1 October, 2014 Pasadena Horse and Pony Association Visit our website at The PHPA was founded by Phil and Alice Dibben in concert with local horse lovers in order to create and promote interest in horses, horsemanship and horseback riding as a recreational activity. Although it gets dark a little too quick, it is still my favorite time of year to ride. Thanks to those of you who attended last month s cookout. We had the pleasure of crowning Alice Dibben as an honorary member of the PHPA. As most of you know, Alice and her husband, Phil, co-founded the club nearly twenty years ago. Although she stays busy managing her own Sandhill Farm, Alice continues to support the club as our Membership Chair and in many other ways. Thanks Alice! This month several of us had the opportunity to attend a Liberty workshop with new member Lynn Punturiere at Mockingbird Hill Farm. Lynn explained several ground exercises that can help transform the relationship you have with your horse or horses. I, for one, am hopeful Lynn will continue to share her equine knowledge and holistic approach with the club.

2 CON T FROM PAGE 1 Also, welcome to several new club members from Mockingbird and a big thanks to Lisa Stephen for letting us use the lovely farm. As the year comes to end, we are looking for a few good men and women to support the PHPA as officers and members on the board of directors. If you have an interest, please contact any current member on the board. No experience required, just an enthusiasm for horses and helping the club to flourish. Happy trails and hope to see you at the Caring and Sharing Parade next month. 4 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Laquel Ling Hi, my name is Laquel Ling and I have been riding since choosing a week long summer riding camp when I was 8 years old. My first horse was a big blue roan quarter horse/mustang that we bought from one of my first trainers. Needless to say we stood out a little at the local hunter shows since she wasn t quite the classic hunter type horse, but we had fun. After Indy suffered a serious hock injury that would not heal, we had to find her a new home. For a while I was horseless, so I started riding horses that other people did not want to ride and paid for my lessons by doing work around the farm. The guy that owned the farm I was at had a bunch of thoroughbreds and Arabians that no one did anything with, so these became my projects. I also gained plenty of experience breaking young horses due to the fact that I was small and never said no to riding any horse. I always seemed to be the first one to get on any of the young horses that were just being started under saddle. Needless to say I have hit the ground more times than I can remember. During this time my parents decided it was time to get me a nice horse that could actually take me where I wanted to go, and the most cost effective way at that time was to breed. We leased my trainer s Polish Arabian mare and bred her with a local Hanoverian stallion, and that s how I ended up with my horse Duelly. I was in 8 th grade when he was born and remember missing school to sleep in the barn the night he was born. We have the whole event on tape. While Duelly was growing I continued to ride any horse that needed work, and also began teaching lessons to some of the beginner students at the barn. I really enjoyed teaching and training horses and loved to see my students kick butt at the local shows. I am proud to say that I did all of Duelly s training myself and he turned out to be an amazing horse. Duelly and I were a great team and always did well at the local hunter and dressage shows. When I went to college I found an amazing barn in Finksburg (Springbook Farm) were I could keep him. While attending Goucher College I joined the riding team there and also worked at the barn part time to pay for my board. I continued taking dressage lessons and riding in clinics. I was also getting fabulous hunt seat instruction at Goucher. After graduating college with a degree in art and secondary education I got a job as middle school art teacher here in Anne Arundel County. I have been teaching art for the past 10 years and love it. My husband is a Prince George s County police officer and I also have a 4 year old son. While I have boarded my horse at a few different places in the county, I was by far the happiest at Mockingbird Hill and I can t thank Lisa enough for allowing me to bring Duelly there. Unfortunately two years ago I came to the hard realization that I didn t have the time or money to keep Duelly and sold him to a wonderful lady who wanted to learn dressage. She takes amazing care of him (I think he lives better than I do) and I can visit him any time I want. Since selling my horse I have actually begun to teach riding lesson more in the area and have a great group of ladies at Mockingbird Hill who are doing terrific with their horses. I would love to begin teaching and training even more. I have done everything from breaking wild mustangs, to training off the track thoroughbreds and pacers, worked with trailering issues, have ridden up to 2 nd /3 rd level dressage, and have shown hunter and dressage most of my life. I have picked up my training techniques from a wide variety of trainers and clinicians and would love to share what I have learned with the members of the local community. Yes, that s me facilitating the Meet and Greet Clinic and Open Clinics at Mockingbird Hill Farm, as noted on the Events Page! I hope to see you there! 4

6 Healthy Horse Rain Rot Most of us have felt and seen these lumpy, scabby, unsightly lesions SOMEWHERE on our horse at one time or another. What, exactly, IS rain rot? A little research has produced the following answers and information: Rain rot or rain scald (also known as dermatophilosis) is caused by bacterial infection, and it often is mistaken for a fungal disease,.the bacteria live in the outer layer of skin and cause from pinpoint to large, crusty scabs. Dermatophilus congolensis, the bacterium found to cause this infection, lives in dormant within the skin until the skin is compromised in some way, which can happen when there's prolonged wetness, high humidity, high temperature, or attacks by biting insects, according to The Merck Veterinary Manual. Rain rot occurs when the infective zoospores reach a compromised skin site. These zoospores germinate and produce threadlike tentacles, which penetrate into the living epidermis and spread in all directions, resulting in an acute inflammatory skin condition. It's easy to diagnose rain rot, generally on visual confirmation of the skin lesions alone, but a more definite diagnosis can be made by having your veterinarian examine a skin scraping for Gram-positive bacteria under a microscope or by culturing the bacteria. Horses with long winter coats will develop paintbrush lesions (raised, matted tufts of hair) along their dorsal surfaces, which include the neck, withers, back, and croup, as well as on the lower limbs. Light-skinned areas are usually more severely affected. As the lesions get larger and join together, they will progress to a crust or scab formation that when removed will expose yellow-green pus between the necrotic (dead) and living skin layers. If rubbed, the 'bumps' might rub off in the form of scabs with a small, hairless spot of skin showing. Most acute cases of rain rot can heal on their own; however, treatment is recommended for even minor cases because the lesions can spread and worsen. The lesions also interfere with use (especially if they are located along the horse's back or withers) and they can be painful for the horse. In early or less severe cases, simply removing the scabs by bathing the horse with antimicrobial shampoos and currying will take care of the problem. However, more severe cases in which the infection has affected deeper skin layers might require your veterinarian to give antibiotic injections (such as procaine penicillin and streptomycin). Unlike most skin conditions, rain rot is not itchy, but it can be painful to the touch. Be cautious when bathing the area or removing the scabs! Not only do we not wish to cause excessive discomfort to our horses, we also don t want to get kicked, bitten, or stepped on as our horses react to our painfully picking at them! Practicing good hygiene, such as daily grooming with clean brushes, along with reducing environmental risk factors (constant wet and/or humid environments and biting insects), are the best ways to prevent your horse from getting rain rot. Because this infection can spread to other horses, it's important to isolate the infected horse to reduce the risk of spreading the infection to pasturemates. Also, be sure to use a separate set of grooming tools and tack (if the infection is light enough to continue working the horse without causing harm), and disinfect these items between each use. Now that chilly, rainy fall weather is upon us, I know that my horse will have her raincoat on! 6

7 1 2 Hit the Trails! Patapsco Valley State Park McKeldin Area The McKeldin area is in the most Northern part of Patapsco, along Marriottsville Road in Howard County. Providing plenty of parking for trailers and miles of well marked and maintained trails, McKeldin is a pleasure to ride in. There are water crossings, hills, and beautiful scenery. One can either choose to picnic at a likely spot along the trail, or relax and enjoy a leisurely lunch back at the trailers where a shaded picnic area is available. Although there are less challenging areas in which to ride at McKeldin, if choosing the uphill trails, barefoot riders beware of the quite rocky conditions. Hoof boots or shoes will ensure the comfort of your horse and avoid injuries due to hoof bruises, chips and cracks that can occur in rocky areas. Fall is coming to a close, with winter weather moving in. There is still time to get a ride or two in, even if you are not a real cold weather rider! Let s get out there! 8 Pasadena Horse and Pony Association Editor s Note: Horse History The Biblical War Horse Dear PHPA Members: We need help from all of you to seek out and secure PHPA members that would like to run for a position on the board. The current positions available are: -President -Vice President -Secretary -Co-Secretary -Co-Treasurer -3 to 4 board members -Co-Coordinator/Assistant for Membership -Co-Coordinator/Assistant for Newsletter We are seeking more than one person for Secretary and Treasurer and for the special projects of Newsletter and Membership to share with the workload. A ballot has been started, so once someone agrees to be nominated, let us know and they can be added to the ballot. Voting will occur during Holiday Party typically in the beginning of January. Thanks so much! Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with strength? Do you make him leap like the locust? His majestic snorting is terrible. He paws in the valley, and exults in his strength; he goes out to meet the weapons. He laughs at fear, and is not dismayed; he does not turn back from the sword. Upon him rattle the quiver, the flashing spear and the javelin. With fierceness and rage he swallows the ground; he cannot stand still at the sound of the trumpet. When the trumpet sounds, he says Aha! He smells the battle from afar, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting. From Job 39, Thank you for helping to keep PHPA an active, involved organization in the local horse community! Bobbie 8
