7 Appendix About Us Recognizing need and taking action, Africycle discovered that many people in Africa could not afford available forms of transportation; mini bus, taxi or least of all a private vehicle. Therefore the alternative most people turn to is a bicycle. Simple and cheap to operate, bicycles are an effective way to save significant amounts of time. By providing access to appropriate, affordable bicycles; Africycle is using the bicycle as a tool for change in Malawi, Africa. Our Mission By empowering and engaging people; Africycle is working to create sustained, responsible development in Africa. Stimulated by the support of Canadians, Africycle's model of development utilizes a holistic strategy to benefit communities as a collective, leveraging the greatest outcome from all resources - money, time, and people. History The vision for Africycle grew out of a recognition of need and a willingness to do something about it. Experiencing the need for bicycle infrastructure in Malawi, a team of people from Uxbridge, Ontario gathered in 2005 to begin the process of making change. What developed was a pilot project (Malawi Bike Project) that delivered 180 used Canadian bicycles to Malawi via shipping container, to beneficiaries in Malawi. The results from this project were encouraging and truly impactful, compelling those involved to delve deeper into how real change could be achieved. Through a continuing learning process, Africycle was formed as a registered Canadian charity to actively engage Canadians in creating economic and social opportunities for people in Malawi.

8 Appendix continued The Need for Volunteers Bikes are collected throughout Ontario and are then brought to our storage facility in Uxbridge. Once enough bikes are collected, the bikes are then packed into a 40 foot shipping container and sent by ocean to a port on the coast of Africa. From the port, the container is then trucked the rest of the way to its final destination. Volunteers are critical to the shipment of bicycles from Canada to Malawi. Every bike that gets loaded into the shipping container is efficiently folded, loaded, and documented. Students can volunteer by spending half a day at our storage facility in Uxbridge, Ontario, where they will be working with the bikes hands-on to remove pedals, wheels, and tie the bikes together to get ready for shipment. Students can familiarize themselves with the packing process by watching the video below. Can Students Earn Community Involvement Hours for Volunteering at Africycle? Yes! Students can earn their community involvement hours by helping out at our bicycle packing events. Many students in Durham Region have earned their hours with Africycle. Some USS graduates have earned paid summer positions working with Africycle through the summer.
