The lakes will soon be losing most of their pleasure boaters, leaving the conditions a little more favorable for fishing. Take advantage of it. The weather is still comfortable and the fish will be using the warm, but cooling water temperatures to feed and fatten themselves for the coming cold season. Some of the year s best fishing/catching can be done between now and first ice. Make some memories! 2 Fishtalk Tim Kempen has been muskie fishing with limited success but his friends have been catching them. Glenn Furst spoke on having a good time catching fish at the tournament. Mike Miller fished Okauchee and found some bluegills using the Berkeley fish fry s dropshotting the deep weed edges. Fished Nagawicka for 16 hrs. and caught bass and rock bass off deep weed edges. Fished Nagawicka two weeks ago for bass and northern fishing the deeper weed edges. Larry Wehrheim caught some nice Lake Michigan fish up to 34 on a blue and silver spoon. Duane Marcell fished with Rick Kelly on Pewaukee Lake for short bass and one rock bass on 7 power worms in camo. Bob Graham fished Pewaukee Lake with his sons and had short walleyes and one legal largemouth. Jim Dabisch fished with his grandson and had bass up to 19 and crappies to 11 on Pewaukee Lake. Gene Champeau fished Lake Mendota for multiple fish including pike to 34 and a 15 whitebass. Gene has been fishing Nagawicka with a bobber and wacky worm in 5 ft of water with great success on the northwest side of the lake in the early morning off a point. Tried for some gills and had the best bite under the piers with gills to 8. Fished Lake Michigan for a 36 salmon and 31 lake trout in 125 ft of water. Rick Kelly had two crappies up to 9.5 on the Dear John crappie scrub on Pewaukee Lake. Fished Pewaukee Lake with Duane Marcell for short bass on 4 power worm in camo color. Fished Wind Lake for two bass up to 15 on camo 4 power worm. Larry and Karen O Leske had 30 catfish from 10 to 29 on the Fox River Depere. Brady Ohlin speaks on panfishing rivers and lakes Brady Ohlin from Pardeeville, WI. came down with his parents to speak to our club about pan fishing on rivers and lakes. He started a new guiding service this spring and is using his dad s Lund boat for guiding. Brady started to show us some sonar pictures from his Lowrance fishfinder. He compared some weed patches and then looked with some down imaging pictures to look at some trees or stumps in the water. The pan fish and crappies like to stay around the wood areas. His Lowrance mapping Lakemaster chip has a gps with an icon to tell him what type of fish are in the area. It also has cribs marked on the maps. He will use his navionics maps on his smart phone to mark some spots for summer open water and ice fishing in the winter. The fish on the top of the sonar will be crappies and the perch and bluegills will be suspended towards the bottom. Walleyes will also be suspended to find the cooler water. Fish deep weed edges and drop-offs in the summer to find some pan fish. Look for trees in the rivers and fish those area s for crappies. Anchor ten feet away and set the slip bobber for two or three feet down. Try to catch the top fish so you don t spook the fish. Brady likes to put a dab of supper glue on the hook eye to keep the hook more horizontal. Crappies will spawn at 75 degrees. Brady will start using a dark colored lure and change lures to find what fish will be biting. Brady explained how a high preasure low barameter will cause the fishing to slow down as the fish aren t as active and can be sluggish to catch. Wait for the barometer to start rising and the fishing will be better. Look for bluegills under piers. Healthy weeds will draw baitfish and nice bluegill or perch. Start to fish bluegills with crappie minnows to catch bigger fish. The larger perch will be in deeper water. He will drop shot on the deeper weed lines in the summer as that is the cooler water. When catching small perch you need to move to find some larger perch. The perch seem to be smaller than Minnesota lakes. (continue next page)

3 Brady gave us some spots to fish in castle Rock and Pettenwell lakes. The pan fish will be in bays with weeds and the crappies will be around stumps. There is a bridge on castle Rock that will hold walleyes in 15 to 20 ft of water and smallmouth bass waiting for dead bait fish to float by to eat. He also likes the river channels with stumps to catch some crappies. Brady also showed us some spots on Pettenwell and will fish the river channel deeper areas. The bluegills will be under piers and the crappies will be mixed in with the walleyes. There are also many catfish in the current towards the river. Give Brady a call at for fishing tips or a guide trip. His is brady@ohlinguideservice.com. Check him out on facebook at Fishtalk Anthony Duchenko caught some catfish and a bluegill in a pond. Glenn Furst fished with Mike Miller on Okauchee and had success with the Keitech 4 paddletail grub in pumpkin green and caught multi species till 3am. Fished Pewaukee with Jim Dabisch and they caught bass to 18 on sliders and power worms. Larry Pestor fished with Mike Miller and they had success on spinner baits and the worm with occasional top water. Larry fished Monkey Island for four hours with no success. After a wind shift to west he had 5 fish in 15 min. with smallmouth, largemouth and rock bass. Larry said watch for the locals after the bar closes as they don t turn there lights on. Steve Mau has fished Silver Lake with Dale & Sue Bordon for largemouth bass and Sue had a largemouth on a wacky worm testing Steve s G Loomis rod. Dick Hunjadi fished Sand Lake for perch and pencil reeds for crappies, walleyes and bluegills with beetle spins after dark for 20 minutes. Ken Sawicki fished Sand Lake at night and had great success catching multi species with smallmouth to 18.5, crappies to and walleyes to 20. Larry Wehrheim had one rainbow on Lake Michigan before a storm and had a fun ride back to launch. Ken Mahuta had some success fishing Okauchee weed lines for bluegills. Had no success searching for perch on Beaver Dam and caught some bluegills on the weed lines on Pewaukee Lake. Mark Krmpotich caught a 22.5 largemouth on Pewaukee Lake with 1/8 oz bullet weight with a red bead with a number 3 hook with a darker blue fleck 7 power worm. Reported that some nice northern are being caught by trolling the west shore of Lake Nagawicka. Guest Rob Newman was on Lake Michigan trolling and 5 Coho pulling spoons to 22. Gene Champeau had nice bluegills on Nagawicka averaging 8 plus inches on the south shore where deep water comes up in the weeds. Fished Pewaukee for muskie and had one follow to surface on a one once spinner bait. Fished Mendota in Madison for catfish to 31 with 20 lb powerpro and 10 lb leader with a small hook. He fishes the east shore launch and has had success fishing that weed line for multi species. He has had great success fishing wacky worms shallow for largemouth and smallmouth bass. Guest Dave Dawson caught a pike that had markings of a walleye on Sand Lake in Rusk County. He thanked our club for our donation to plant some muskies in Okauchee Lake. Jim Gilles was testing his new Hummingbird locators on Little Muskego. Dan Domask has fished up north for walleyes and had a 42 muskie on Papoose Lake on a 6 paddle tail using 5 weeks of vacation. Trae James fished Pike Lake with limited success. Rick Kelly fished Lake Denoon on Aug. 4 and had bass up to 18.5 on a 6 pumpkinseed lizard. Fished Wind Lake two times for bass up to 17 and lost a nice bass at boat side with a 6 Pumpkinseed lizard. Had one 9 bluegill in 15 ft of water on a pc of crawler.

4 Tom Newbauer Speaks on new Fishing Tips Tom is a member of the Midwest Shooters Cutting Edge Outdoors crew with Dan Busch and John Laimon. He spoke at our August meeting on some newer fishing tips. Tom suggested at one of our last meetings that he didn t use a fluorocarbon leader on his braid fishing line. He was fishing with his son on Oconomowoc and found some largemouth. His son was using monofilament line and out fished him like 12 fish to one. So he now uses a fluorocarbon leader on his braid fishing line. Tom plugged the Midwest Shooters Cutting Edge radio show and spoke about John Laimon s medical condition. The Okauchee members wish for John to have a speedy recovery. Tom talked about the Larry Smith show and how they were wacky rigging tubes to catch some bass. Tom suggested to wacky rig a Kalins Jerk minnow so it looks like a wounded minnow. He has caught some bass using this method. Tom had another tip from Ron Johnson who was fishing with the top two hundred bass anglers on Lake Oneida in New York. He went down to six lb line and used a black ¼ oz Jig with marabou and added a pc of black senko. Ron took eight place catching smallmouth bass using this jig. Tom bought some ¼ oz marabou jigs and added a black ring worm to imitate a leech. He suggested hopping this up the deep drop-off and bring it back to the shallows. He caught largemouth, smallmouth and a walleye using this jig. On Okauchee and Nagawicka these jigs will get bit off from northern pike. He has added a steel leader to catch some Muskies using the black lure. Tom will check the northern pike when cleaning and find many crawfish in most of them. Tom spoke on lifetime warranty for the St Croix fishing rods. Tom had a rod that was 25 years old and needed the reel mount screw replaced. They ended repairing the rod for $30 which $20 used to be the amount to ship the rod. Tom suggested reviewing the new limited warranties on the rods when purchasing a new rod. Tom heard from Randy Belko at the Midwest Shooters shop that fishing for walleye on Winnebago has been tough this summer. The perch fishing has also been slower than past years. Tom uses the Buck Perry suggestion that the fish are either shallow deep or somewhere in between. Tom likes this comment and uses it on a regular basis on the cutting edge radio show. Tom also likes to go back to older lures like the Kelly worm. He suggests a barrel swivel and a small split shot. Throw it out and retrieve slowly over the weeds. In 1980 Tom won a tournament using crank baits. Now days he very rarely throws a crank bait. He received dozens of free crank baits from Bagley. He then called the sales person to get a lure price list as he wanted some bango lures. They sent him about 10 dozen bango lures for free. He still has Bagley crank baits that are not being used today. Tom s next tip was to put garlic scent on all your plastic worms. The fish seem to like this scent even on your panfish plastics. When using spinner baits? Tom likes white skirts with gold blades or black skirts with orange blades. Big willow leaf in front and smaller willow leaf behind. He likes a half once jig and likes double willow leaf to go deep and Colorado in front to go shallower. A single Colorado blade for very shallow. Always use a trailer hook and a Zoom white split tail plastic added to main hook. Tom likes a chartreuse and white for a third option. Tom was asked about the pike on Big Muskego Lake for size. They are getting bigger but most of the pike are still longer but skinny. Tom concluded that we are a great club by sharing fishing information. Tom has been at clubs that will share very little information with other members. Tune in to Midwest Shooters Cutting Edge Outdoors at 1250 on am dial or FM from 6:00am to 8:00am on Saturday s. You can download the podcast after the shows and listen any time. Give Tom a call on the show at or ceoguys@yahoo.com for fishing or hunting information.

7 Annual Club Picnic July30, 2016 It was a great day for a picnic at Rotary Park in Menominee Falls. Eighty degrees, light breeze and lots of sun. Sixty people participated in the club picnic enjoying good food, great raffle prizes and just a great day to be out. Special thanks to Trae James for coordinating our annual picnic, Thank you to all club members who gave their time and energy to make the picnic a success. Special thank you to Steve Plochocki, Rich Fenger, Lee Larson and Bob Pelowski who slaved over the hot coals preparing food. Thanks to the businesses that donated to the raffle. They are (in no particular order), Musky Mike s Bait & Tackle, Cabelas, Dick Smiths, I Know A Girl LLC, Get It Done Painting LLC & Larry and Karen O Leske. Special thanks to Barb Pelowski for her donation of the fancy hand made boxes at this years and past raffles. Please remember to support them as they support us. It was a great time. Check out some of the winners on our picnic pictures on the next page. Little Butte Des Morts Outing by Trae James The weather for our Little Butte Des Morts outing was not very good. Only four club members braved the storms, high winds and heavy rains. Jim Gilles caught perch up to 7 ½ and a 14 smallmouth. Rick Kelly had perch to 7. Jim Dabisch had three smallmouth bass up to 15 and a 16 largemouth throwing a white spinner bait. He also had a muskie bite off that white spinner bait. His partner Gene Dahl had one 15 smallie. Not bad, considering the conditions. Salmon Slammin' on Lake Michigan Check out some of these tips for the September 11, 2016 OFC Lake Michigan Outing. Lake Michigan salmon fishing also reaches its peak during the fall season, though for different reasons. During fall, Chinook and Coho start to migrate in from miles offshore to spawn in tributary streams. Chinook are the first to arrive, typically spawning from mid-september into early October, while Coho and Brown trout begin spawning in early October and continue to end of that month. Generally thought of as deep-water fish that only owners of large boats can target, Lake Michigan salmon become accessible to virtually everyone during September and October and can easily be caught from shore, from piers or from shallower near-shore waters. "Fall salmon fishing here is just unbelievable," said Brad Eggold of the Wisconsin DNR. "Though these fish aren't quite as large as coastal salmon, they're still big - with many in the 20-pound range. And, since their stream migration distance is limited by dams, they are concentrated into a smaller area than in other parts of the country, which translates into very high harvest rates." While salmon anglers use a variety of lures and presentations, yarn flies seem to be popular with wading or shore fishermen (in the steams) while dodger fly rigs and J-plugs are used by fishermen on the lake. Both resident and non-residents are free to try both techniques by virtue of the two-day trout/salmon stamp (sport license) offered by the Wisconsin DNR. Prospective anglers are encouraged to visit the DNR website for more information. Eggold cited a number of river and river mouth areas as fall salmon hotspots, including the Menomonee and Milwaukee Rivers in Milwaukee County; the Pike River in Kenosha County and the Root River in Racine County. Further to the north, the Sheboygan River in Sheboygan County, Manitowoc River in Manitowoc County, the Kewaunee River in Kewaunee County, and the Menominee River in Marinette County also attract widespread attention from anglers.
