4 Page 4 HVC INTERNSHIP PROGRAM ENVIRONMENT DEPARTMENT Lena Nicholson & Tamlyn Botel Mike Ohata (HVC), Juanita Quewezanze (CNA), Tanya Hollo (DFO), Interns Tamlyn Botel and Lena Nicholson and Kristy Henkes (CNA). Downloading data for a research project The Citxw Nlaka pamux Assembly and Highland Valley Copper have a very successful Internship Program which gives youth an opportunity to gain valuable work experience in the mining industry. We have 2 new interns who started in the Environment Department, Lena Nicholson from Cook s Ferry and Tamlyn Botel from Nooaitch. We will be expanding this program to other departments at the mine. Please watch for future internship opportunities in Administration, Health and Safety and Water and Tailings. Lena Nicholson: Henle, my name is Lena Nicholson. I am Nlaka pamux, from Cooks Ferry, and grew up in Spences Bridge. Over the years, I ve lived in different places, Ontario, New Mexico (where I pursued Fine Arts post-secondary studies) and at the coast. I recently returned to my community and finally feel like I am where I belong. I enjoy being out on the land, harvesting our traditional foods and medicines; as well as fishing in the Fraser and Thompson Rivers. In May I began working as a First Nations Intern at Highland Valley Copper in the Environment department. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the reclamation side of mining operations, and also to use some of the skills I gained through the Environmental Technician training (sponsored by the CNA trust) I took last spring in Spences Bridge. This includes working with water sampling, an acoustic fish tagging program with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, in addition to as surveys of waterfowl, blue-birds and night-hawks. Tamlyn Botel: Gnawed Lake Rainbow Trout Acoustical Tagging Gnawed Lake is a relatively shallow body of water (approximately no more than 3 meters deep) with an area of 13.7 ha located north of the Highmont East pit at the Teck-Highland Valley Copper. Annually the lake is stocked with four strains of rainbow trout, Pennask Lake, Carp Lake, Blackwater River and Fraser Valley. These strains are commonplace throughout BC and play a large role in recreational fisheries. Due to Gnawed Lake s lack of natural inlets and outlets, as well as its isolation from public use the area provides a unique opportunity for a controlled study on the behavior of the trout. This summer the Department of Fisheries and Oceans with the aid of two HVC environmental interns plan to do just that using acoustical tagging technology.
5 Continued... Page 5 Acoustic tag technology allows for individual fish to be tracked real-time in the lake creating data on which parts of the lake are used by certain strains of fish and at what time of day; furthermore it may give insight into interactions between different fish strains. The tags are approximately 1 inch in length, cylindrical in shape and are inserted on the ventral side of this fish just anterior to the pelvic girdle. Each tag is programmed with its own specific acoustical stamp which is detected by nine hydrophones located at various locations in the lake. Using the time it takes for the unique signal to reach each hydrophone the approximate location of the fish can be determined. A habitat assessment of the lake bottom will also be conducted using underwater cameras to determine the substrate type and vegetation composition. In addition, temperature and oxygen levels will be monitored at various depths in the lake to give a detailed view of the habitat conditions and how it changes over the season. Correlating fish movement and position in the lake with respect to the habitat type found at the lake bottom will give insight into any habitat preference the fish may have. Furthermore, it could give insights into whether different strains prefer different locations in the lake. Acoustical tagging also gives an interesting opportunity to track individual fish, this may lead to discoveries in how a single fish utilizes the lake and if they have distinct home ranges. No matter what the outcome, from exciting revelations on fish behaviour to an increase in rainbow trout data, there will definitely be new information discovered about this popular freshwater species.
