2 President s Message This is my farewell letter as I will be moving to Redding California on November 4th. I found my dream house and location to spend the rest of time that I have left devoted to fly fishing in one of the premier locations on earth. Redding has the second sunniest days in the nation after Tucson. My rear property line is the BLM Corridor on the Lower Sac and a 10 minute walk to the river. The put-in on the Lower Sac is 15 minutes away for the drift boat. The Trinity is an hour to the lodge in Douglas city. The McCloud river, Fall River, Pit River, Hat Creek and the Upper Sac are an hour to an hour and half away. The Ahjumawi Lave Springs State Park requires a power boat to get in and the fishing pressure is very low. I will be at the February Steelhead outing with the boat. I will also put a couple of trips on the silent auction for anywhere with no cost boarding at the house..your choice of where and the time of year to fish. After the winners at the auction do their thing, then anyone is welcome to come Redding to fish with lodging at my house. My telephone number is Redding is I am keeping the Cell phone: COME JOIN THE FUN IF INTERSTED CONTACT A BOARD MEMBER OPEN Positions for 2017 Club Board Elected Officers: Vice President and Secretary Committee Chairman: Newsletter, Education, and Opportunity Drawing At the upcoming November meeting the nominations will be presented for Election 2016 Club Officers & Directors President: Vice President: Secretary: Treasurer: Ken Rhodes president@deepcreekflyfishers.org Art Santore vp@deepcreekflyfishers.org secretary@deepcreekflyfishers.org George Plescher treasurer@deepcreekflyfishers.org Conservation: Gary Applebee conservtion@deepcreekflyfishers.org Membership: Education: Outings: Trout in the Classroom: Bob Yanta membership@deepcreekflyfishers.org education@deepcreekflyfishers.org Mike Telles outings@deepcreekflyfishers.org Doug Spieske tic@deepcreekflyfishers.org Opportunity: Drawing Web Master: Newsletter: Club Store: Rick Proulx opportunity@deepcreekflyfishers.org Greg LaPolla webmaster@deepcreekflyfishers.org Roberta Ross newsletter@deepcreekflyfishers.org Sean Robbins clubstore@deepcreekflyfishers.org SWCIFFF Robin Johnson Representative: Gary Applebee swciff@deepcreekflyfishers.org Past President: Rob Wilcox pastpresident@deepcreekflyfishers.org Past Past President: Robin Johnson pastpastpresident@deepcreekflyfishers.org 2

3 Maggie Merriman Margaret Maggie Merriman, Fly Fishing Lady of the West passed away Sept. 30, She was 80 years old. Maggie was born to Harold Merriman and Catherine Sinnott on Sept. 26, 1936, in Pasadena, California. Both parents were excellent fly fishers. Maggie and her sister, Kathleen, learned from an early age how to fish and tie flies during time spent on the North Umpqua River in Oregon, the Gallatin River, and the streams within Yellowstone National Park. In 1958, Maggie graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in fine arts. After extensive world traveling with her close friend Patsy Drummond Decker, she returned to the states and attended the Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles where she won several awards. She acquired her teaching certificate from USC and taught in Germany for one year. Maggie then traveled throughout Europe before settling in Sausalito, California, where she worked in wholesale furniture and art galleries, and produced modern art. As one of America s premiere fly fishing instructors, Maggie began her long career by teaching fly casting and fly fishing techniques at the Nine Quarter Circle Ranch in the early 1970s. In 1978, she founded Maggie Merriman Fly Fishing Schools, which focused on woman anglers, and operated in MT, OR, WA, WY, NV, and CA. She excelled at teaching the art of proper casting techniques. In 1981, Maggie worked as a design consultant for a fly rod manufacturer, developing her signature series fly rod for women. A year later, she designed and manufactured the first women s fishing vest, and launched a series of fishing accessories under her own label. She preformed casting demonstrations, slide shows and lectures to fishing clubs, sport shows, and taught classes at the annual national Federation Fly Fishers Conclave. As a member of the Outdoor Writers of America, Maggie wrote for Fly Fishing Heritage, as well as authored a regular column on women s issues for Fly Fisher, FFF s national publication. Between 1995 and 1998 she created and coordinated the FFF National Women s Educational Fly Fishing Program. The Federation honored her in 1995 as Woman of the Year, and again in 2003 as one of the Legends of Fly Fishing. In 2004, the International Women Fly Fishers awarded her the Shining Star In the 1980s she met Professor Paul Brown, her partner in life. They spent years fishing, teaching, and traveling together until his passing in Maggie continued her fly fishing schools in West Yellowstone (summer) and Huntington Beach, California, (winter) until her death. She is considered a pioneer in the sport and an advocate for women s fly fishing. She was recently quoted as saying, There are many new chapters to be written and I am highly encouraged as I look around at all the women involved in our sport today. What Maggie loved most about her sport was that fly fishing is a pathway to observing nature, that it is often enough to sit on the riverbank, feel the clean clear water moving around your legs and to be connected to mother earth. For the thousands of anglers she taught, the joy she brought to them through fishing, and to her fishing buddies around the globe, she will be greatly missed. Maggie is survived by her sister Kathy Merriman Malone formerly of Bozeman, Montana and now Encino, California; her nieces and nephew, Molly and Kevin Nave of Spokane, Washington, Clint and Kristi Campbell of Bozeman, Montana, Wendy and Dennis Dougherty of Spokane, Washington; Great nieces and nephews, Sean, Luke, Claire, Catherine, Ashley, Stephanie, Ian, Anna, Campbell, Daniel, Erin, and Stephen. A celebration of Maggie s life will be held streamside next summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Casting For Recovery, a breast cancer fly fishing retreat, at castingforrecovery.org Reproduced from Bozeman Daily Chronicle 3

Trout in the Classroom On Saturday September 24,DCF volunteers and our hosts Claire Ingel and Hillary Grez of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, led our annual Trout In the Classroom Teacher Training Class. Due to a scheduling conflict at our clubhouse, this program was held at the CDFW regional office in Ontario for the first time. This venue proved to be our best yet, with up to date visual aids, a good sized conference room as well as office sized rooms well suited to small groups. The latter worked well with our popular focus groups where our new TIC teachers conferenced with our seasoned teachers who have a lot of experience teaching TIC at the same grade levels the "newbies" soon will. Those of us who have been doing these classes for years all felt that this was overall the best class we have given and our student evaluations were very positive. Many thanks to our DCF volunteers who make all this possible----jerry Searcy, Bill Reeves, Mike Butler, George Plescher, and Doug Spieske. Also thanks to our experienced TIC teachers who shared their knowledge with 15 of their new TIC colleagues------cheryl Johnson, Danette Laster, Stephanie Plemons, Jessica Mazakas, Rozallia Trammel, Laura Hanson, and Scott Hanson. Note: There will be eggs delivered to all certified TIC teachers who have applied 0n October 19. Any teacher who missed this class---other classes will be given in Newport Beach on November 5,2016 as well on October 15 in San Diego ---for info call jennifer.obrien@wildlife.ca.gov 6

7 Fly Tying PARKING PERMITS REQUIRED FOR OUR MEETING NIGHTS Through the summer we have been having a fly tying night on the second Thursday of every month. We get together to tie flies for outings that we are going on and to just fill our fly boxes. Sometimes we share interesting patterns we have found. If you have a hard time setting down to replenish your fly box this is a good way to start filling that box. There is no real structure just a group of guys and gals tying flies and sharing stories. Bring whatever you want to drink and join in on the fun. At the end of the night we collect one fly from everyone to put in the Holiday Banquet. We meet the second Thursday of the month. The next meeting will be on October 13, 2016 at 7pm. Since in November our club meeting is the third Wednesday we have decided not to meet that month. But we will be starting up again next year. 7 Be sure to ask for a 2016 Parking Permit when attending the monthly meetings. Per City ordinance, all vehicles parked in parking lots at Fairmount Park from dusk until dawn, without a permit will be ticketed. There is limited parking available in front of our clubhouse. Overflow parking is available directly across the street at Fairmont Park Golf Course. DCFF 2017 Membership Drive It s that time of the year when our Club Membership Drive begins. The Membership Drive starts October 1st and runs through February 28th. Membership applications are available at the monthly meetings or on-line on the club web site at under the heading About Us. Also be sure to down load, sign, and turn in the Release Waiver of Liability. The Club Dues remains the same. I am looking forward to seeing you at the next meeting. Bob Yanta, Membership In order for the club to continue providing the great speakers for our meetings, fly fishing, casting, fly tying, rod building, and entomology classes, and organize club outings we hope everyone that attends our meetings, or visits our website to read this newsletter regularly, will complete the application form and bring it with your payment to the next meeting. Or, simply mail them to: Deep Creek Fly P.O. Box 8203, Redlands CA Thanks again for renewing your membership with Deep Creek Fly Fishers. We hope everyone has a great 2017!

8 Steelhead Trip 2017 Lance Patterson s steelhead It s that time again to go fishing for steelhead on the Trinity River. The dates are; arriving on Thursday, February 2, 2017 and leaving on Tuesday, February 7, We will be staying again at the Indian Creek Lodge like last year. LODGING: I will be staying in room #9 again. This room has a full kitchen. That means we can cook breakfast and dinner with plenty of room to cook our meals. The room has a full size refrigerator and stove. It also has a dining room table and living room. The Lodge also has Kitchenettes available for three people to share the cost. A kitchenette has a queen in the living room and a queen and twin in the other room. They also have regular rooms, with a queen bed in the room, or a king bed only, and a queen and twin in a room. The Indian Creek Lodge phone number is (530) , their website is Tell them you are with Deep Creek Fly Fishers. Last year they tried to keep us in the same area. Obviously if you can t stay all five nights the cost is cheaper. Everyone books his or her own room. We split the cost for food (about $25 for four breakfasts and dinners). Everyone is responsible for his or her lunch. On Thursday night we eat out, Indian Creek Lodge has a great café with outstanding food with reasonable prices. Last year the total cost for me was around $700. That covered gas up there (spilt with one other person), food, room, class, and stopping at The Fly Shop in Redding. The Fly Shop can be a big variable. CLASS: Andrew Harris will be presenting a class on Friday, February 3rd. Andrew developed a class that covers nymph fishing, Spey casting, some of the access points, and the selection of flies to use. The class is four hours long in a classroom setting. Lunch will be provided with the class. Afterwards we go to the river and fish for two or three hours with Andrew working with everyone. Last year the cost of the class, with tip included, was $72 per person for eight people. If there are less than eight taking the class, the cost will be adjusted. So for seven people it will be $ I will need to know by the Oct. 26, 2016 Deep Creek meeting if you plan on attending and I ll need the class money by Nov. 16, The same as all outings, you will prepay for your spot in the class, if you can t make it you have to find your replacement. We fish with a six or eight weight rod, a floating line, and a straight fluorocarbon leader of ten to twelve pound. GUIDES: If you want to drift instead of wade fish, Andrew has five guides available. Here is the Confluence Outfitters website: Their phone number is (530) There is no discount for hiring three boats in the same day like in years past. If you want to try someone else there is The Redding Fly Shop. They have guides for the Trinity River also, Their phone number is (800) ANOTHER OPTION: There is a raft company in Lewiston. It is Old Bridge Rafting (530) They will rent a three person inflatable raft for fly fishing, a person fishing in the front, one fishing in the back and the other rows. This is a 13 foot raft with a fishing frame. Scott, the owner, said you could drift about five miles in a day. He will show you how to row the raft, anchor and launch it. He can put in at a spot where you will finish at the Indian Creek Lodge. Scott will also take you to one of the other launch ramps and meet you at the take out at the end of the day. They also have other rafts for one and two people. Bob Yanta at Eagle Canyon Lake Eagle Canyon Last year we went to Eagle Canyon Lakes to fish two private lakes with some trophy fish in it (4-15 pounders). The price is $125 each for only eight anglers (this is a club special). The price is a sliding scale that goes up if there are less than eight people. We leave Indian Creek Lodge at 6am on Tuesday Feb. 7 th, to drive to Red Bluff then to Eagle Canyon Lakes. We will be fishing Eagle Canyon from 8:30am to 5:30pm. You will have to add a night to the trip and stay in Red Bluff. I ll be collecting the money for this also at the Nov. 18 th meeting. As always this is first come first serve. We will be fishing on February 7 th and coming home February 8 th. In 1934 the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp (Duck Stamp) was authorized. Ninety-eight cents of every duck stamp dollar goes to the protection of wetlands and wildlife habitat. This ensures the protection of wildlife (and often fishing) will be protected for generations to come. The stamp, besides being used to authorize the hunting of migratory birds, also allows entry into national wildlife refuges. In 1949, the art contest was begun to allow artists to compete for the prestige to see their art appear on the new stamp. For the past thirty-three years, the Federal Duck Stamp Exhibition Tour has been displayed at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. Unfortunately, this year the museum is unable to display the exhibit. But fortunately, this year, the San Bernardino County Fish and Game Commission has partnered with Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucamonga to display this years exhibit. The Stamp Art will be on display in the Fine Gun Room upstairs at Bass Pro Shops on 19 and 20 November, 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. The winning artist will be in attendance both days. I encourage you to support this exhibit to assure we can have it return in the future. You can do some Christmas shopping and support Bass Pro Shops, one of Deep Creek s major sponsors.
