1 VOLUME 53 APRIL 2018 NUMBER 04 APRIL MEETING Thursday, April 19, Farmhouse Rest Wet Fly / Social Gathering: Dinner / General Meeting: 6:00PM 7:00PM From the President: By: Tim Cooley Well I can tell spring is here, with itchy eyes, and all the other nasal issues that come along with the arrival of the pollen, and increased use of Benadryl. At least there is fishing. It was great seeing everyone that turned out for the Chiromomid Capers, thanks to Robin Larue for organizing this event. A lot of fun was had by everyone that attended. I was able to capture the sunrise on Pass Lake in the following photo, it was a beautiful day. I was able to get a weekend fishing at Grandy Lake up on Baker Lake road in Concrete, WA. I had my fishing pal with me and he watches my strike indicator to allow me to doze off and rest. Got to get him trained to keep the line tight though. We managed to be there for a midge hatch in the middle of snow, sleet, rain and sunshine. You would have thought they were working for the post office. We did manage to catch a few small ones On March 31 st we had the annual April Fools outing, put on by the FFF Board. It was a great turn out, and great food was served. Mark s famous Road Kill Chili (its legal you know) was awesome and tasted good too. Ryan grilled Hot dogs which were very good, and not boiled to beyond taste. Richard Raisler was able to make good use of the fish census equipment provided by the club, never ceases to amaze me with some of the ingenuity of our club members.
2 We have a vacancy on our board with the resignation of the Vice president Terry Abrams. Thank you to Terry for his service to the FFF board. The Board will be making a recommendation to the Club to advance Bill Keeler, our Secretary to Vice President, and until we fill the secretary position. The duties of secretary will be cover by our treasurer Mark Gilmore in the short term. If you are interested in begin part of the board, contact Ryan Johnson, to get yourself in the running. We hope a recommendation by this month s meeting, if not by the May meeting. See you on the water! This Months Presentation: By: Terry Abrams Molly started teaching fly-casting back in the 80 s after she left the Midwest and landed in Utah. In 2000, Molly and her family moved to Livingston Montana where she began a 15-year guiding/outfitting career. During this time, Molly started Tie The Knot Fly Fishing, became an outfitter and Master Certified Casting Instructor through the International Federation of Fly Fishers now the Fly Fishers International. Another move took her further west to Birch Bay Washington. A Two-Handed fly rod is now her go to method in the PNW. Molly is currently on the Casting Board of Governors and Board of Directors of the FFI. While visiting the Fidalgo Fly Fishers, Molly will present a program on her book titled 25 Best Off-the- Beaten Path Montana Fly Fishing Streams by Stonefly Press (2017 Bronze Award winner through the Independent Publisher Book Award). Photos will take you to Montana, while Molly will discuss strategies for small stream fishing and visit seven of the 25 streams covered in the book. A book signing will follow the program. During the wet fly hour Molly will be offering casting tips and video tips with her indoor fly rod and i- pad.
3 Interviewed for Western Washington University: By: Danny Beatty Tom Fulk Interviewed for Western Washington University Special Collections Oral History Program On the morning of March 22, 2018, Tom Fulk and Danny Beatty drove to Western Washington University (WWU) in Bellingham where Tamara Belts, Manager of Special Collections, interviewed Tom for the Fly Fishing Oral Histories. The WWU Fly Fishing Collection was started about twelve years ago by Paul (retired WWU Provost) and Mary Ann Ford. Their vision was to save as much of the history and personality of Northwest Fly Fishing as possible. This history includes an extensive book collection, manuscripts held in hanging files, unique memorabilia such as fly-fishing equipment and fly plates and oral histories. An Advisory Group of Fly Fishers has been meeting on a regular basis to develop criteria for the collection. An example of the criteria as it pertains to Tom Fulk s accomplishment to NW Fly Fishing is in these words from Guidelines for Evaluating Oral History Candidates. Purpose: The purpose of the oral history program is to preserve, in their own words, the recollections of participants to the history and culture of fly fishing in the Pacific Northwest. A series of requirements follow and the one that fits in with Tom s accomplishments follows: Recognized fly-rod builder, especially handcrafted bamboo fly rods. Tamara Belts, Manager of WWU Special Collections had a sheet of questions ready for Tom s Interview. These questions got underway with his fishing experiences as a youth in Michigan and if fly fishing may have been a family tradition. Tom brought out his interest in wood working which had an interesting sidelight while he was serving his military enlistment in the Navy. Tamara Belts and Tom Fulk at WWU From there his interview continued on to joining the Fidalgo Fly Fishers. Since the key to his being interviewed has to do with how he became interested in building bamboo fly rods, the extent of his explanations got more detailed. Tamara did not leave out Tom s interest in building wooden boats. She even had some questions from one of the Fly Fishing Collection s Advisory Group members related to some boat design refinements Tom had made. Tom has written and published three books on bamboo rod building. He had previously donated the first two books to Special Collections. On this trip to WWU Tom donated the third book and a very special four strip Bamboo Fly Rod. The interview will be transposed to a written document with funds previously donated by the Fidalgo Fly Fishers. Tom Fulk is the fifth present, past of former Fidalgo Member to be interviewed for the Oral History Program. When his interview in placed online, I will make sure that club members are notified.
