2 ANNUAL REPORT 2011 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I need to start off by thanking my dedicated partners and Board members, Lisa Boyce and Robin Weinkam. With out them, their hard work and dedication, we would not succeed. I also would like to say a special thank you to Maria and Dorothy. Our two dedicated volunteers that help with our daily feedings. 2011, was a year of change for us. Including our name. We were looking to change our thinking and programs. First and foremost, we are here for the HORSE!! In the past we have never thought beyond that. However, in todays economy we have found that some horse owners have found themselves struggling to care for their horses and we are doing our best to help relieve that burden. The problem is we don t always have the space needed to care for all the horses. We are working to increase our ability to help serve the horse and the community. We have added a new program, Placement Assist, to help the struggling horse owner find a home for their horse. We have also added a lease program to help offset the cost of caring for our rescue horses. Here s to New Challenges and New Successes! Karen Speake

If you ignore their suffering, I will remind you of it. You may silence them but you will not silence me. ~ Unknown GOALS: To ensure that all horses are treating humanly To provide shelter, quality care, rehabilitation and adoption to abused, neglected or unwanted horses To heighten awareness to the abuse and neglect of horses To establish programs and volunteer opportunities that will help to develop compassion and responsibly for horses To continue to maintain ethical business practices and being good stewards of donated funds To purchase a larger facility to enable to rescue and adoption of more horses To continue our fund raising efforts to allow us to purchase the larger facility VISION: To help establish and nurture the bond between horses and caring human beings To educate individuals on the proper care and training for the horse

4 ANNUAL REPORT 2011 History Haley After Haley Before A Fresh Start For ALL Our Horses. of Delaware, Inc (CFERD) is a non-profit volunteer based equine welfare organization establish in 2005, whose mission is dedicated to improving the lives of the magnificent horses CFERD rescue, as well as the families who adopt them. The exhaustive labor of our small group and ever expanding circle of volunteers is well rewarded by the knowledge that these horses are safe. The year 2011, was a year of change of us. CFERD was formally know as Whimsical Equine Rescue, Inc. Here is our story Whimsical Equine Rescue, Inc. was founded in Originally, Karen Speake, the President of Whimsical Equine Rescue, Inc. (WER), was associated with Whimsical Animal Rescue. Ms. Speake was in charge of the Equine Division of Whimsical Animal Rescue (WAR). In 2005, WAR merged with Sussex County Animal Association (SCAA). SCAA decided it was not cost effective to include Equines in WAR.

5 ANNUAL REPORT 2011 History Cont d Ms. Speake seeing the need for an equine rescue, elected to start her own rescue dedicated to Equines only. Ms. Speake was rescuing equines on her own until she was able to find people with the same passion and dedication to the horses in need. Ms. Speake was joined by Lisa Boyce. Ms. Boyce is now Vice President of WER. Through hard work, dedication and a lot of their own money, Ms. Speake and Ms. Boyce were able to organize themselves into what is now WER. CFERD was originally located at the residence of Karen Speake. In 2009, Robin Weinkam started out as a weekly volunteer. In 2010, Mrs. Weinkam joined our Board of Directors. Mrs. Weinkam has been instrumental in our advertising and fund raising campaigns. Whimsical Equine Rescue is making changes. Some of our changes are obvious, like our new NAME. We have changed our name to of Delaware, Inc. CFERD have changed our logo. There are several reasons for the change. When Karen Speake first started rescuing horses, she was with Whimsical Animal Rescue (WAR). WAR decided they could no longer rescue horses because of the cost involved. Karen decided the need was still there and became Whimsical Equine Rescue, even though she was not connected with WAR. Over time it has become more and more difficult to separate ourselves from WAR. More and more people are calling us to take their dog or cat. While CFERD loves all the animals, that is not our focus. There are plenty of dog and cat rescues and resources. There are very few creditable Equine rescues. So, in order to better serve our equine community and hopefully eliminate confusion for individuals we are now of Delaware, Inc. CFERD has also found in order to keep up with the current demand for placement into our program and the current number of sanctuary horses in our program; CFERD needs to offer more solutions to the community.

6 ANNUAL REPORT 2011 Rescue and Rehabilitation Programs: This is what CFERD is all about. CFERD brings horses in from many different places. CFERD works closely with our local SPCA offices. CFERD brings in retired and/or slaughter bound Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. CFERD also has individuals in our community contact us when they cannot afford to care for their horse. CFERD encourage people to call us before the horse becomes neglected or starved. CFERD will also identify horses in trouble. If we see a neglected horse we will contact the owners ourselves to see if they are interested in turning the horse over to CFERD to be cared for and brought back to health and then adopted. The incoming horses, no matter where they are coming from, are evaluated for on their health, emergency veterinary care, hoofs, vaccines, special dietary needs and personality. On average, the starved and neglected horses will need 3-6 months specialized care before they are ready to be adopted. Adoption Program When someone is interested in meeting one of our horses, they will call and make an appointment. We always try to make ourselves available to show our horses anytime someone calls. They are required to sign a release of liability form before they meet the horse. We will offer to ride the horse first, before the interested party. We will then encourage them to come back out to ride again before they make their application. When they file the application, we charge $ We will then make a site visit to verify that their facilities meet our requirements to care for a horse. Once we approve their application, they are required to fill out an adoption contact. Once they take possession of the horse, we will keep in contact with the adopter and perform site checks to ensure that the horse is being cared for properly. They are not allowed to sell, trade or give away the horse. If they cannot continue to care for the horse or if we believe the horse is not being care for properly, we have the right to and we will take custody.

7 ANNUAL REPORT 2011 Rescue and Rehabilitation Programs: Virtual Fostering CFERD offers a Virtual Fostering Program. All of the residence, both sanctuary and adoptable, are eligible to participate in this program. This program offers different levels and benefits, based on the amount pledged monthly. Everyone that participates in the VF Program receives a Certificate and recognition on our web page that states they are the VF Parent. This program is designed for the animal lover that does not have the ability to care for a horse full time. This program entitles the participant the opportunity to be a part of the horses care all the while the horses remains at the rescue. Some of our permanent residences

12 Off Site Training-Education Day 2011 CFERD offered a basic education day free to our adopters. The information was provided by a local Farrier, Dentist, Vet and Natural Horesemanship Trainer

13 ANNAUL REPORT 2011 Karen Speake, President Karen Speake.was born in Anne Arundel County Maryland and that is where her love for horses began. She never gave up her plea for a horse of her very own. And in March of 1973 her parents realized that she would not give up on her dream of becoming a vibrant horseperson. At the age of 12, she found her very best equine friend Lady Nayia Flash. Karen and Lady became the ones to beat in both western pleasure classes as well as the speed racing events. After losing Lady at a ripe age of 33 years young, she was truly heart broken. She was horseless for 7 years. When she moved to Seaford, Delaware she could not deny herself the joy of owning a horse and soon purchased an Arabian mare and 2 Arabian geldings. While looking for these horses, she came across an opportunity to make a difference for 2 more horses thus adopting them to complete her equine family. In 2003, Karen saw the need was great for an equine rescue in Delaware and joined Whimsical Animal Rescue to start their Equine Division. Soon Whimsical Animal Rescue found that rescuing horses was very costly and they could no longer support the Equine Division. Karen, knowing the need was great, started Whimsical Equine Rescue, Inc. which in 2011 changed its name to of Delaware, Inc. Karen brings 38 years of experience and a deep passion for caring for horses. She ran several businesses and understands what it takes to be successful. Lisa Boyce, Treasurer Lisa Boyce grew up on a diversified livestock farm. From the beginning, she learned the meaning of hard work and how rewarding that was. At the age of five, her family bought their first horse, Star an older quarter horse mare. After that they purchased two more horses so Lisa and her two siblings could ride together. When she was seven, her family moved to a much larger farm which had been in her father s family for over a century. She took an active role in the day to day activities of the working farm which included poultry, hog and cattle production. The years past and Lisa left the farm to pursue a career outside farming but soon found her way back. She realized that farming and taking care of animals was something that she could not deny herself and getting a horse was first on her list. Just by chance, in 2005, she crossed paths with Karen Speake who was starting an equine rescue (Whimsical Equine Rescue, Inc.) where she adopted her first rescue horse. Since she had several acres of pasture, recently vacated by cattle, this seemed to be the perfect avenue to incorporate her background of farming and her desire to help. Lisa now divides her time between two horse boarding facilities which she partners with Karen in managing of Delaware, Inc. (formally Whimsical Equine Rescue, Inc.).

14 ANNUAL REPORT 2011 Robin Weinkam, Secretary Robin was born and raised in Anne Arundel County Maryland. She moved the Delaware in December 2006 and joined of DE, Inc. (Formally Whimsical Equine Rescue, Inc) in June She originally started volunteering in May Once she spent one afternoon at the rescue she was hooked. Although she had always dreamed of owning a horse, that dream did not come true until she met Haley at Changing Fates in Although she does not have the extensive horse knowledge as the other board members, she brings a love of the animal and a business mind that has helped Changing Fates grow. She is responsible for fund raising and preparing grant proposals. Robin has worked in every aspect of the mortgage industry. She now works for DNREC, State of Delaware and lives in Bridgeville, DE.
