4 RONALD TEX CAUTHEN was born in Muleshoe, Texas and grew up near Sweetwater, Texas on his grandfather s farm. As a teenager he broke wild horses before taking a job at the San Angelo Texas racetrack. He began on the racetrack accompanying racehorses to New Orleans at age 15, and he raced in the Midwest until 1952 when he was drafted into the Army and trained as a meteorologist. When Tex returned to civilian life he attended the blacksmith program at Michigan State University, and he soon became a highly respected racetrack farrier. Tex was elected to the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in its 1993 inaugural class. In 1959, Tex married Myra Bischoff, an owner and trainer. Their first son, Steve, was born in 1960, then their second son, Doug, at which point the Cauthens bought a farm in Walton, Kentucky where their third son, Kerry, was born. Steve won the 1978 Triple Crown aboard Harbor View s Affirmed as a teenager and later rode extensively in Europe; Steve is also a member of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Doug is president of Doug Cauthen Thoroughbred Management LLC, located in Lexington, and Kerry is managing partner of Four Star Sales, a Lexington-based consignment company. SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES Dr. David Horohov is Chair of the University of Kentucky Department of Veterinary Science and Director of the Gluck Equine Research Center. His research program focuses on the identification and characterization of equine cytokines and their role in protective and pathologic immune responses. His research group has cloned, sequenced, and expressed a number of cytokine genes from the horse and developed assays for their detection. Current research focuses on the developing immune response of foals and how it relates to their susceptibility to infection. Dr. Thomas Tobin is a Professor at the Gluck Equine Research Center. Since 2004, he has focused on the synthesis and certification of reference standards and internal standards for equine therapeutic medication regulation. Some of his research accomplishments include writing Drugs and the Performance Horse and publishing the plasma threshold for Lasix; introducing ELISA tests to horseracing; patented Diclazuril as a prevention/treatment for Equine Protozoal Myelitis; and proposing a unique probabilistic mechanism for the Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome (MRLS). Dr. R.F. (Ric) Redden is a lifelong horseman, farrier, and veterinarian. His shoeing career began in the early 1960s and it has made a profound impact on his medical career. Redden graduated from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1974 with distinguished honors in equine medicine and surgery. His career consists of nine years international race track practice and exclusive equine podiatry practice since Redden and his wife, Nancy, organized and hosted 20 Bluegrass Laminitis Symposiums in Louisville, KY. He has organized podiatry seminars in 22 other countries throughout the world, and continues to share his knowledge and experience through in-depth equine podiatry courses, lectures, and workshops. He has developed a number of specialty foot products and treatment concepts for NANRIC designed to enhance the healing environment for several career and life threatening syndromes.
5 Mr. Hans Albrecht is a West Coast native who trained in farriery at The Pacific Farrier School in the late 1980s and thereafter taught farriery at CAL Poly Pomona University for a number of years. He has been active nationally and internationally, having lectured, consulted, and shod horses to win widely throughout the United States and also in Ireland and England, including lecturing in German at the Hanover University Veterinary School and shoeing horses to win in Dubai, Doha, and elsewhere. Since the mid-1990s he has been based in Central Kentucky. Dr. Raul Bras grew up in Puerto Rico, showing and breeding Paso Finos. He graduated from Ross University Veterinary School in 2005, completing his clinical year at Auburn. Bras was then a surgery intern at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital where he stayed on in the podiatry department and later became a Certified Journeyman Farrier of the American Farriers Association. Bras practices throughout the Americas and Europe and is committed to the bettering of veterinary-farrier relationships. He is active in AAEP, NEAEP, AAPF, AFA, and other industry associations. In 2015 he was inducted into the International Equine Veterinarian Hall of Fame, honoring veterinarians who have made contributions to proper hoof care for horses. Mr. Michael Savoldi is Professor Emeritus and Resident Farrier at the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center and Professor of Farrier Science, Animal & Veterinary Science, California State Polytechnic University. He was also chair of the American Farrier s Association Equine Research Committee ( ) and named American Farrier s Association educator of the year in He is an internationally known author and researcher and is currently the director of the Equine Research Center in Shandon, California. Dr. Pedro De Pedro has been an Equine Internal Medicine practitioner in Lexington for more than eight years. In fall 2016, he joined the faculty at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine where he teaches Large Animal (Equine) Internal Medicine. He is working with research groups in different areas focusing on performance horses. He serves as a veterinary consultant for equine non-profit programs in Lexington and travels to the area frequently to work with a selection of clients and for data collection. Mr. Sonny Broadus grew up in the deep South and has worked with horses since he was 16 years old. He was introduced to farriery by Rip Kennedy working with Quarter Horses. From there he went to Show Horses and then to Harness Racing in New Jersey where he crossed paths with Irish farrier Tim McCarthy who showed him how a farrier best uses fire, using it to make exactly what the horse needs. He then returned to his Southern roots, at first working with Show Horses. He soon focused his activities on Fairgrounds, where he is currently based. Broadus likes to listen carefully to the horse and let the horse tell him what he needs, which will be the focus of his presentation. Mr. Bob Langley was born in Louisville but grew up in Scott County where he attended high school. He was leaving for college on a football scholarship when the college discovered he had fragile ankles and the scholarship rapidly evaporated. Given the challenge of a career change, he signed on with Charlie Hodges in Central Kentucky where he learned the basics of the farrier business. When Hodges retired, Langley took over his business and soon discovered he had a lot more to learn about the farrier business, which he handled by working closely with Steve Norman and Bob Berger. Over the years he has worked with a number of outstanding farms and horses, including 40 plus years at Taylor Made, where he started with the legendary Joe Taylor. High profile horses Langley has worked on include Curlin, one of his all-time favorite horses, American Pharoah, California Chrome, Street Sense and, his favorite horse next to Curlin, the unusually named Stand Still.
6 Mr. Joey Carroll has been an American Farrier Association (AFA) Certified Professional Farrier for 45 years, during which period he has worked on all types of equine athletes, including work as a private farrier for the famed William Haughton Standardbred Stable. Other experience includes working as a farrier at Dr. Redden s International Equine Podiatry Center, presenting as a speaker at the Bluegrass Laminitis Symposium, speaking at the AFA National Convention, and numerous farrier organizations on various topics including club feet, balance, bar shoe applications, quarter cracks, and aluminum welding. Carroll has also contributed articles to many professional publications including the American Farrier Journal. Mr. Mark Dewey was born in Coral Gables, Florida and Florida has always been a significant part of his life. Dewey was initially focused on being a veterinarian, but along the way he found his niche as a farrier. Dewey started as a rural farrier in north Texas, but he had his heart set on the racetrack. With this in mind he carefully picked the time and place of his professional farrier exam which he passed with flying colors. As a Florida native, Dewey is careful to spend his winters in Florida, but he has spent 23 of his summers in Chicago, 10 at Churchill Downs, and 10 in New York. Dewey is now semi-retired, and he has a lively range of hobbies including, as a younger gentleman, base jumping and skydiving, and now his hobbies include shooting, hunting, and fishing. Mr. Steve Norman shoes wild and fast horses, and he claims he can always tell the difference. He was born in Nebraska, hailing from a family of jockeys and trainers. As a teenager Norman launched his career as a jockey, but he very soon outgrew that career and by age 17, he was shoeing his first horses. His first client was his dad, who was the leading Appaloosa trainer in 1969, in which year Norman was also the leading Appaloosa jockey. As a full-time farrier, he hooked up with D. Wayne Lucas and came to Kentucky with him in the mid-1980s. In Kentucky Norman extended his clientele to include Lee Eaton and Eaton Sales and Bill Casner, with whom he worked with on starting gates when they were both younger. More recently he has worked with Ashford Farm, whose ancestors reportedly invented the horse.
