Newsletter #24 How to access the promotional tools To find all the past Newsletters, videos and pictures, log on to the following address: The different files and folder will then be listed, to open a folder or to download a file, click on it. Important Notice If your ball s bladder bursts, replace it, then contact Pierre-Julien Hamel (pjhamel@kinball.ca), but make sure that you keep all the pieces of the broken one. In order to honour the warranty, it is very important that you return the broken one to Kin-Ball Canada. Program Summary In the next week and a half, you will receive a phone call from Pierre-Julien in order to assess the results of the program for its first year of existence. Please take time to prepare this phone call as you will be asked to comment on your degree of satisfaction about the resources, the follow-up for the material and the general way the program was managed. We would like to thank you for your interest in the program and will send you more information regarding next Fall s training sessions as well as how the program will will run next year.

Objective of the week: Hitting the ball and giving it an effect (Curve & Parabolic hits) This week s objective is a special one to conclude the first year of existence of the program. It is designed to teach your participants how to put some effect in the ball as they hit in order to fool the teams in defence in a spectacular way. These effects are not easy to master and it might take many shots before your participants see results in their execution. You have already seen how to put a downward effect in hits in Newsletter # 21 (the drop). This week we are proposing two other hits with effect: The Curve This effect is the easiest to execute but is not so easy to master. It can be used in various situations but it is most commonly used in two situations: near a wall or between two defensive players. Near a wall: by using the curve, you will fool the players of the defending team into thinking that the ball is heading out of bounds but because of the effect, the ball stays inside the court, which might surprise the defending players. (See the image)

Between two defensive players: by using the curve hit between two players, the ball will pass by the closest one and when the effect will appear, it is going to curve away from the second one who thought he could recover it. (See the images) The execution: To execute a curve ball, you can refer to your KIN-BALL sport Instruction Manual on page 19. Technical key points: - The impact of the arms with the ball has to happen in the middle of the ball. The motion of the arms must be circular and the arms must continue their circular motion after the impact. The side the ball will curve is the side of the body on which the one on which the hands were at the beginning of the hit.

The Parabolic Hit This effect is the hardest to execute and the hardest to master. It is spectacular but is not the most useful one. When the parabolic hit is well executed, the teams in defence will think that the ball is going to be a downward hit. In fact if you look in your KIN-BALL Official Rules manual at page 14 you will see the following image representing the trajectory of a parabolic hit. Why isn t the parabolic hit a downward angle hit? In the rule book, if you look at the definition of a downward angle hit, you can read the following at page 12: c) Trajectory: A part of the ball s trajectory must have an upward or straight line from the point of serve. As you can see, it is not specified if this part of the ball trajectory must be at the beginning or the end of the hit, meaning that a parabolic hit is accepted. The execution: To execute the curve hit, you can refer to your KIN-BALL sport Instruction Manual on page 21. Technical key points: - The impact of the arms with the ball has to happen in the middle of the ball. - The motion of the arms before the impact must be parallel to the ground. - The motion of the arms after the impact must be going downward.

You can see from the images below how the effect changes the ball trajectory in order to bring it from a downward angle to an upward or flat angle. These images might not be clear enough so we would like to suggest that you go to our website in order to see this sequence in a short film which can be downloaded from the resources. To get it, simply follow the instructions that are on page 1. You will then find short videos showing the Curve and Parabolic hit.

Modified games In order to encourage your participants to use these techniques during game time, we suggest you proceed with this modified game no matter how old your participants are. Of course before asking your participants to execute the effects hits, we suggest that you explain in details the different motions and that you let them experience them with the ball before you start playing with them. You can also show them the little videos so they have an idea of what the final result should be. In this modified game, we suggest that you give a bonus point to a team each time a player executes a parabolic hit or a curve whether he scores or not. At this moment, some players will probably have trouble hitting the ball with the appropriate trajectory because it s not easy to integrate the motion of the arms while hitting. At this point you will probably be whistling more downward angle hit and out of bounds faults that you would normally. After playing this way for a couple of minutes, you can then put more emphasis on one of the technical key points of each effect such as the trajectory of the hit, the place where the hands end up and the moment they choose to execute the hits. By playing this way, the team that executes this skill the most often will get more points and will be more involved in the game than the other teams. If you are using this game, to avoid always having the same team attacked over and over, you have to make sure that the teams are balanced and you could reset the score every two minutes. We suggest this modified game for players of all ages.

Game of the week The Monster Truck: First of all, you will have to place the participants in a circle around you and ask them to lie on their back. Then one by one, you will simply go around and roll over them with the ball. As you do, you can hit the ball with your hands with more or less strength. When you do so, make sure the ball is on their belly and not on their face. For your special students you can give a super hit such as shown on the second picture. In order to dose the appropriate strength with which you want to hit the ball, we suggest that you ask one of your colleagues to do it on you so you ll have an idea of how strong you can hit it. This newsletter is the last one for the season and we would like to thank the following people for supporting us in the realization of the program. First of all, we would like to thank the following teachers and schools for welcoming us in their gymnasium for the training sessions: Cheryl Aylward Lorne Middle School, New Brunswick Gino Ruffo Sacred Heart Catholic School, Ontario Mary-Lou Buckle Cunard Junior High School, Nova Scotia Christy Thorsteinson Port Colborne High School, Ontario Second, we would like to thank the Kin-Ball Canada Master Instructors who help us in giving those training session: Philip Drouin Guillaume St-Arnaud Armel Pineau

Finally we would like to thank the Regional Managers and other responsible from the JUMPSTART Foundation who made this program possible: Diane Dupuis Regional Manager for Quebec Harry Bell Regional Manager for Ontario Charles Woodford Regional Manager for Maritimes Glenn McLean Regional Manager for Western Provinces Dan Howlet Director Operations and Community Programming Dan Thompson General Manager of the JUMPSTART Foundation Thank you very much for your interest in the program, please note that,as said on the first page, you will be contacted in the next weeks in order to get your opinion on the program and gather your comments. You will also be contacted shortly to prepare next Fall s training sessions. Pierre-Julien Hamel General Manager Kin-Ball Canada pjhamel@kin-ball.ca info@kin-ball.com
