Julia Swanson of the California of Fish and Wildlife then spoke about a trout's diet, habitat, and watershed health. Next came the focus groups. This is the favorite of our students where we have breakout groups where the students have the opportunity to speak with teachers who are experienced in teaching Trout in the Classroom at the same grade level that the prospective teachers will be teaching. These groups were lead by the following: Grade K-2: Zana Kleveno from Highgrove Elementary in Highgrove Grade 3-6: Danette Lasater from Manuel L. Real Elementary in Perris. Stephanie Plemons from Valley of Enchantment Elementary in Crestline. And Keith Armbruster from Temescal Valley Elementary in Corona. Hillary Grez then discussed the many program requirements of the CDFW and also its resources. Jerry Searcy then discussed the all important preparation for the trout release and the culmination of the TIC program. He also showed an outstanding professionally made video of a trout release of the 2nd grade class of Zana Kleveno -Highgrove Elementary. Several teachers who do their own trout releases discussed their experiences. Also a very experienced teacher, whom is also a DCFF member, shared his. The class concluded with the presentation of the certificates to the 15 graduates as well as completing a class evaluation. Other Important Upcoming Dates: Egg delivery October 17 A new class for trained teachers to learn to do their own trout releases on Saturday, November 17, at DCFF clubhouse. Call Hillary for details. Written by Doug Spieske A BIG THANKS to all the volunteers that continue to make this happen!!!!! Dave Allred, Mike Butler, George Plescher, Bill Reeves, Jerry Searcy, and Doug Spieske 6

7 Fishing for Steelhead January 10 to 15, 2019 Robin Johnson s catch 2018 It is that time of year to start thinking about the annual steelhead trip. This year we are going up on January 10th and coming home on January 15th. We will be staying again at the Indian Creek Lodge. Now for those of you new to steelhead fishing. It is not like trout fishing where you can catch several fish, 20 fish to 50 fish, in a day. The steelhead didn t get the nick-name a fish of a thousand casts for no reason. Steelhead fishing isn t like trout fishing. We fish when it is cloudy and sometimes even in the rain. The steelhead, like most fish, like cloudy weather and rainy weather which gets them moving up the river. If the river doesn t get any rain for several days the steelhead stay in a pool holding or waiting for the river to rise from rain. They are moving up river to spawn. They will eat but, not like a trout eats. If you catch one or a few you did good. But, if you have ever caught a steelhead you ll know why we go fishing for them. They jump and run like crazy!! Some of us have started to learn to spey cast. Spey casting is a lot of fun but not the most effective. Nymphing from a boat is more effective. But the cost for a guide is $500 a day with a tip at the end of the day. That is why most of us have learned to fish from shore either nymphing or swinging flies. GUIDES: If you want to drift instead of wade fish, there are a few places to hire a guide. The cost for a guide is now around $500 per day. With a guide you can use their equipment. If you use your own it is recommended that you use a 7 weight or 8 weight. You can use a 6 weight (very light) but it s not recommended. Most of us tie some flies or stop off at The Fly Shop in Redding on the way up for some flies that we might have missed. The Indian Creek Lodge has a guide that works out of the lodge. Ben, Joel or Mary will be glad to give you his contact number. The Indian Creek Lodge phone number is (530) , their website is Andrew Harris from Confluence Outfitters, has five guides available. Here is the Confluence Outfitters website: Their phone number is (530) In the past Andrew would offer a discount for hiring three boats in the same day. If you want to try someone else there is The Fly Shop in Redding. They have guides for the Trinity River also, Their phone number is (800) CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE 7

8 Fishing for Steelhead January 10 to 15, 2019 Continued LODGING: I will be staying upstairs in room #9 again. This room has a full kitchen. That means we can cook breakfast and dinner with plenty of room to cook our meals. The room also has a full size refrigerator and stove. It also has a dining room table and living room. The Lodge also has Kitchenettes available for three people to share the cost. A kitchenette has a queen in the living room and a queen and twin in the other room. They also have regular rooms, with a queen bed in the room, or a king bed only, and a queen and twin in a room. The Indian Creek Lodge phone number is (530) , their website is Tell them you are with Deep Creek Fly Fishers. They try to keep us in the same area. Obviously if you can t stay all five nights the cost is cheaper. Everyone books his or her own room. We split the cost for food (about $25 for four breakfasts and dinners). Because some of us hire a guide, everyone will be responsible for his or her lunch. You can keep the fixings for lunch in the refrigerator. I bring water and Costco tea for everyone, just help yourself. On Thursday night we eat out, Indian Creek Lodge has a great café with outstanding food. Last year the cafe was closed so we went to the Golf course and they have outstanding food also. We ate at 6:00 pm, so we leave Indian Creek Lodge at 5:30 pm. food, room, and stopping at The Fly Shop in Redding. The Fly Shop can be a big variable. This year several of us are flying in to Sacramento. We found flight deals on Southwestern Airlines for under $70 one way. We found out we would spend ten hours driving up to the Lodge and spent about $120 on gas. Flight time is 1 3/4 hours. If you are a rewards member the cost of the flight is less. Plus we get a half day of fishing on Thursday and Tuesday. We rent a car at the airport. When you book your flight it will ask if you need a car. A couple of our guys have told me they are looking for someone to share a boat with. If you call me I ll have you talk to that person. I ll have a sign up sheet at the October and November meetings. I try to get a list of who is coming so I know how much food to buy. If you sign up I ll be sending you updates as time gets closer to the steelhead fishing dates. I ll also send out notices with flies that have worked in the past. If you have any questions glapplebee@gmail.com or call me, Gary Applebee (909) Last year the cost for me was around $700. That covered gas up there (spilt with one other person), 8

11 SON OF CONEHEAD ORIGINATOR Scott Sanchez FLY OF THE MONTH Translated by CARL WUEBBEN In some situations, the biggest fly in your box is not the best, and the smallest might be the most appetizing. Case in point is a fish s disposition when it comes to food selectivity. It s one of those facets that I have to admit I don t consider often when I m on the water. Sure, there are plenty of productive chuck-and-chance fly patterns out there, and a few work with dependable regularity. Fish can be opportunistic omnivores, and yet at other times, prefer something specific that replicates bait; size, shape, color or action (or a mix of all four). This becomes critical to success. Figuring out the trigger can be one of the most enjoyable aspects of fishing. Learning through experience what works and what doesn t is a rewarding endeavor that far too many anglers don t take the chance to encounter. PATTERN HOOK DAI-PIKI 930 Mustad 34007, size 2 to 8, bent to a bend back shape THREAD Red size 6/0 (140 denier) HEAD Nickel 3/16 to 1/4 inch conehead with recessed eyes WING White Bucktail, Glow-in-the-Dark Flashabou, Pearl Crystal Flash, Tan Bucktail EYES Orange 2mm adhesive eyes stuck into the eye bores on conehead GLUE Cyanoacrylate (Zap-a-Gap or Super Glue) HOW TO TIE Bend the hook shank in the opposite direction of the hook gap about one-third of the length back from the hook eye. Then slip the cone on the hook and mount in your vise upside down. Keep the conehead toward the back of the hook and then add a little bit of Zap-a-Gap on the hook shank from the eye to where the hook was bent (about midshank). Start your thread in behind the eye and working rearward make a nice tight thread base to where you bent the hook, and back to the eyelet. Slip the cone forward to make sure it fits snugly over the thread base. When it does, make a small head in front of the cone, whip-finish, cut the thread and apply some Zap-a-Gap to the small thread head. Reattach the thread to the hook shank behind the cone. Add a sparse wing of bucktail and flash behind the cone. Then whip finish and cut the thread, add some head cement to the thread and base of the wing. (Length of wing should be almost 1 1/2 the hook size.) Adhere the adhesive eyes in the eye sockets of the conehead. TIE UP A DOZEN OR TWO AND GO FISHING But remember to practice C.P.R. 12 Dam work on West Fork of the San Gabriel River The West Fork of the San Gabriel River is scheduled to have work done behind the Cogswell dam. The plan is to drain the reservoir behind Cogswell dam and remove the silt that has built up over the years. They will be trucking the sand down Highway 39. The LA County will put up a temporary dam and put pipes to redirect the water around the dam. The LA County says this will not affect the flows downstream from Cogswell dam. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has been doing surveys on the West Fork during the summer to establish a base line for the stream. They have done snorkel surveys to determine the substrate and the fish in the stream. The DFW has broken the stream down into habitat units of riffle, flat water, pools, and runs. Each unit is measured for length, width, and depth. The units to be snorkeled are picked by a computer with a random selection program. When DFW is looking under the water they also look at the fish. They classify the fish by size, 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12, and bigger than 12 inches. They found a few fish that were bigger than twelve inches, and a healthy population of six to eight inches. If you have fished the West Fork recently, then you know there are a lot of four inch fish in the stream. They have also found carp, sun fish, bass and even a gold fish from someone s aquarium. This means that the stream is producing a healthy population of fish. Even after the low flows from the last few years of drought. The DFW is also doing e-fishing surveys to determine the population in a reach. This is also done by sampling random sections that a computer has picked. This is done by setting up a set distance. Usually, 500 meters with a temporary block net above and below to get a controlled area. Then they e-fish the area by making three passes and netting the fish. Each pass has to have a dimensioning number of fish. They will weight and measure the fish to determine class size. They also look for things like fungus or other abnormal things to see the health of the fish. Sometimes they find fish with fins distorted or chewed on by invasive fish. With this base line the DFW will be monitoring the stream while the LA County does the work behind the dam to make sure the fish have adequate flows to live in. They will also be taking other data like temperatures and clarity of the water during the course of the work to make sure the water doesn t heat up too much and cloud up with algae and other invasive vegetation. When will we know the results of this survey? Probably not until next spring at the earliest. In the spring, summer, and fall they collect data. Then during the winter they work up the data. Since the West Fork is in the San Gabriel Monument area and all the public recreation that happens on the West Fork, there are no shortage of projects they have to monitor in the Monument area. After this study the DFW will have other field work they have to do on the East Fork and North Fork of the San Gabriel rivers. Most of us haven t heard of this project. But it s time someone tells about the good they are doing. I have heard people talk smack about the DFW not doing enough for our fisheries. But I have worked with the DFW a lot. They are a hard bunch of working people. They want us to fish and work hard at making that happen. 12
