2 President s Message From Clark Stevens Yet another new year is before us as we begin this year of Many of us have made New Year s resolutions regarding a variety of topics and one of them I am sure is that we have all made is a resolution to spend more time fishing on our favorite streams, lakes and coastal waterways here in Southern California and to other great destinations in the coming year. I would like to take this opportunity to challenge each member of the Deep Creek Fly Fishers club to think of and put into action ways to leave a legacy as parents, grandparents and as avid fly fishers that have a desire to fly fish and leave a desire in another person s heart and mind. I recently read an article in The Fly Fisherman magazine entitled Lefty Kreh s Legacy. Sadly, there was not much about what he had accomplished as a renown world class fly fisherman, but it contained information regarding his possessions that he left behind and how his family members could benefit monetarily from their sale, etc. That got me to thinking as a father, grandfather and fly fisher in process about what have I accomplished in my lifetime that could be shared in my passing, both in spoken and written word. Being the President of the Deep Creek Fly Fishers this year I hope that our club members will be encouraged to participate in our club as well as maybe mentoring a son, grandchild or club member in the art of fly fishing, during the coming year! I want to challenge each of us this year to put ourselves out there to do what I just mentioned. Don t put it off like some of us do regarding doing our taxes each year, but com- Continue President s Newsletter on page Board of Directors President: 1st Vice President: 2nd Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Newsletter: Trout in the Classroom: Clark Stevens president@deepcreekflyfishers.org vacant vp1@deepcreekflyfishers.org vacant vp2@deepcreekflyfishers.org Jill Wagner secretary@deepcreekflyfishers.org George Plescher treasurer@deepcreekflyfishers.org Roberta Ross newsletter@deepcreekflyfishers.org Doug Spieske tic@deepcreekflyfishers.org Conservation: Jerry Searcy conservtion@deepcreekflyfishers.org Membership: Education: Mike Stuhl membership@deepcreekflyfishers.org vacant education@deepcreekflyfishers.org Outings: Opportunity: Drawing Web Master: Club Store: First Past President: Second Past President: Mike Telles outings@deepcreekflyfishers.org Bob Williams opportunity@deepcreekflyfishers.org Greg LaPolla webmaster@deepcreekflyfishers.org Sean Robbins clubstore@deepcreekflyfishers.org Jerry Searcy pastpresident@deepcreekflyfishers.org Bill Reeves pastpastpresident@deepcreekflyfishers.org SWCIFFF Greg LaPolla Representative: swciff@deepcreekflyfishers.org 2

3 Continued President s message Wear the Logo mit to a plan of action to pass it on or pass it forward whoever you want to look at it! Our hobby and great pleasure of fly fishing is to be shared with others, so that the next generation can enjoy our sport and that it will not be a forgotten sport that others in the future just read about in books. So, with that said I want to invite our members to help in volunteering for DCFF positions still available at this time. We have positions for: 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President and our Education Chair that need filling for Also, needed are volunteers to help with special events like the White Elephant Auction (June 6/26/19); others offering to help with Trout in the Classroom (See Doug Spieske); Members Night on (11/20/19) help to plan ahead to share some of your fly fishing adventures with the club; and our Holiday Banquet (12/04/19) needs help to prepare months before and assist the evening of the banquet. All of us enjoy these special events each year, but less than five or ten percent of our club membership have been assisting us in past years. We need members to sign up for our education activities opportunities and experience outing and trips to best benefit from their club membership and improvement as fly fishers in the coming year! 5 GREEN BUTT SKUNK GARREN WOOD/DAN CALLAGHAN Translated by CARL WUEBBEN FLY OF THE MONTH The Sierra Bright Dot is a Fore and Aft pattern. The pattern has been used primarily on the eastside of the Southern sierra for many years going back to the 1950 s.it has remained popular as an attractor pattern yet has not extended its popularity beyond the Sierra. The Fore and Aft pattern goes back to the early 1900 s as its origins have been disputed between the French and the English. Jean-Paul Puguegnot s book, French fishing flies, cites a doctor Juge who created Fore and Aft patterns in His Taquine pattern consists of a red thread body with grey hackles. Horace Brown of England also laid claim to designing Fore and Aft flies in the 1930 s. Either way, the pattern eventually made its way to the Sierra Nevada and became a major pattern for the region. Trent Pridemore wrote about the Sierra Bright Dot in his article Trout Flies Unique to California (California Fly Fisher July/August 2008). He indicates that the Bright of Bright Dot is in honor of Dorothy Bright, the wife of a mine owner at Convict Lake, also known as Monte Diablo Lake at the time. The Bright s owned the mining village while it was attacked by 6 escaped prisoners in This episode led to the name change of the lake. It is unknown who originated the Sierra Bright Dot pattern but it has been a preferred pattern for high elevation lakes and streams of the Sierra, particularly good with Golden Trout. PATTERN HOOKS TMC 100 #14-18 THREAD Danville Black 6/0 (140 denier) BODY Red floss TAIL Golden Pheasant Tippets HACKLE Grizzly HOW TO TIE Start your thread in at about mid shank then attach Golden Pheasant Tippets at the bend of the hook for a tail. Even the tippets so that the markings align. The tail length should be equal to the shank length. Wrap the tags of the tippets up to the ¾ position and clip off the rest. Tie in a grizzly hackle with the fibers about a gap and a ¼ to 1 ½ long by its butt end but don t forget to remove the fluff then wrap 4-5 turns forward with close wraps, secure and trim the tag end. Clip 2 strands of red floss and position it in at about three eyelets from the eye and wrap the floss back to the hackle and forward again to where you started tying in your floss. Try to maintain an even layer of floss. Secure and clip off the tag end. Tie in another grizzly hackle that has about 2 gaps long fibers /remove the fluff and tie in by the butt end right where your thread is now, clip off tag end and your thread and hackle should be a little bit into the floss. Bring your thread forward to just behind the eyelet, wrap the hackle forward with close wraps 4 or 5 will do, secure and clip the tag end, whip finish and you re done. You can put a very small drop of head cement if you want. TIE UP A DOZEN OR TWO AND GO FISHING But remember to practice C.P.R. 7 STEELHEAD on the Trinity River January 2019 Written by Gary Applebee The weather forecast for the week that we were to be up on the Trinity River was for rain all five days. Perfect for steelhead fishing. As long as it didn t rain a lot and blown out the river. Steve and I had a guide for Friday morning and the guide texted us on Tuesday saying the river was blown out and chocolate brown. I knew from past years that the Trinity clears up in half a day. Sure enough it was just a little off color for Friday fishing. This year we had ten people go on the Steelhead trip, Jill Wagner, Kerry Murphy, Mike Mahaffery, Mike Brown, Robin Johnson, Skip Davis, John King, Steve Castles, Bob Williams, and Gary Applebee. After five years of driving ten and a half hours up to Douglas City, six of us decided to fly up on Southwest Airlines. We got into the Sacramento Airport at about 7 in the morning. We got our rental cars and drove the two hours to Redding to The Fly Shop. After we got the few things we needed for fishing, we went shopping for food. We got to the Indian Creek Lodge at 12:30pm and unloaded our food and suitcases. Then a few of us went fishing until 4:30 pm. John King There were more fish in the river than in years past. Most of us had a guide for Friday and all did well catching steelhead. There were a few inch fish caught as well as several inch steelhead. Some of us even caught a few half pounders, a steelhead from inches. John King caught five or six steelhead on Friday. Most of everyone else caught a couple of steelhead. Kerry Murphy Skip Davis 7

8 STEEL HEAD on the Trinity River On Saturday, the weather cleared up to just being cloudy. Half of our group had guides. The guides spread out on the river with one going up river and the others going down river. It didn t seem to matter much whether you were up river or down river both caught fish. Some of us fished from shore wading in the river and looking for the fish. The nice thing about drifting with a guide is you can cover so much more water than fishing from shore and reach spots you can t wade to. But, there is nothing like hooking a steelhead on a leader you built yourself and catching a steelhead on a fly you tied. January 2019 On Sunday, most of us fished from shore. A couple had guides and both groups caught fish. Skip caught the biggest at 29 inches. Those of us fishing from shore were still looking for the fish. The weather was bright and sunny without a cloud in the sky. But, Steve finally caught a nice steelhead while wading in the Douglas City Campground. Skip and John went to Redding on Sunday night to fish the Lower Sac on Monday. Gary Applebee Monday was a little cloudy in the morning. Robin and Bob had a guide. Steve, Mike, and I fished from shore. In the afternoon we went back to the Douglas City Campground because that was where we had the most action from shore. I hooked a steelhead and got him to within three feet before he shook off. On Tuesday Steve and I stayed to fish the morning. The rest went to Sacramento to sight see. It was raining and cold. Perfect weather for steelhead fishing. Steve and I fished until 10:30 in the rain. I hooked a steelhead and got him to the shore. We got to the airport an hour and a half before our flight home. Damn, we could have fished for another hour. Bob Williams Robin Johnson 8

10 New Zealand Mud snails I was working with the CADFW last week. We got to talking about the New Zealand Mud snail being found on Bear Creek in the San Bernardino Mountains. A crew from the USGS did an entomology survey at the confluence of Bear Creek and the Santa Ana River. The lab found mud snails in the survey. They are pretty sure they came down from Big Bear Lake. Big Bear Lake has had mud snails in it for years. I told the DFW person that I was talking to I was surprised it took so long to infect Bear Creek. Not because Big Bear Lake is so far away from the Confluence, but because Bear Creek gets quite a few fishermen. The fishermen come from all over Southern California. Most don t really clean their gear. It used to be that way to clean your waders and boots was with industrial strength 409. It would tear your gear up. So a lot of people figured they would just let their gear sit out for a few days and dry out. They didn t realize that mud snails could live for months without water. Then they would go fishing after a couple of weeks thinking it was ok. As we were talking the DFW biologist was talking about all the ways they clean their gear when they go from one stream to the next stream. All the usual ways with freezing their boots and waders overnight. To having a couple of sets that they can change out every two or three days while they are freezing the others. They have a chemical that kills invasive species too. I don t think we can buy it. But, she mentioned saltwater. I thought saltwater? I ve never heard of this. So I asked how many teaspoons or tablespoons do I use. She said the mud snails are freshwater creatures and saltwater will kill them. But, you have to use rock salt. You know the kind we used to use to make homemade ice cream. You use five cups to a gallon of water. Then soak and scrub your gear. Let it dry, then rinse and your gear is good to go to the next stream. I used to have three or four different wading boots for different waters. One for waters infected, one for the Kern River, one for the San Bernardino Mountains and one for everywhere else. That s what happens when you re paranoid about spreading invasive species around. Then two or three of the boots wore out at the same time. I decide that that was to expensive. Now it looks like I ll be buying some bags of rock salt. Way cheaper than buying wading boots. Now, you guys are all smarter than me. I ll bet none of you had four pair of wading boots. So you ll have to figure out what to do with the salty water. I don t think throwing on your neighbors lawn is the answer. Written by Gary Applebee 10
