2 OUR RACING INDUSTRY The Queensland racing industry plays an important economic and social role, enhancing both individual and community wellbeing. There is an average of more than four thoroughbred, harness or greyhound race meetings held each day in this state; providing employment and entertainment for Queensland residents and visitors alike. 3 AT A GLANCE 132 Racing Clubs 1,541 Race Meetings 12,331 Races 20,012 Racing Club Members 847,833 Attendances The racing industry generates more than $1.2 billion in value added contribution to Queensland. Its economic activities create roles for close to 42,000 participants and sustains more than 9,500 full time equivalent jobs. However due to the presence of many part-time, casual and contractor roles, the actual number of individuals employed in the industry is much higher. Economic & Social Impact Report Highlights 03

There are 1,684 people in Queensland involved in breeding racehorses and greyhounds, with more than 86% operating in regional Queensland. Nearly 75% of all breeding related expenditure occurs in four Queensland regions. The Darling Downs - Maranoa (23.7%), Logan Beaudesert (21.2%), Toowoomba (14.5%) and the Ipswich (13.8%) regions are the most active breeding areas in the State. + Owners provide much of the capital outlay and day-to-day funding for the production of racehorses and greyhounds. There are more than 21,900 owners of racehorses and greyhounds in Queensland - 76% of which are in regional parts of the state. Overall, more than 80% of the expenditure on training activities occurs in regional areas of the state. Regionally, Gold Coast (15.7%), Sunshine Coast (10.7%) and Logan- Beaudesert (10.3%) make up the largest training areas outside of greater Brisbane (19.6%). + Trainers play the vital role of preparing racehorses and greyhounds for racing. Additionally, they also employ a large number of skilled and unskilled individuals to assist in the training activities. There are more than 1,800 trainers of racehorses and greyhounds in Queensland. The Darling Downs-Maranoa region is home to the largest proportion of thoroughbred trainers (11%) while the Ipswich region hosts the largest proportion of harness (35%) and greyhound (26%) trainers. + More than 7,600 people provide important volunteer support to the racing industry in Queensland. Volunteers assume key roles at many racing clubs, including administration, raceday hospitality and committee roles as well as assisting trainers and breeders in their operations. 7 RACING AND OUR COMMUNITIES The Queensland racing industry plays an important role in the development and preservation of social and community benefits throughout rural, regional and metropolitan areas of the state. This contribution to community social benefit enhances both individual and community wellbeing throughout Queensland. Through a number of case studies, the social and community benefits delivered by the racing industry in Queensland were highlighted. These benefits include: + The Greyhound Adoption Program finding homes for 318 retired greyhounds in 2016/17 + Fundraising efforts by Queensland s reinswomen who raised over $50,000 for the Women s Cancer Foundation as part of the Team Teal Queensland campaign Bring together family and friends for a social experience + The history, community and tourism benefits of the iconic Birdsville Races and their long term partnership with the Royal Flying Doctor Service + Engaging junior participation in the sport of mini trotting to facilitate and encourage sportsmanship, friendships and education about caring for horses + The creation of community partnerships for the annual Mt Garnet Races and Rodeo - delivering community pride, volunteerism and opportunities for family participation COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WITH RACING QUEENSLAND 4.8 Support businesses in the local economy The survey results highlighted the following positive initiatives highlighted by clubs: + Over 490 community organisations or charities are assisted financially by racing club + Over 333 community organisations share the racing club facilities and resources + Close to 21,000 people hold racing club memberships whilst just under 7,700 people provide volunteer time and services to racing clubs and participants + The three codes of racing in Queensland are very proactive in engaging with families and many cup days and themed events provide a strong link to the community. Over the last decade racing clubs have increasingly developed activities and facilities that enable families to enjoy a social day at the races. A social impact survey asked clubs how much they believed racing in their town or city has the ability to engage with the community from a social cohesion, education and business perspective.
